50 shades Trilogy

July 11 2012

Ok so i am mid way through the second book of the 50 shades of grey "phenomenon" and so far i am a bit meh what is all the fuss about??For those who have been living under a rock and dont know about this author and the series it is THE book everyone is calling porn for housewives, for me it is a bit mills & boon and the sex stuff is a little repetitive, while it appears to be well researched and written it is of a fantasy nature and does not really ring true to me (and from speaking to others it doesn't ring true to anyone who is in the BDSM lifestyle). It has it's good points in that it makes talking about non vanilla sex more 'everyday' it is astounding the number of people who are talking about this book, and how freely they admit to the affect it has on them it gives me hope that perhaps people are not as closed minded as i previously thought. Having read quite a bit of erotica lately (i have a friend who writes some fantastic stuff and has a blog) I really cant put this in the same category but i am glad that it is giving exposure to other writers of erotica. So, question time.................... who else here has read it? and what are your thoughts on it?

Finished all 3 books about 6 weeks ago... Thought the writing (outside of the copious amount of sex scenes - back to that later) was on par with that of a twelve year old girl, very cliched and so bloody predictable. I got stuck midway through the 2nd book and couldn't pick it up for about two weeks.   For some weird reason I was absolutely over the sex scenes by the second book also. They weren't that racy, and found them to be very predictable. I am giving the books away, I have a bookcase full of books and boxes under my bed also full of books... but these three... nope wasn't impressed at all. Just HATED it by the third book. Kicked myself for having bought them all.

I have read books 1 and 2 (was hoping it would get better) and you described it perfectly - a bit Mills and Boon for me too.   Still deciding if I will waste my time with Book 3 (oh wait some people know me too well - of course I will I can not have an incomplete set of books - unless the sweries is still being written).   My personal opinion is - if you really want to read them find someone who already owns them and borrow the books. Dont waste your money.   Kisses Focus

I'm only half way through book 1. It's okay so far. Nothing outstanding, but not as bad as so many are saying. I have read countless bad reviews of this book, yet barely any good ones, so wasn't expecting too much. At least I won't be disappointed!I will be very interested to see who they cast as Christian Grey in the movie though!Leah

A crap book, and I just could not finish the first one as I thought give me back my 9 bucks Anne Rice writes a much better book with her erotic tales. this is like the rest of the lame books as in Twilight, its just Twilight was written by a Mormon, this is the same thing but with cock and tits and tigers and lions ohhh my thats it! I am writing a book, with some meat in it!

I think the first book is an absolute scream..! The repetitiveness of the sex scenes are monotonous, and the way it's written, I mean 'Christian Grey-flavoured Popsicle'... Really?! Every time I read 'rolled my eyes', I felt like throwing the book across the room. I've given the book to a girlfriend of mine who is also an erotica fan (although more paranormal) for a good laugh as well. The sex scenes are fairly unrealistic, especially that she managed to orgasm multiple times in their first encounter, and they seem to be over so quickly! BUT I have to say, I'm pleased at the reaction its had in the media. Not so much the stupid theoretical arguments being brought up about feminism and female sexual liberation (it's a bloody fan fiction for God's sake!), but in that it's bringing greater awareness of erotic fiction as merely another form of 'normal everyday reading'. Hopefully people will be made to feel less like perverts when they skulk around 'adult fiction' section in the library (yours truly five years ago)...

Yes it was predictable and no it's not hard core at all but I'll be brave and admit that I enjoyed it. I read very few books as very few appeal unless they contain 'Mummy Porn' of some description. As a self confessed yummy mummy sex kitten - I'm a big fan of Mr Christian Grey's. Anyone know where I can find him? LOL!!!

Can anybody please tell me what exactly the plot, the story is in Fifty Shades of Grey and its sequels? Yes, I've seen them on bookshelves and yes, I'm well aware of the buzz, but I just want to know what all the fuss is about without having to read them. It seems that every few years there's a new novelistic craze that sweeps everybody everywhere, whether it be Harry Potter, Twilight, The Hunger Games... and now this; novel porn! It's only a matter of time before they turn this into a film too! So what's the story, particularly the first novel?

