12 Crazy Amazing Facts About The Clitoris

June 15 2018

I was looking up details after reading some comments in the forum and had to share this great blog about that little understood part of the woman's body, the clitoris. I recently checked out an amazing art exhibition all about the clitoris, called “CLITERACY.” Now, the clitoris doesn’t usually get a lot of press. It’s usually upstaged by the vagina, which is usually left in the dust by the attention that the penis gets. So, to walk into an art exhibit all about the clitoris was pretty amazing even for a sex educator! The artist, Sophia Wallace, in her ongoing mixed media project, aims to: [expose] the irony of society’s obsession with and ignorance of female sexuality. CLITERACY, 100 Natural Laws (2012) includes a monumental wall of texts which challenge phallocentric biases in science, law, philosophy, politics and the art world. Wallace’s focus on the clitoris and female pleasure serves to question and counteract the history of misinformation regarding women’s bodies and the concomitant oppression therein. I was completely drawn in. I left with a lot of crazy amazing clitoral facts and then went off to do even more research! Brace yourself for some facts and thoughts about the clitoris. As artist Sophia Wallace states, “the clitoris is not a button, it’s an iceberg.” 1. If you want to address the clitoris, labia and vagina together, vulva is the all-encompassing term. 2. Fifty to 75 percent of women who have climaxes (orgasms) need to have their clitoris touched (clitoral stimulation). Most women are unable to have an orgasm through intercourse alone. 3. The clitoris is only partially visible to the naked eye. The clitoris is actually close to four inches in length (kinda like the average non-erect penis), but three-fourths of it is hidden from view within a female’s body. It’s buried treasure. Think of all that pleasure potential in the entire region. Have you explored it? 4. The clitoris grows throughout a woman’s life. After menopause, the clitoris can become 2.5 times larger than it was when the same woman was a teenager. I don’t think that there has been an actually study about clitoris size in relation to pleasure. And I don’t think that women have a size thing about their clitoris, the way men do around penis size. I have never ever met a woman who has measured her clitoris, but I have met men who have measured their penis. 5. The clitoris contains 8,000 deliciously sensitive nerve endings, double the nerve endings in the glans of a penis. Sorry, guys. 6. Most of us don’t know that all babies have the exact same genital tissue when they are conceived. At about 12 weeks, each baby’s genitalia begin to differentiate into a penis or labia. We are more alike than we are different. The clitoris and penis are the same materials assembled in a different way. The clitoris has glans, a foreskin (also known as the hood), erectile tissue and a very small shaft — all the parts that a penis has. It even swells when it’s aroused. 7. Back to being an “inny” and an “outy” — as I already stated, only one quarter of the clitoris is visible. The rest of it is inside the women’s body. Besides the clitoris being made up the clitoral head, the hood and the clitoral shaft, it is also composed of the urethral sponge, erectile tissue, glands, vestibular bulbs and the clitoral legs. Only the clitoral head and the hood are located outside the body. Some sex experts believe that the G Spot is actually a part of the clitoris. 8. The clitoris is designed to bring a woman pleasure. That is its sole purpose. Not reproduction. 9. Yes, there are all kinds of orgasms. Vaginal, Cervical and G Spot Orgasms do exist, but they are much harder for most women to achieve than a clitoral orgasm. Very few women are able to achieve an orgasm without any kind of clitoral involvement. There is nothing immature about women having orgasms through their clitoris. Sorry, Dr. Sigmund Freud. 10. The clitoris varies in size and shape on different women. Some are hidden under the hood, and some stick out. Some like to be touched softly and others like a lot of pressure. It takes time to get to know a woman’s clitoris. Don’t assume that you know what it likes. Take your time and get to know each unique clitoris, just like you would take the time to get to know the woman it is attached to. 11. People have all kinds of nicknames for the clitoris. You may have heard “man in canoe,” “rosebud,” “joy buzzzer,” “cherry pit,” “love button,” or “bald man in a boat,” just to name a few. I have also heard chick pea and lentils. Anyone have a chip? 12. A clitoral orgasm can bring about anywhere between three and 16 contractions and can last from 10 to 30 seconds. But that doesn’t exclude the fact that many women have multiple orgasms that can include pelvic contractions. Some sex educators have compared and contrasted male and female orgasm and have concluded that even the most average clitoral orgasm lasts longer than even the best ever most fantastic male orgasm. Once again, kinda bad news for the men. Woman have more nerve endings in our clitoris. Did you know that the word “Clitoris” is from the Greek work for “key”? Understanding and getting to know the clitoris may unlock your sex life forever. I invite you not to dismiss the clitoris and realize how deeply wired this gland is into the female body. Why wouldn’t we take a clue from the ancient Greeks, and recognize fully that this amazing female pleasure source is indeed a key to unlocking a female’s pleasure possibilities and perhaps so much more. When we turn a key, doors open. For the TLDR who can be bothered googling, there are pictures online, lol... Peachy, sorry guys women are obviously the superior sex, a woman's clit' keeps growing throughout her lifetime...

