I would allow everyone to spend a month in an animals body / mind. See the world through their eyes. Whether it be an Eagle, a Cat (wild or tame) a dog, a wolf a bear, etc etc. Animals are so basic, yet so clever. They aren't out to destroy the world, but live in harmony with it. As stupid as it sounds, from the years I have had dogs / cats / birds or fish they have taught me soo soo much, yet they've never spoken a single word to me.

I think the reasons why are obvious.... IMO religion incites hate, religion kills, religion harbours criminals, they need to ban the education of such teachings in schools, instead of Religious Instruction we need Life Instruction...growing your own food, how to change a tyre....skills we utilise in our daily lives.. I understand people need something to believe in, to worship... A higher being.. She is... Mother Nature, embrace her creations, protect, nurture, preserve.... What a Wonderful World... What a Wonderful Dream! Thinking of the Parisians and their families xx

"Singing to comfort Bentley in the hospital" on you tube. If we had just a little bit of that ability to love and care toward our fellow beings on this planet, the world would be wonderful. For those who don't know the story, Bentley had a serious illness (hence his appearance) and went blind. She is singing to calm him on the way to the hospital to stop his distress. If we could look past the species, appearances, etc and just cared a lil bit more about who we share this space with.

And replace it with humility and the worship (if we must worship) and protection of the natural environment and other species. A curb on human breeding (population). We are way too many at the expense of everything else. Yes and religion is a curse ( or perhaps its megalomania actually).

I completely agree. We send children to school to learn, not be indoctinated. Religion and belief in a higher being was a way in which humans tried to explain the cause for things which were beyond there comprehension at the time. For example, what causes the rain to fall, it must be a rain god. This has since been supplanted by the scientific method which seeks to understand the true reasons for the amazing things we experience everyday. The scientific method and critical thinking skills will serve a child much better in both their early development and adult life. I don't agree that we "have to believe" in something. The universe is incredible enough as it is without the need for invoking supernatural beings. Besides, children should be taught HOW to think, not what to think. If, once they've matured cognitively and emotionally and they still feel drawn to a god or religion, then that's their decision. But religious indoctination of anyone can only lead to an "us against them" outcome. We've seen the attrocities of religious war countless times throughout history. So, after my little rant, I guess the one thing I would change would be to erradicate this type of superstisious thinking, or at least find more of a balance.

Crimes threaten our living environment and the lives of our loved ones and.........our own! What a Wonderful Dream! Thinking of the Parisians and their families xx As a rational person I cannot comprehend how it is OK to start wars in name of religion that A, is not compulsory B, highly subjective. all other species on the planet fight for things such as territory, shelter, food, mating etc..only homo sapiens is capable of declaring war over something that is "intengible" and is not even proven to exist! This blows my mind. I am not disrespectful of religious people - nothing wrong with being religious and doing that in private but I cannot get my head around how it is OK to run campaigns to enforce one's personal belief onto someone else -yet human kind has been doing this all throughout history...killing eachother in the name of "belief" but not for food or shelter etc..if this is the higher level of consciousness then thank you very much I would like to be reborn as an ape and fight over banana. My heart is going out to Parisians and everyone else who is living in fear anywhere in the world - it looks like this is the sign of things to come..now where did I put my bug-out bag....

1. Get out of the middle east entirely - won't happen re oil etc. 2. Put a fence round the joint and isolate. 3. International community step up and clean the slate - properly. The last "sleeping giant" that was woken is waning, although still holds some power. France, sometimes dismissed as an arrogant lot may (more than likely will) take the lead, after all someone has to. As one who follows macro issues, it's interesting times ahead.

Quoting 'Jonny_o' Religion and belief in a higher being was a way in which humans tried to explain the cause for things which were beyond there comprehension at the time. But I actually think there's a bit more to it...otherwise these days we wouldn't have many people following a religion and clearly that's not the case (ok education does play a part there of course but not entirely...many very well educated people are still religious). I think another big factor is the fact that we have the awareness that we will die, and that scares most people. They don't want to believe that once you die, that's it, you're no more. Religion provides people with a crutch in that sense, the idea that if you do what this being expects of you then you'll live on in some sort of eternity. I think also that despite our big brains and all our collective intelligence, deep down as a species humans are not very rational. That, plus we have a lot of other collective reasoning and behavioural flaws that religion both addresses and magnifies. It's very complex.

The point of sale to make the idea or change actuall . Even though we have our own belief and skill set of life to know its a need to a happy ending . There will always be this arse of a thing called goverments and politics . The steps and hoops that bind the constupation of constitutions will revert to and an old testiment flap splat of a new way and probably go on a jet set to mars on a fact find that you found . Life is the most important thing besides laughter and before our breath blows out our last candle , as said the suits will take the cake away . FACT .

