You really are hanging out with the wrong crowd. I don't' know any Victorians (either gender) who match your descriptions. None of them close the door.... well actually that is a sweeping generalisation (hmmm...I felt a sense of deja vu when I used that term). Some of them do close the door when at a swingers club, usually to keep over enthusiastic males out. Ahh.... a light bulb moment! Is that why you are so down on your fellow Victorians; they close the door on you at swingers clubs? You have to branch out and get to know more people. This site is what you make of it. So far you seem to be making a hash of it.

Haven't met them all yet,but I will say it seems to be the friendliest state..we have a resort in Scarborough village.I can always pick the Southerners, they look startled and appalled whenever I say hello.Hmm maybe I am just plain scary😱😱xxFreya

When I moved from sydney to bris 13 yrs ago, I was amazed at how many people say hello or comment that its a lovely day etc,as you walk by each other in the street. Was quite a culture shock for me after living in busy sydney where nobody made eye contact, let alone spoke. So I can understand what you mean by southerners looking startled. I was.

Not sure I get the intent of your post (s) as it seems quite polarizing if not divisive? From my experience, there are friendly and good people everywhere and equally bad or undesirable people everywhere. I grew up in coutnry Vic at a time where life is simpler, people around us were very down to earth and spent a lot of time in the bush, coasts or outdoors. My working adult life (after Uni) was spent in Melb working in top 5 financial institutions and the move from coutnry Vic to South Yarra was like a move to a parallel universe. I did see a big lifestyle difference but that is the big smoke for you. Just the dymanics of vig city living vs. small town. Again moving around Australia due to work, I lived in Sydney, a trully international city on par with NY and LA and London. But another really big city, much bigger than melb. I felt like a small fish in a big lake. Another adjustment as I kept two apartments in two of the largest cities in Australia, FIFO style. I wouldn't generalize the people of Melb as such. Too restricting on the potential. Yep, as mentioned above, you are mxing with the wrong crowd. Not my experience at all. Melb people are warm, chilled and can chat with you about anything under the sun while sipping our lattes in any one of our much loved cafes or a beer or wine in a pub. Fashion conscious? yes we are. Nothing wrong with that. We have a more European attitude to fashion and living. Must be our weather. Open your mind to the possibilities and take people at face value. Enjoy them for their company they offer, as individuals before relegating them to a box or label than makes you comfortable. That is where your problem stems from. You pre-empt the interaction with your preconceived ideas. Quite Self-prophesying really. You reap what you sow.

As much as i enjoy a state vs state discussion, it's just for fun and you can't define a state the way you have, it just depends on who you meet and to a large degree, how you steer your own destiny. Much of it is up to us, we are the masters of our own destiny - Posted from rhpmobile

Ok it's a more in depth look at how ppl see where they live, not a rehash, Freya and Willow tree, that's the sort of stuff I am asking thank you. wet paint, what is the Melbourne you know? Kissk never been to a swingers club, just not my thing, I'll try to get out more, if I do, does that mean you will cease with the put downs, or is it something you don't know your doing. So what is your opinion of Melbourne ppl that is different to mine? - Posted from rhpmobile

Im sure not all Melbournites are the same and as you so ignorantly describe. Just a thought, it may not be everyone else....it could be your attitude. - Posted from rhpmobile

Ill try and be as compact as you........females, friendly, fun loving, fabulous.....males, sports mad, laid back, make amazing friends. Politicians.....not really interested, they all seem to break promises.....sexual exploration....rife! Perth is seemingly known as the swinger capital of Australia. Its a "fun"place to be! I love living here. This is just a generalisation of the people I have met? (Outwith RHP also).

for calling me ignorant,Spiteful and resentful. Could you please explain what I'm ignorant, spiteful and resentful about, I am simply making an observation based on my perspective. At no time did I say it was correct, and it was all encompassing, your comment could be positive as ignorance can be bliss. Didn't your mother teach you, if you have anything nice to say....... The point I am making here is that there are certain cultural differences in different places, some subtle some extreme. Talk to a New Yorker as opposed to a Texan, incredibly different perspectives, in the main.I see the same here, certainly not as extreme as that example but none the less quite different. It those differences I am exploring here, and I am trying to see if they spill over into the bedroom. Perth is a lovely place, but I am content sitting in the Latte sipping capitol of Australia.