Was surprised to read the other day that the clitoris was regularly ommitted from anatomical textbooks from the mid 19th to 20th century. And a curious observation as I typed this, my phone kept auto correcting to another word, I had to spell "clitoris" out as a 'new word'. - Posted from rhpmobile

The G spot, or G area as more accurate, is simply the area below the "legs", roots or base of the clitoris, where it spreads out somewhat with a type of support structure. So, essentially, the G spot is simply stimulation of the same clitoral organ, but in a way that produces more stimulation to the whole organ than just on the external part. There is a procedure some woman have of collagen implants into the vaginal wall at the area of the G spot, which thickens the wall or raises the surface, making it easier to put pressure or stimulation on this area through various means. - Posted from rhpmobile

Is not hard to find and can be pleased in so many ways, so I’m baffled why so many get it wrong when it comes to pleasing a woman ( this wasn’t an invitation for the smart arses here to make some sort of snide remark about a woman never being pleased lol). I did have to refocus my orgasms after my hysterectomy. I used to have sensational cervical orgasms which would be followed with a clitoral orgasm, it was brilliant! I do miss the intensity of those orgasms ... Ty Peachy xx

I believe the clitoris has been misrepresented, pleasure and sex a minor function in it's major function as with reproduction, if science claims 8 is fact, then mother nature has been patient and her dolphins are the most intelligent of the species. I asked mother nature and you can, mother nature will answer. fact The clitoris is the most misunderstood organ fact, but there is no magic in science, yet can not produce a living single blade of grass in it's lab. :)~~ Mado Mado Tara xx

By the comments she added to each fact and with little to no understanding herself, as a man I read a woman taking the piss out of me, putting herself above in respects rather than equality, perhaps amusing to some scorned, hardly is it doing any good for helping men who wish to enjoy understanding and learning how to enjoy women that are attached to their clitoris. I feel this and I don't know where the greatness is in the womans blog, pseudo feminism is what has been blogged if it is an honest feedback you prefer Peachy. Better understanding is to embrace the want for need, seek the truth and not judge those who have nothing to do with personal agenda, nor gender. This woman knows less about her clitoris than I do and she is wrong by listing fact when she herself can not have the understanding herself to dismiss the idea, so intensions are clear, just not doing women any favours in the best interests served. IMHO

You funny so n so. If there's going to be anyone with an objection, it had to be you. But I agree, I did question number 8 myself, I think there's a lot more necessary *cough* study to be done into that. My simple thoughts based on the fact we all started with female sex organs in the womb... Is that the clit is comparative to the penis when comparing male and female anatomy. I just read your follow up comment, I forgot to credit the author (Pamela Madsen) who is commenting after attending CLITERACY: 100 Natural Laws (2012) by Sophie Wallace, using info from there and other study she says she did afterwards. I would say that is where your reading is coming from. It did start with 14 facts considering other headings to the same blog out there. But it seems to be the most informative on the subject from what I saw with a quick search, I learned a lot I didn't know before too that made me feel good to know about myself. Peachy, brb...

