May 28 2014

As an offshoot from MisterGreen's topic...what are your favourite zombie movies and books? I have a few but I'll start things off with just one; Planet Terror...half of the Tarantino / Rodriguez Grindhouse feature (the other half Death Proof is also one of my favourite movies). Go!!

Want to see Dead Snow but it's not easy to find. I really couldn't get into the movie version of World War Z. I don't think Brad Pitt was the the right person for it, and other aspects of it annoyed me as well. Another good one is 28 Days Later (British).

That got me checked all my doors and windows after I got home from the cinema was the remade of "Dawn of the Dead"! I was freaked out because it was about a virus spreading and consuming human brains, and it could possibly happen one day in the future! Resident Evil is another favourite of mine, but I didn't get scared from watching it, because I saw it after I saw Dawn of the Dead lol The Conjuring was also a favourite and I have seen it 3 times lol I'm all into horror movies lol - Posted from rhpmobile

The Tunnel An investigation into a government cover-up leads to a network of abandoned train tunnels deep beneath the heart of Sydney. As a journalist and her crew hunt for the story it quickly becomes clear the story is hunting them. Pretty freaky movie. Aussie horror. Don't watch it if you don't like the dark.

There is a small independent Australian movie called Wyrmwood which I don't think is out yet but the YouTube trailers are awesome! The trailer is like a mini movie to semi explain the feature film. It looks like Mad Max with zombies. Zombieland is brilliant. Bill Murray's in it for gods sake! - Posted from rhpmobile

But 28 Days Later managed to do it. The only thing worse than a zombie is a zombie that can sprint. While it's on fire. - Posted from rhpmobile

It's like watching a documentary the most realistic horror film I've ever seen and there is no way I would let the kids watch it, it's a grown ups one. But even it gets my hair raised thinking of going into a dark tunnel again and we near lived in them as kids. The tunnels are actually under Kings cross, Sydney. They were underneath us at the meet and greet, spooky.

Quoting 'Luckdragon23' I Am Legend. I cry when the dog dies I heard about the dog, so I never watched the movie. I just checked out the 50 Best Zombie Movies on IMDb (Though they cheated by including the The Walking Dead series) and decided I have some watching to do.

I also really liked Pride Prejudice and Zombies and the prequel Dawn of the Dreadful. Guess i like comedy with my zombies... Zombieland was okay, but if you ask me thats just another chick flick disguised as a bloke flick (let me point out i don't mind chick flicks, i just don't like it when disguising the chick flickiness is pretty much the whole premise of the movie). I liked 28 days later better than 28 weeks later. "Cornetto!"

Some good ones already mentioned here which are on our lists... Movie-wise, the original "Dawn of the Dead" has a pretty good spot there, and the 2004 remake was actually pretty decent too. The "28 Days" series was another good hit and already summed up rather well by Twisted_Mister; bugger zombies that can run! We both quite enjoyed "I Am Legend," Miss Taleros more so as it's one of her higher picks. On the funnier/satirical side of zombie horror movies, "The Cabin in the Woods" does have zombies so we say it counts though they may not be the main focal point of what is a truly brilliant entry to the horror/slasher genre in recent years. We were also quite taken with "Warm Bodies," which was quite a quirky story exploring where this genre hasn't really trod before. Lastly, couldn't go past "Zombieland" (though more my pick than Miss') which has also gotten a few mentions in here... If there is ever a zombie apocalypse then don't forget to double tap. Book-wise, the zombie genre doesn't have quite as much to pick from as movies do, and as a form of literature the genre isn't really Miss Taleros' thing. Even for me, the number of ones experienced are quite limited and there is really only the one standout. It has been mentioned in here a couple of times already but that was as a TV show whereas I bring it in as the book it originally is, and that would be "The Walking Dead." That AMC TV hit is based off of a comic which I have been a fan of for many years before the show even began, and while the TV show has it's up and downs in quality and story, the comic has proven to be a far better experience overall. As far as zombie apocalypses go, this really shows that the worst enemy we'd be facing isn't the shambling undead horrors themselves but the people still left alive and the bleakness of civilisations that we'd be left with. While the TV show has some moments, the comic has a whole lot more dark, harder hitting and tragic moments that go to show it, and put it ahead.

If you're interested with Wyrmwood keep an eye on it. A friend of a friend is working on the film and I've heard it is in post production and they're spending what small money they have left to try and polish it up with little bits of digital enhancement (digital blood and gore). I've also heard they're not sure if it will get a cinema release so they maybe trying to independently sell blu-ray copies of the film with posters etc - Posted from rhpmobile

Will keep an eye out for when they release it to go and watch it, bit of a Dawn of the Dead and Mad Max mash up vibe, and always up for supporting local film/arts.

Ah so you've read World War Z? I cant believe Max Brooks sold out his story. The book is way to vast to be made into a 2 hour Hollywood movie. In the capable hands of HBO, World War Z would be unmissable. Horror/zombie fan or not, the scope and depth this story would be a hit with everyone. Each episode could be an interview and each chapter from the book would be a whole season. The only problem is The Walking Dead. Those unfamiliar with the book will automatically think it is just a series riding on the coat tails of TWD, where true book fans would salivate over the prospect of seeing brought to life scenes from the book such as The Battle of Yonkers, The Celebrity Mansion Sacking, The Shores of India, The Redecker Plan and The Veiw From Orbit.

No I haven't read WWZ yet, I've had it for awhile but haven't been in much of a reading mood lately. Even without reading it though I thought the movie was pretty crappy. Your idea of making it into a tv show sounds good, I'd say there's a good chance it will be one day.

Quoting 'ShyPrincess74' Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland for movies, and World War Z the book. I also love "If I were a zombie" the song - YouTube it, it's very cute. Just watched / listened to this one...love it!! So catchy!

Ending was a bit stupid, but still not bad at all.

Not sure I'd class that thing as a zombie when comparing it to other ones we have for comparison, but it is still a pretty terrifying creature irregardless. Considering they have a pretty shoe string budget of about $35000 to make the film, they did a decent job. Using the environment and setting to play up the fear and uneasy really was making good use of what they had. Just the thought of what may possibly be lurking in the hidden, derelict tunnels can be just as scary. Worth checking out for everyone, and it is freely available to all. The makers actually released it as a torrent of their own through BitTorrent, giving the film a legal, free online release for any and all to take advantage of.