Anyone know where I can find him? LOL!!! I'm with you Savvy Girl... having not a lot of time to read in the past, and being a busy mum, I really wanted to see what the fuss has been about. Truth be told, I have actually enjoyed them too (am almost finished the second book). No it's not as realistic as some other erotic fiction I have read, however it's not bad reading, easy to read, and pick up where you left off without having to think too much.I too am looking forward to the movie...biting my bottom lip in anticipation lol

I hated these books...and for the life of me cannot see what all the fuss is about...gagging when I saw a current affair show tonite promoting a piece on the show that this book was helping save marriages...trust me you dont want it to be saved if your resorting to this !!!   I read the 1st book out of curiosity, and was bored senseless simply as Pusscat said it was repetiive and badly written.....the biting of the top lip and the rolling of the eyes.... did my head in   The second was far fetched and the third...seriously ???   If you feel really feel the need to read, wait till you can pick up a second hand copy at a garage sale....   And Tehcnoman...plot is simple..girl from wrong side of tracks meets handsome debonoir billionaire (was he gonna be anything else ?) who dabbles in bdsm and subsequenlty introduces it to her....and his idea of bdsm ?? mmmm where did the author do her research ???................and theres all these subplots woven in among the trilogy of kidnapping and stalking etc etc......its just waaaaaay over the top and borders on plain ridiculous....and really would any women really let a guy treat her like that....actually I found Christian apart from wildly immature, narcissitc, hedonistic. etc etc etc...quite creepy...   And for those seeking further mildly amusing reading, yes there is a profile on here with that name !!!...

Doms often have more than one sub... Not indicated in the book.. And where's the femme dommes in it... I guess they had to simplify it for wide audence appeal and not challenge too many conventions hey. Most of my bdsm friends are pretty dismissive of it, except for the common thread of "oh well at least my friends are now talking about something I've been doing for xyz years.without them ever knowing"... I am finding the same myself amongst my "normal" (?) Friends too. I agree with the Mills and Boon analogy. Haven't wasted my money, had borrowed and read 1 couldn't stand it, stopped reading right about there. How about they cast Julian Assange as Christian Grey...could be interesting

Vaginas described as "down there" pass me some lithium and some scrap booking tools... Yowzah.. now I am havjng fun.. my crocheting skills abd macrame skills are fling through the roof...

My girlfriend reckons that the majority of femme readers who find these books "exciting" have probably just never been fucked properly... Looks like a lot of guys out there in vanilla land mifht habe to lift their game, or conversely might be relieved that their women are interested in sex again...

My vanilla friend told me I would like it, think she was a little shocked by it. If only she knew some of the erotica I read!! However I did read the first one, the second one I am bored by about page 30. Agree with all the comments above. Interesting though how BDSM is something he is into because he is damaged goods! And now she is curing him. I am sure she will have turned Mr Grey completely vanilla by the third book. *roll my eyes as I bite my lip while my inner goodness plays with her clit"

Half way through the second book and have been stuck there for a couple of weeks also. It's too repetitive and Ana is giving me the shits to be honest. Hell *I* want to tie her up and slap her! sheeshI think though, the opinions on this forum/RHP are going to be (tongue in cheek) ever so slightly skewed compare to *main stream* readers of the book. It is complete fantasy to most of the general mainstream. Just like Twilight - it's about a romance - the setting is just different. If it adds a bit of sizzle to someone's relationship, kudos to them! Hell of a lot cheaper than couples counselling.

just to clarify, i do NOT think it's funny that she got an eye full of hot sauce.. HP sauce!I just cant get my head around someone that armed himself with a bottle of sauce as their choice of *weapon* because their gf wouldn't stop reading a book! *sigh*I guess the equivalent would be taking to a guy with a cat o' nine tails because he wouldn't put Penthouse down... although am sure on this occasion the intended (or desired) outcome would be far different from the sauce bottle...

The opinions of this demographic are always going to be bit different from mainstream. I have tried to get through the first book - nearly there, and yes, very disappointed... even on wordpress blogs you find better phantasie erotica ! However, a "hit" bestseller is good for educating the mainstream public and showing them that there is more to sex than a 5-min horizontal jog...!