The modern theory is that all embryos develop first on their female chromosomes, and those with male chromosome types only start to develop those traits after several weeks, the same for many mammals, and this not only explains the penis and clitoris developing from the same stem cells, but also other similarities such as males having nipples etc. - Posted from rhpmobile

Thanks for the thanks all of ya, this had to be one of the best writings on female sex organs I've ever come across and I had to share it. Phallocentric biases Free_Spirit, Bonefide! What wouldn't I give to be there for that in depth discussion. Quoting 'nightingale8' Was surprised to read the other day that the clitoris was regularly ommitted from anatomical textbooks from the mid 19th to 20th century. And a curious observation as I typed this, my phone kept auto correcting to another word, I had to spell "clitoris" out as a 'new word'. Ooohhh, thanks for that Nightingale, like that part of us doesn't matter. You must have a look and see if you can type in penis on your phone, we're going to give the poor thing a conniption if you give me half a chance, lol! Your mention sent me off to have a look at the history of the words clitoris and penis. On the site I looked at, there was one entry for clitoris vs 66 for penis! 5 for vagina. clitoris (n.)"erectile organ of female mammals," 1610s, coined in Modern Latin from Late Greek kleitoris, a diminutive, but the exact sense intended by the coiners is uncertain. Perhaps from Greek kleiein "to sheathe," also "to shut," in reference to its being covered by the labia minora. The related Greek noun kleis has a secondary meaning "a key, a latch or hook (to close a door);" see close (v.), and compare slot (n.2). Alternatively [Watkins], from Greek kleitys, a variant of klitys "side of a hill," from PIE *kleitor-, suffixed form of root *klei- "to lean," via with a sense of "little hill." Some ancient medical sources give a supposed Greek verb kleitoriazein "to touch or titillate lasciviously, to tickle" (compare German slang der Kitzler "clitoris," literally "the tickler"), but in this case the verb is likely from the anatomy. As for the Greeks themselves, they seem to have called the thing nymphe, a figurative use, literally "bride, lovely young woman;" Beekes also has kystho-korone "clitoris," literally "crown of the vagina." The anatomist Mateo Renaldo Colombo (1516-1559), professor at Padua, claimed to have discovered it ("De re anatomica," 1559, p. 243). He called it amor Veneris, vel dulcedo "the love or sweetness of Venus." It had been known earlier to women.

Maybe the "man in canoe,” “rosebud,” “joy buzzzer,” “cherry pit,” “love button,” or “bald man in a boat,” is the mystery that alouds most men, until they learn and listen to thier female partner. We all never stop learning, and with that shouldn't  just focus on one point, but except the whole package, mind, body and soul so to speak. Very enlightening topic.

