Box Set Blunders

March 11 2016

Remember that series you were obsessed with years ago? And then you see the box set and think "I must have that." Only to watch it or some of it and wonder what on earth you were thinking? What is your box set. Mine is Dawsons Creek - watching all these years later was just.......well there are no words. Anyone game to fess up?

Yep that was one of my favs as a kid. I have another confession - the original 90210! Maybe if you haven't bought a box set, but a saw a series on Foxtel making a come back and got excited, only to sit there perplexed?

yes I still have a boxed set for 'The secret life of us' which I loved. Set in Melbourne, group of friends in an apartment block, trendy, loved the bar they went to, the music was awesome and even gay action mmm had it all going on. Ran from 2001 to 2005. Samuel Johnson cracked me up, and I was strangely turned on by him or his character, the chemistry his character and Claudia Karvan's character shared, was really hot. Great show, though have to play it in the computer these days, no tv and all (by choice) but every few months I'll throw something in to watch

I stand by all my viewing choices, I only ever got the good ones on boxed sets :-) Secret Life of Us was great, until it just wasn't. Same as when we were all welcomed to The OC (bitch), but then everyone left and so did the enjoyment. Heartbreak High was one that started strong and then seemed to fall in a heap - it was a fun set though, we used to do extras work for them playing street hockey and roller blading around in the background (and eating all the lollies out of the jars in the shark bar or whatever it was called) Don't be knocking the Knight Rider, or Airwolf, A-Team, Hardcastle and McCormick, or Greatest American Hero (I'm counting the cape as a vehicle).

I don't have any box sets I'm embarrassed about but there were shows I watched as a kid that would never make it today. Who can remember these tarnished gems from the vault?- BJ and the Bear- The Dave Allen Show- Catweazel

Quoting 'Andremmo'- Catweazel Catweazele was before my time, but whenever I hear the name it makes me think of Worzel Gummidge I wish they'd do a Curiosity Show box set

Yeah, secret life of us lost it's appeal towards the end. Short and sweet is always best rather than the producers trying to flog a dead horse. I also have 'cold feet' British series which was great for a whole lot of reasons, not the least being it was fast, storyline evolved quickly, then it ended at the appropriate time IMHO

I used to have the 'six feet under' boxed set, which was incredible, that trumps everything else for me, best show ever, clever and perfectly cast 😃

Quoting 'misskez'Buffy the vampire slayer, Angel was hot!!! c'mon pet, I think you meant Spike Buffy was a brilliant show, I don't know how that could feature in a thread about shows that suck in retrospect. I'd put Melrose Place as a potential candidate for the box set of shame variety

I ever acquired was the NZ show Outrageous Fortune. I am very ashamed to say I still haven't watched past the first 2 episodes, not because it isn't good but because I have the attention span of the dog from 'Up' (*squirrel!!*) and I just never got around to watching the rest of it. I will some day

And it had the best ending ever as Claire the daughter drove off in the hearse. Was interesting to see Lauren Ambrose appearing in the new X files. I am wondering if they are setting that up for a new run with new characters?

Timeless classic that can be watched over and over again in any random order. It is also a great social lube - rarely you'll be in a group where at least someone will not give you an approval nod for 'soup nazi' or 'it has moved' or 'I always wanted to pretend to be an architect'. LOL - Posted from rhpmobile

Quoting 'beebs' Memory is a funny thing....I was sure it was the big green hearse she drove away in but just looked it up and it was a Prius. Very powerful all the same. They certainly didn't pull any emotional punches with that ending. Even had me teary, which I think was mostly because of Sia's 'Breathe Me' which is so beautiful and sad. It usually appears on the lists of the best tv show finales.

  • RHP

    RHP User

Yes, the finale was incredible and a great way to give closure or a quick glimpse into how their lives played out, with Claire cruising along, into her future. I'll have to look up the music now to refresh my memory, can't remember it. The way they structured every episode with someone dying at the start, and the sexual chemistry between Nate and Brenda and her sexy character, wow. I forget David's boyfriend, Keith I think his character was, he was hot

Quoting 'Reedgee' Timeless classic that can be watched over and over again in any random order. It is also a great social lube - rarely you'll be in a group where at least someone will not give you an approval nod for 'soup nazi' or 'it has moved' or 'I always wanted to pretend to be an architect'. LOL too many to count from that show Tuttle, Vandelay Industries, "indian giver.. I'm sorry I'm not familiar with that term", the black and white cookie, puffy jackets, or if you're ever rushing out for an alarm - it might have looked frantic to the untrained eye (and you must raise a finger there) but someone needed to lead the way. Is anybody here a marine biologist? (but how can these end up on a list of box set fails?)

Hi Soft. :-) I've been watching Prisoner. I did manage to get sucked in again after initial reluctance, lol! Lost in Space is another, earlier example. That also sucked me in again in the last few months, LOLer! Land of the Giants. So many others but those are the most recent. Peachy ;-)

Quoting 'beebs' Memory is a funny thing....I was sure it was the big green hearse she drove away in but just looked it up and it was a Prius. Very powerful all the same. But drove off in the white primus as she had a car crash in the hearse , a few episodes earlier, which was significant , as it represented that everything was indeed changing for the Fisher family. Best ending ever ( I recently read a interview about the last episode with the writer and he said it was so obvious to end the show the way they did but initially he never even though of it. It was his assistant that came up wit the idea - he wrote the last episode in one sitting over a weekend ) and totally agree with LD . Sia's "Breathe Me' still gets me every single time I hear itI have so many boxed collections which I've now dumped to Hard Drive as I can watch a great show over and overOld Favs are Six Foot Under, Moonlighting, Murphy Brown, Downton Abbey, Cold Feet, ER, Frasier, Mad, Men, Offspring, Hustle, How I met your Mother, Secret Diary of a Call Girl, The Office, The Sopranos, West WingLook, the list goes on, but my current shame is: Dance Moms, Please don't judge me

  • RHP

    RHP User

oh wow ChiChi, that's really dipping into the vault there with Moonlighting. I don't judge for semi-scripted reality TV addiction: Geordie Shore, Ibiza Weekender, Ex on the Beach... then tomorrow at 12pm I'll be camped out live tweeting The Bachelor streamed as it airs from the USA (waiting 9 hours for the Aussie broadcast is for suckers :p ), and Hockey Wives is finally back on the 16th :-) be back soon, Billions and Walking Dead have just come out