#Ana likes tea. English Breakfast Twinings to be exact. #Christian Gray has gray eyes #Ana rolls her eyes a lot. And bites her lip. #Condoms come in foil packets. #Apparently ones subconscious is actually quite conscious, despite popular belief to the contrary. #Ana has an Inner Goddess If you found any of that to be a turn on, you will love it.

someone said something about being written for a 12 year old.I suspect, like TV and our local news print in WA, if you don't write down to that level you don't get the hordes of average to part with their coin.my mother raves about Ken Follet. so last year i read pillars of the earth. a supper story but written down to the level of idiot. great stories in beige are just frustrating. though the board game is very good LOL..but as a reader i want to discover, not be told. dear authors, please give me, in fact all readers, credit for having a modicum of intelligence..

glad to see that i am not alone in my views here, I am getting a little stuck with the second one just purely becuase of the repition of it all, the sex is some what dull, and completly unrealistic, the eye rolling and lip biting is is driving me NUTS!!!I agree that it is good in the sense that it is getting people in 'the mainstream' to talk about sex in a different way however i am not thrilled with the way the BDSM side of things is portrayed as 'dark' and 'damaged'and that she is 'fixing' him this will ultimately do nothing to truely open people's minds and while it is not really my cup of tea i have spent time talking to people who ARE into it and from what they say it seems that this is really the dumbed down vanilla version of BDSM lolIt seems that these books are popular as a result of clever marketing rather than actual talent and will continie to entertain bored soccer mums the world over, i wll stick with it and finnish the series (becuase i refuse to be beaten!!) and while i dont mind the plot so much i am not going to be relying on it to get my rocks off anytime soon, think i will stick to the real erotica for that

I’ve read all three books. I loved the first book except for once major detail. Why is it that author is trying to make out BDSM out as a bad thing? I mean she is basically saying Christian Grey is unstable and has issues and only does BDSM with women because he likes to hurt women who look like his mother. I mean seriously! It gives all those are actually into BDSM a bad name. And it really gets my nerve up! I found book two & three to be lacking after the first book and basically the kinky factor dies as Christian becomes “vanilla” god forbid! This series had potential but seriously bottomed out after the first book.

From what i've read so far about the books (reviews, talking to others, this forum thread) and the Amazon preview, it doesn't sound very interesting. I already have a problem with the message in the series: BDSM is not about being damaged goods, it's not about punishing your mother, gods! Just on that principle alone I won't be reading it. Apart from that, I hear the title is basically describing the writing style.

Even though he only had one tattoo I yearned for him to fill the lonely hours between Jerry Springer and Days of our Lives. As he approached me with his pasty white arms hanging out of his Nike vest, his smile told me that it was dole day and I knew that my velour track suit would be hanging off the lampshade tonight. As I stood in line at the job centre,... thinking of reasons why I couldn't work, a sweet smell drifted past my pig like nostrils. It was a mixture of weed sweat and Lynx Africa! I turned and there he was, DWAYNE, with his pants half way down his arse, our eyes met and he was soon lifting me onto the wheelie bins behind Woolies. He had already tied his Staffy to a post in the alley way so we would not be disturbed, there was a tramp watching but it did not bother us, just added to the mystery. I knew then that this was love and my life would never be the same again. I made a promise to him there and then that I would buy him a plasma with the baby bonus.   Irony is it was so close to this one so will have to do a re write so each of you guys do a short version of this with your own twist to it

I had a workmate bring this in to work and she said to me I would n't be able to keep my hands off myself reading it! I think she is seriously vanilla so I didnt tell her I had been to a BDSM party with a FWB who was into this sort of thing. I don't find the SM part all that much fun but am into the BD part as I find the delay in gratification to be extremely sexy and the control aspect erotic. Now I have seen other people's views I am not really inclined to buy into this "phenomenom" Mike

Reading the reviews here and from the original post it seems pretty much as i thought...a bit light. But to me, if its teasing and pleasing the masses AND it's picked up the mommy porn tag; as lame as it sounds in oh, so many ways, I'm a big fan. Ergo - mummies are reading 'porn', thinking its a bit risqué/erotica, talking about it - and i reckon a good portion are having some hotter sex - either alone or otherwise - as a result of it, even if just their fantasies. Sounds pretty hot to me...I still don't want to read the Grey Trilogy (or any part of it) - but it has prompted a re-read of O. Thanks for the useful and entertaining reviews - loved all the funny-scathing stuff.2B :)more O than Gray

I read the first book but only got part way through the second because Christian got all needy and sooky. It got repetitive and boring.