A child in the womb at the term of pregnancy, the reproductive system grows into a thing to have birth, silly yeah, the child has been in the womb surrounded by a cushion of fluid protecting from harm, the clitoris has clusters of nerve endings where it is attached to the walls of the vagina, the G spot, A spot a little further deeper and high on the vagina wall, the deep spot by the cervix and something happens that may just tie all the questions seem based on sexual pleasure and orgasms with connections and friendly, the child breaches and head first lands in the vagina, shoulders to wide for the cervix to let go so quickly so the baby in waiting head hits smack bang on the cluster of nerves, g spot the cluster up high on the vagina walls A spot also is being stimulated by the circumference at it's widest part of the head and all things moving about, hips and stuff with the movements of mum, pleasure is one thing, pain is another, so there is the chemicals that bring pleasure being released into the system to combat the pain associated on this occasion, toss the buttons of orgasm and clit sexual pleasure only, the clusters of nerves are giving the clitoris the signals that it is time to play it's part as the conductor orchestrating the sequence of actions 8000 nerve endings are about to go top and tell the brain, together the two organs become a precession team and this is the magic of all in question. The antiseptic cool fluid, regulated by in part the scenes gland also being stimulated and swelling with blood, why ? well mum won't piss urine on her baby, try tell her and see how things look with love, no the baby begins to have flushes of ambient antiseptic fluid to the eyes and ears and mouth and nose, there are nasty germs just outside and the pc muscle is working to best it can as well lets not forget, generally the woman is more when squirt fingered and thrashed about by attempts internally unless pushes or pushed * The clitoris has been busy sending packets of energy throughout the nervous system to all reaches of the body, back and forth, instructions and sequencing, configuring with the brain of self and also the baby is on close watch too. The reactions of birth, cervix relaxing, the baby flushed with fluid cool and antiseptic, there may just be another place other than the bladder capable of holding such fluid argued over in squirt theory, pleasure is being released continuously as time goes by, the reactions that bring on contractions that bring on orgasms does not seem appropriate nor sensible ATM ask mum and right in the shit again, dare not be a squirt master now. the contractions from the reactions from the clitoris are beginning to close together and comes a time where mum is so very right and ready and doing what she must, however the pain is still being helped and the cervix is still holding the shoulders, push is something but with some help the clitoris takes the matter in hand and 8000 nerve endings send out sparks to the whole body in chaos or sequence nor the matter, *an uncontrollable sequence of muscles contracting all at once and the baby is born. Sole purpose pleasure only, not reproduction. During all the functions the reproductive system is doing ATM, something most wonderful we are privileged to be a part as all, while the birth is near the clitoris and the brain together in precision and make it all look so easy, the mind of the mother begins having some of her bodily functions shut down, emotions and motor skills, she needs to harness the energy needed to connect with thew mind of her child and comfort through the trauma of the moment, maybe a blink for us in time, or at least the time as the full bodied contraction takes to the baby delivered, and try tell mum her child can suffer on its own for a while during trauma, not pressing her buttons now either And so I submit to the clitoris and while mum is in altered state with her baby, none of any of us exist for matter and the clitoris must keep the works in progress while in the absence, just a momentary lapse in time, but still magic in the making. This is not ignorance by a man thinking he knows women better than they do, this is what mother nature herself showed me in dreamtime when I asked her. Why we don't ask her more often is a wonder worth mention. Facts ? Meanings, what if the squirt thing is more reactions by stimulation with a reproduction system maintained and actively not so much on all our minds over the 50 or so years. Love can be deep too. caretaker with mother nature

Great work with that timing for your second post as I got to replying to you. And enlightening for the picture I'm developing. It would follow that the reproductive systems of men and women are very similar all the way through then wouldn't it. That's a large part of what fascinates me about men, women, etc and something we don't look at a lot, our similarities. I think I've heard of that procedure for the g-spot you mentioned too, it sounds like the bomb. I talk to my partner lately Bonefide, and yes, yes, yes that is the way... Me and he are fortunate to have the benefit of having all our parts working well together and it gets better all the time so to speak. So Yes, as you say this is only a small part of our whole, certainly for me I am interested in all our parts as I'd like to think my threads over time reflect. Having all the parts working together has to be the best way, and that pleasure button is an important one that is little understood or cared about one that could do with a bit of time in the sun.

Still listen and learn from people, as I grow wiser and better looking like a good wine with age. Well maybe a old cheap wine, past it's used by date. Haha. Have to change my use by date I'm thinking. Talk, chatting and laughing both inside and outside the bedroom, can be enlightening. However nothing beats having a great naked cardio workout where u and her enjoy all the giving and taking of each other. We always attempt to give our partners better than they are giving us, like a race to be first, but always allowing the other to win also in a sense. Then their is the challenge to step up to the plate, and work outside the happy/cheeky zone as requested and or talked about, imagined or just won't to give it a go. The clitoris is a magical point on the female form, but it's not the end state, no should it be your mission statement. "Get to clitoris and your home free" WRONG. Look learn listen, as the bodies of many women and men react differently to touch and being touched in different ways. Slow, fast, indoors, outside, and first up in the morning, many methods. So look outside the box so to speak. 😎👍