I deliver. My Victoria - and as always this is my opinion and I am quite happy if the following can be classed as sweeping generalisations: Sports mad, open minded, resilient (the weather makes us that way), inquisitive, stylish. Had you asked for a description of Melbournites it would be different again. I then would include urbane, sexy, progressive, and inclusive. I think that is our point Wizzy; it is nigh on impossible to describe a whole state in such broad terms.

There are so many variables and I don't think it is possible to work this out state to state. I am from country Victoria and I love to visit Melbourne as it has always been more accepting of me than my city which is a little straight and stale, though a lovely town to raise kids. The one thing that does strike me every time I am in Melbourne is I find people a bit too fast, caught up in their own world and not as friendly as here especially when it comes to a smile which rarely leaves my face, I guess that is city living in general though. I have met many great people there though. I do think though that so much of Victoria is judged by Melbourne which in my experience is far from the true Victoria and I am sure that goes for all states, the capitals are the things our states get judged on. Just reading the forums here kind of reflects that with most emphasis on the major cities

my brother who lives in melbourne takes a printed disclaimer, whenever we go out to dinner, just in case I unpack my personality whilst visiting....lol The last time I ventured down there, it ended in my sister in law telling me to stop flirting with everyone I came across..... What can I say??? You can't come across anyone without a little flirting first right?? :p - Posted from rhpmobile

The responses still does not prove anything as you will still get the same attitudes or behaviour depending on the lifestyle and geography (i.e. Country vs City). For example. living in a small country town vs large city, regardless of State. And within the city itself, there are friendly locals like where I live in, an affluent relaxed beachside suburb as opposed to exclusive Toorak or more working class Dandenong or Frankston. Same could be said and found of people from Kirribili to Wollonggong to Bondi to Balmain or Sutherland shire in NSW. I still could nto see the intent of your post. I may be lost here so maybe some clarification would help. Hmp! back to my strong soy latte for me... Garcon!! some grilled ham and cheese croissant please. Merci!!!!

What a load of piffle... How can we generalise like that? We cannot... and if you do YOU WILL BE WRONG. Why do I even dignify this stream of drivel with a post... Perhaps because there are certainly distinct differences between stereotypes we see as representing some parts of our wide brown land... FNQ... Yes they all speak with a strong strayan accent and wear cowboy hats and drink beer... and that's the women. Everyone on the Gold Coast wears long white socks and white shoes... and originally came from Vic or NSW. Tasmanians are interbred... we all know that. South Australians... well what can you say... Sydneysiders are all corrupt... like their police and politicians. Perth people... swim with sharks... have chips on their shoulders about "Easterners" and all wear smelly fleuro shirts because they work in the mines. Melbourne people are just dull and grey like their buildings and all they do is sit on the pavement (in the cold) drinking skinny latte. Maybe I was wrong... no... I was not... there may be stereotypes... but that is all they are... cartoon characters of vastly divergent populations.

Basically whizz I agree with Kissk's Melbournites. The Melbourne you describe I left 27 years ago, but then I was a different man then too. I have visited Melbourne on occasions since and found it mature raunchy and eager. 😜

The things I am talking about are outside the socio economic boundaries. My point is I think Victorians are very conservative in the way they interact with others and their views. I am not saying this is a negative thing, just a different approach to say Sydney siders who tend to have more flamboyant attitudes to life in general. Queenslanders would be happy if they could be their own country, devoid of the rest of us. I find Tasmanians are individually social but not as a group. I think there are definable nuances that are created by demographics. These are the things I mean regardless of individual personalities or community standing. It requires some thought hence the question to reach a definable answer.

personally, I completely disagree with your views wrt to different states and your approach. No further thinking required for me as it does not achieve anything constructive for me nor further established anything of value to me in how I perceived people in each state. So what is next in your next topic, State Vs. State in the types of beer we make? Are we going to run the gamut of interstate comparison? Good luck.

I'm so glad you chose to comment on piffle, stereotypical or not, what you said is a common thought process about people from other places. stereotypical by definition can be an uncritical judgement. Why do we cast these stereotypes if they are so meaningless? Now about different beers

Before reading engage sense of humour. Sydney siders are Snobs and bigots. Melbournians are cool. Brisbanites are corrupt, criminals and scammers. Perthites are cashed up bogans. Hobartions are classy greenies but a bit backward (in a nice way) Canberrans are a bunch of hypocrites (why can they have fireworks ?) Adelaide type people, quietly go about their business without crowing about it. Darwinians are laid back and down to earth quietly obeying (Charles) Darwin's law.
