Are all condoms created equal?

January 01 2013

After eight years in a monogamous relationship, I've recently started buying condoms again. The number of choices is overwhelming, and I wonder: Are all condoms equal? Or are some condoms more equal than others? Do extra thin condoms give that much more sensation than regular ones? Do ribbed condoms really provide more pleasure for women? What about extra lubricated? A popular option or quite the opposite? I like bringing condoms as a party gift, but wonder if bringing "regular condoms" is a safer bet than any of the above choices. What are your thoughts on non-latex, flavoured and glo-in-the-dark varieties? And do the shapes of condoms, or the reservoirs, really make any difference? I'd love to hear your personal preferences when it comes to type and brand, as well as good or bad experiences you've had. Thanks all!

I can honestly say I have never felt any difference between any of the brands. Maybe it's for the guys benefit. The only time one has made an impression on me if I remember correctly, was one that had a sort of lumpy extension on the end of it. (She scratches her head here, thinking ?..). Hmmm, getting old sucks, can't remember at all.

There is a difference on the guys part, as standard condoms seem to restrict sensation, were as the thin ones allow a lot better feeling during intercourse. Then there's the size, as you would know where all not gifted the same, so maybe a variety would do well.Hope this helps.

I prefer Ansells Skyns - basically because I can cover many of the lame excuses we get told about why a guy cant use condoms - Im allergic to latex (oh look these are latex free), condoms are to thick for me to feel anything (one of the thinner varieties), Im too big for them (hey look these come in large also), and of course those who use a combination of all of those reasons.   I always take my own so that there are no excuses.   Kisses Focus

Hmmm, getting old sucks, can't remember at all. I remember that! I saw condoms once with these lumpy extensions at the end (on the side). They were coloured to look like animals. I can vividly remember a giraffe. Must have been in Amsterdam. Meant to stimulate the G(iraffe)-spot?

I'm allergic to latex , so Skyns are the only one's I use and the sensation is pretty good also. Been so long since I used the regulars , but what I do remember 'is they do kill the sensations somewhat .. The gimmicky one's with the lumps and bumps and all sorts of colours are playful but dont think they do anything special apart from looking different.. Anyhow' be nice if we didnt have to use any at all , but we dont have that choice these days...

There is a preference for thinner condoms so far. Do you think they'll end up replacing regular condoms? And has anyone used the "extended pleasure" ones? Thanks for the comments so far, they've been helpful!

4 seasons naked. When I actually restock lol...I have also noticed the lack of feeling provided by regular condoms. There's ones called ice I think it is, I've heard from an experience friends of my ex wife, that they actually felt a burning sensation, possibly a menthol additive in the lube to give the ice effect?? I'm not sure personally as I've been a little worried about giving them a shot.

If you have allergies avoid the flavoured ones. I cover all my toys, including my hitachi wand, so I use ansell regulars as they are fairly tough. Not all condoms are equal in size and this is usually on the box somewhere. Durex used to make a smaller size that came in a black box. The thinner ones are much better for sensitivity but I have had a couple of them break.

I had always thought they were pretty much the same, but I bought some Skyns a while back and I will be going back for more. They have different sizes and these ones don't seem to "pinch" as much as many others do. Maybe it's also the fact they are latex free, I never considered that before but they do seem to convey a bit more sensation than the standard ones.

Never used Skyns, but now I want to! What a great idea this would for an ad: 90% of Adult Website users choose Skyns, to bring them closer...

I was in a similar position to Ms_D, in a 14 year relationship with no condom usage... So in the past 3 1/2 years I've found two that are definitely my preference - Zero and Skyns... It's not necessarily the thinness, but that they don't cut off circulation as much as thicker brands... Coloured are fun for hide and seek, flavored are yucky, and the thick ones make awesome water balloons ;) A

I had a couple of the standard brands actually become so painful and constricting I had to stop, take it off and put on a new one. I think what was happening was that it was getting pushed down on the head and shaft, compressing everything to the point of pain. No problem with the Skyns though that might be related to them making different sizes. They certainly feel a little more flexible than some of the ordinary ones I have used in the past. Might have to give zero a try, although there is the old saying about "if it isn't broken..."

Of a fun evening with a lady some months back....   The issue of protection was raised and the lovely lady had been assured that we only ever engage in protected encounters, we take this seriously and that we were happy to take responsibility for same.   Clearly, she had heard this one before! Young lady arrived with a bag full of samples (at least 100 I estimate) that she cermoniously tipped onto the coffee table advising Mr Fun "there you go, I wasnt sure which one you would like but you will certainly find something in there to suit you"...   That broke the ice!

I do hope she's able to use them all before they go out of date!

Naked and skyns are the only ones I've used that allow a decent amount of sensitivity. I've had all brands and thicknesses break and they all tend to "roll" up during deep intercourse. Ribbed, flavored, coloured are all there for the novelty effect, offering nothing but "I've tried that"