Quoting 'Hottie1'That little morsel that is the clitoris ...I did have to refocus my orgasms after my hysterectomy. I used to have sensational cervical orgasms which would be followed with a clitoral orgasm, it was brilliant! I do miss the intensity of those orgasms ... Well, sorry I missed this before Hottie, I'm no expert on orgasms and that is news to me. But now that you mention it, I know mine were very different when I had the *mirena* in for a few years, so intense. Bugger hey. Mado, what have I to argue is that our bodies have so much to them that we don't understand. I am but a laywoman, a cheeky one who can have a base understanding and not suppose she knows it all. I could support the possibility of energies outside our current understanding but it would be supposition for me. Seriously, I need to pee and I feel like the bladder does tie in because I know orgasms are way more intense when I have a fuller bladder. Did you know there is apparently a hormone that can turn down our need to pee in our sleep which I can suppose supports some of your theory? I posted a snatch below. Totally in the area of the topic. Ah yes, some of the specifics of your post, we don't need to talk about some of the nitty gritty details a woman will sink to in her efforts to exorcise the demon from her body! Your brain/body prevent you from urinating during sleep? Uh oh... Just kidding, of course :P. This is actually an interesting question. First and foremost however, it can easily be argued that it doesn't. If you drink too many fluids before bed, have a tiny bladder, or have certain diseases which disrupt control of urine production, your brain will generally wake you, and you get up to go to the bathroom. At other times, the brain signalling your uncomfortably full bladder, may become incorporated into your dreams! That said, there are still mechanisms that have evolved to help sleep continue uninterrupted as possible. The primary way this is done is through a chemical called antidiuretic hormone (ADH). This rather useful hormone is not only active during sleep, but is involved in regulating urine production during waking hours as well. Don't think of it as some handy but ultimately useless little hormone, either - it's critical in regulating hydration and overall water content of your body, as well as blood-pressure. Essentially, it works by making certain functional units of the kidney more (or less) permeable to water, helping to control the volume of urine produced. There are other accessory hormones and signalling mechanisms that work together with ADH to control urine output, however it is the primary and most effective regulator of urine while asleep. There are physical mechanisms preventing you from peeing in bed as well. Most sleeping adolescents and adults have increased tone of certain sphincters and accessory muscles found throughout the urinary system. This helps keep urine where it belongs, even if your bladder is becoming full enough to require a good old-fashioned nocturnal emptying :P

Yes, maybe I should have left the magic bit out, explain feelings of love can be difficult at best, that's about me and guess a bit selfish, if you had said the topic was for women to feel better about themselves and the facts were more so to dazzle then I probably would have stayed out and left you all to lift the spirits. Luv ya Peachy, you are one of a kind. oh yeah, do you know how difficult it is to take a pee, with an erection ? now that is an awkward position, easier just to run out the back yard and just let go, close the eyes and think ..ahhh man this feels gooood.

I invite your thoughts, you too are one of a kind and have a mind that has often given me pause to think. You gave me a beautiful sense of where you were coming form and I have no intention to besmirch that in any way. It's just, I've been through the birth process and there was no holding back of various bodily fluids, trust me. but I can't remember if I ended up including the part in my post yesterday where I considered energy as part of a woman's g-spots function, I don't see why not, that energy being love then, but then I would have to wonder where the man's matching part is then? I'll leave that one to you my friend. I had a quick look at my last post and can see I also didn't include the mention about the FORE SKIN thread I posted in the past. I do know men can't pee with an erection, lol, I love to tease hubby sometimes and for some reason he never gets the urge to rush out and let off an easy one. Anyway, the reason I believe potentially has to do with not mixing semen and pee together? A similar point you were making to me. :-) I haven't finished looking into what you've said yet either, it got late yesterday but I still have windows open to go back to. I've enjoyed what I've learned here and in my wandering so far, thanks to you Mado, and all you posters who have educated me too. Love it, Peachy PS: funny 👽, that's the symbol my sister uses for me, lolol

