AFL scandals and double standards

February 16 2016

Yep splashed all over the media about Garry Lyon with opinions ranging all the way to him being the scum of the earth. There hasn't been too much written about the wife who unless a gun was held to her head was also a willing participant in all of this. For me at least it is pretty big double standards in the reporting of this and in particular the blame associated with Garry even taking into account Garry being a celeb and the wife not so. Would this be same if the genders were reversed do you think ?? Over to the peeps for their thoughts ...... Cheers, W

After the grubby attempt to take advantage of Dustin Martin and ruin his career for a story I have little faith in the media and particularly Chanel 7 for anything remotely resembling a truth. As far as I'm concerned it's Gary and who evers business and that's that. I dislike the whole celebrity microscope thing intensely and I won't be part of it. Look at what happened to the rugby guys as soon as they go outside some prick with a camera is waiting to cash in. Yeah boys can be disgusting so whats new ? The $10,000 dobbers bonus thats what.

I say it would be worse if roles were reversed. She's a nameless arm holder, the media isn't interested in her. He's a major media personality, the media is interested in him. He chose that, he fostered that to advance his career. He wanted everyone to look at him so that he could bring in the big bucks. Now he has to wear the other side of that fame - the scrutiny when he shags his best mates wife for 4 years. Is she blameless? Narp, but she didn't dance with the media devil. Now, if it had been Caroline Wilson who'd done what Gary did. How do you think the media would be playing that story out? Amplify the judgement Gary is facing by 1,000 I'd suggest... Have an honest think about that and maybe rethink where the 'double standards' lie? - Posted from rhpmobile

Well, no surprise I think it's not anyone else's business except there's. They are human beings who have a private life. Why is it our business what they do behind closed doors. Celebrity or not, big deal, no offence op, not ridiculing your topic, just that I'm not a fan of monogamy anyway. I'm so tired of hearing the opinions about people cheating. Guess what, we're all animals at the end of the day and need sexual pleasure. Highly unlikely anyone married for a long period of time is going to be sexually satisfied with their partner completely, without other interraction. I don't care if I get shot down for that comment but I see men of all ages ogle me when the partner isn't looking. For me, a good and stable relationship is one where this is accepted and embraced. I know I break the traditional mould but learn to share and where's the problem. Just my opinion 😉

A couple of things are relevant here: 1. I am in NO way rubbishing mental health issues, but Lyon was on TV two weeks ago and in fine form. Now this has come out and suddenly he's depressed to the point he can't leave his house? Come on. 2. Nothing has been said about Nicki Brownless' involvement. Given she was a bestie of Lyons' ex - very poor form indeed in my view. The only mention of her was that she's a socialite, along with her two daughters, and that she recently emerged from 'hiding' clutching a Louis Vuitton handbag. Very, very much a case of taking two to tango in this case IMO. I would never go near any of my mates' exes (and yes I've had an offer or two) because it's simply poor form. The biggest victim here appears to be Billy Brownless, regardless of whether the respective relationships ended prior to this coming out or not. - Posted from rhpmobile

With a passionate North Melbourne Supporter who remembers all to well the Carey/Stevens mess of the 90's Firstly in no way do I condone cheating in any shape or form and to screw your mate over, pisses me off more The mental health issue is a whole other ball game (personally I think this is a tactic that Channel 9 are employing. I don't believe they were prepared to do a live footy show with Garry as compere and risk him being booed and heckled on the first show of the season starting in a fortnight ..) Is Garry depressed ? yep probably but imho mainly cause his been found out. Its been reported that he was out on the town only 2 weeks ago appearing fine, till this all broke last week, but I could be wrong and its not for me to say, I'm not a mental health expert but I think this is more about Channel 9 protecting their interests. It all seems very convenient, the timing that is. Anyway Double standards perhaps, but the reality is that Lyon and Brownless are public figures and their wives/exes are not (not in their own right) and the story goes beyond adultery . The fact is that these blokes were mates for years , the way I perceive it is that the real story is the breakdown or breakup of this friendship. Adultery and betrayal. Nicky Brownless actions are just as questionable and despicable but I wouldn't know her if I tripped over in the street, but I know who Lyon and Brownless are, so I guess that's why they are getting the media coverage and she isn't. Lyons was a legend footballer and a prolific commentator and perceived as a all round good guy. Now the public know that he has feet of clay, as do we all. We, the public ,do not expect our "heroes" or the people we look up to, to give in to temptation, to be human. We stick them up on a pedestal and we want them to stay there. When they fall, we fall and then we question ourselves. In all honesty as I write this, I cant think of, off the top of my head a similar situation where the women involved are public figures. I'm sure there has been , but I just cant think of any but hell I can think of plenty of well known men doing the dirty. I'm sure the media would love access to Nicky, to report her side of the story. Smart girl is laying low, Id do the same but tipping that her story will appears in New Idea any day now No winners here, everyone's hurting, but feeling for Billy and Melissa. Double standards, ? I think the media are reporting it as it is, the media is currently frustrated cause they want to know more and want to know it all and nobody is saying nothing. Channel 9 gag order

Statistics show that 50% of married individuals admit to cheating on their partners when surveyed in confidential polls. It is estimated that the real number is closer to 70%. I would guess that if the question were to be asked on a public forum then that number would be in the single digits and on the low side of 5%. But there is nothing like some good juicy mud raking gossip to prick the ears up and gossip's favorite target is always the most popular. Nobody wants to hear that Dave Normal got caught out, the response would be "Who??" followed by total disinterest, and there is no fun in wagging the chin over a nobody nobody knows. Cheating is the norm, getting caught is the crime it seems. The moralising hord that lap up the gossip are the ones with the dubious standards. The odds make it highly likely that the outraged parties in this media gossip fest are just as guilty of the crimes they tearfully deplore. Those without guilt should use this as an opportunity to ask their partner "Have you cheated???" Those with balanced minds will not care if the response is yes, they do not need the security blanket of ignorance that has kept way too many happy in our culturally dictated fools paradise. Cheating is more normal than not so why is it always such a surprise...

Quoting 'Twisted_Mister' A couple of things are relevant here: The biggest victim here appears to be Billy Brownless, regardless of whether the respective relationships ended prior to this coming out or not. - Posted from rhpmobile ... sounded to me like Brownless Bill B .... had a hand in making something of this. (he could have just 'let it go' ... ) a bit sad after 2 decades. Is a friends ex out of bounds as a friend? ... of course not ..... at what point does it change, ... fling ... lover ... partner? I was asked at the demise of a close friends marriage to 'choose' ..... as 'I cannot be friends with you if you are talking to them' ?? .... and ended up losing a friend which ever way I chose .... sad as they were both nice people .... and interestingly now not friends with either as the fallout

Garry Lyons will be back in some capacity within a year. I think there's a lot more to the man than this. How the Billy Brownless role plays out I don't know . That's a sticky one. As a NRL man myself and can recall a very high profile player who got caught out screwing a team mates wife. That blew over and now he has a very successful TV program every week.