I think of energy as being the life force throughout our central nervous system, messages from our mind to all we are made up from, electricity in packets of information sent and received by the brain and translated to the mind, we have thought, sight, hearing, touch, taste and feel, we move by the energy, think by the energy, live and love, instincts of fight and flight, instincts of reproduction. 8000 nerve endings from the clitoris are spread over a larger area, places in the vagina, the outer clit head (under the hood tip that is so very sensitive) and the penis has all the nerve endings in a more concentrated area at the perennial (base of the head of the penis) meaning the clitoris has more types of feelings (the messages from nerve endings, nice, hot, ouch, feel ) and then there is the reproductive system, wired by instinct to reproduce and cycles by default, with a supply of eggs about 50 years at one a month yeah. But falling pregnant may happen, maybe several times, maybe never, thing is the woman's body is maintained completely and ready able any time. my point is that not only for sexual pleasure, also as, or if not more important (instinctual) the result and what happens when the reproductive system is impregnated through to term. Conclusion, once the baby breached and the head falls into the vagina, the clitoris is the central nervous system's coordinator with the body and mind and all with the care of a mothers child through the birth canal, (what I believe as magic, is in place of ineffable)(I found the science) sorry don't remember where google took me, labyrinth :)) Brain Drs anyhow and discovery of the activity monitoring the energy in a machine of a woman during birth, the results were referred to as 'Altered State of Mind' Fact or theory (experts in the field) I will say believed, the mother's mind connected to the child's mind during the trauma at the final stage of birth. Dream come true, perhaps, further more a woman, sorry.. she has bought the clitoris from the ages to recent as ' listed in the reference books, to a 3D model printed of the actual clitoris, And it does not look like an ice burg The love comes from over 25 years, 3 children and in all, the expressions Tara shares when her clitoris is being stimulated and she tells 'sex has never been the same, it's always different' including her orgasms", and I get the whole package thing with pressing all the right buttons, as to not pressing them much at all, a cup of tea and toast in the mornings and dishes of an evening has been possibly the most reliable buttons our sex life has had. Yeah Peachy I reckon most women think with their clitoris :p~~

I had a perfectly good post well on the way yesterday before I accidentally closed the window. :-( Then I gave up on this thread for the day. Okay, new day, new approach, still primarily scientific I think? I think a lot but it isn't always so easy to put into words, gotta thank a few posters for encouraging an imperfect being Energy, to start with we are made up of atoms. Everything is made up of atoms. Atoms are made of energy that vibrates on different levels. That makes a whole pile of stuff believable outside everyday thinking. No, it does not look like an iceberg but like an iceberg the greatest majority of the clitoris is below the surface. I did see a picture of a 3D representation in my wanders though they say it is not entirely representative yet. Unless it's a different one I saw. But damned if it doesn't look a lil bit like a dick and balls and a bit extra. I went for a simple feel around to get the idea that the clitoris ain't no pea, lol. I do laugh that I have Pea in my profile name twice, and have a giggle about the sensitivity of the Princess and the Pea fairy tale. Something I did read about the history of female orgasm and the placement of the clitoris supports what you're saying about the potential role to some degree. Peachy In earlier mammals, the clitoris, which is so often key to a woman’s orgasm, tends to be part of the vagina—guaranteeing that intercourse stimulated this organ and kick-started ovulation. But in later arising species, particularly primates, the clitoris has moved ever farther away from the vagina, even out of reach of an inserted penis. “A shift in the position of the clitoris is correlated with the loss of intercourse-induced ovulation,” says Martin Cohn, an evolutionary developmental biologist at the University of Florida in Gainesville. “Their hypothesis shifts the focus of the research question from the evolutionary origin of orgasm as an evolutionary novelty, which has long been presumed but not demonstrated, to the evolutionary modification of an ancestral character.”