I agree, death can be a very scary thought, and trust me, even though I am an atheist, nothing would provide me with more comfort than if there was a God or higher being looking after things and providing me with happiness in life after death. Hower, as a scientist, the evidence is just not there. There have been many studies done which have use functional resonance imaging (fMRI) and neurbiology which has indicated a possible "God gene" which, when stimulated with precisice low voltage electrical current, or chemicals, causes a person to experience feelings of bliss, happiness and oneness with the universe. This may be prexisting biological charactestic in our early ancestors. However, it is also possible that its presence was the result of natural selection. Our cognitive and psychological evolution has rapidly outpace our biological evolution and many of the traits that essential for survival in our early ancestery have not yet had the time to be selectively die off so to speak. You hit the nail on the head Luck_Dragon when you said that "religion provides people with a crutch". It is a psychological crutch to deal with the mind crushing reality that we are not the centre of existence and that when we die, the world will not end and things will go on very much as they were before. In fact, very few people are remebered past two or more generations, and that is among their immediate family at most. Despite this, my opinion is that I would rather take this brief blink of an eye that is my life and live every second grateful for the incredible opportunity it is. In fact, knowing that this is it, makes me appreciate it all the more, the good and the bad. There are many who will happily accept the slight limp, and walk on their own through life, than to accept the assistance of the imaginary crutch. Having said this, I want to make it clear that this is how I live MY life and I am not in anyway saying it is better or worse than how another person chooses to live theirs. Despite my views on the religious system of belief on the whole, I don't really care one way or the other if someone chooses this way of life or not. What is important to me, in fact THE most important point of all, is that, in living your life, be it religious, scientific, agnostic, or any of the many other ways people choose to live, that your actions do not cause harm, or through inaction result in avoildable harm to any other person. We're here for such a short time, and we all know that life is hard enough without making it harder for everyone, when, at least theoretically, we all have the ability to coexist with each other and with our environment.

(Apologies to all vegans and those of certain religious persuasions) Put automatic grilled-bacon dispensers at approximately 100 metre intervals on every street. All you would have to do is walk up and press a button, wait a couple of minutes and voila! World peace would abound...

Hower, as a scientist, the evidence is just not there. I'm an atheist as well, and a science advocate. Unfortunately we have plenty of evidence that for many people, you can provide them with mountains of scientific evidence and it doesn't change a thing wrt their religious beliefs (not to mention many other beliefs). That's why getting rid of religion entirely is just about impossible as far as I see it...at least while humans are at the level they're at in terms of some of these innate psychological needs that people seem to rely on religion to fulfill.

Religion is man made laws following other mens instruction under the guise of " this is god's law and we are the only true religion". Spirituality is a connection on a totally different level coming from within and being the opposite of hate and discrimination.Totally 2 different approaches to a belief in a higher power.Sadly, its the religious beliefs for many centuries that have been a catalyst for hatred and war.

I would eradicate ignorance. Ignorance creates an unwillingness to open the mind and learn about those who are different, which tends to breed fear. Fear breeds hate... and hate makes people do some pretty messed up things. Oh... and I would create a national holiday in honour of Nutella. :)

We're here for such a short time, and we all know that life is hard enough without making it harder for everyone, when, at least theoretically, we all have the ability to coexist with each other and with our environment. The issue -in my views- comes from trying to enforce one's belief "mental crutch" so to say on others. No other species does that. Home sapiens thinks it is "ok" to demand others to share the same views as the other one. Religion X says that one shall not drink coffee (coming up with an unreal example for demonstration purposes only). There are group of people who like the "mental crutch" religion X and complying with the rules becomes important for their sense of wellbeing so they only drink tea. No issue whatsover. This does not mean that they have a right to enforce the WHOLE humanity to drink tea only. Why is one's "mental crutch" entitles one to enforce their views over someone else. This is the behavioural issue that homo sapiens are unique for - no other species on the planet does this. We humans want other to be like us - whatever it takes. This is the source of most conflicts in history - "I want others to be/do/believe etc like I do". The lack of ability to accepting diversity in such as a diverse species as homo sapiens is truly remarkable to see - no other species make war on their fellow members for being "out of the norm" or at least we have not yet observed apes starting a war against other apes because they preferred mango over banana...

Reading the answers to this post, I get that most of the forumites are empathic, care for the environment, and have lots of love in their hearts. My RHP friends Ive made since Ive joined are the same also. Not so people I know outwith RHP (although not all) but most, some of whom express that they dont give 2 hoots about wars, our kids futures and the environment. Is there a connection to being open minded and non judgemental to being caring? Well, same here, I would love to see mans hatred for other people to dissolve, and for people to strive more to protect our beautiful planet.

I don't think there's much of a link... I think it's just some of us try to keep things light hearted while there's so much negativity in this world..... I for one don't like concentrating on all the doom and gloom and I strive to keep people laughing and smiling.....after all laughter is still the best medicine on days that seem covered in cloud....and when there are cloudy days when tend to forget that there's still sunlight; else it'd be night time :) - Posted from rhpmobile

About improving life or our planet in any way probably wouldn't respond to this thread anyhow. So naturally most responses to this have been positive. Stirry (and a few other regulars I have seen on the forums) have a great outlook on life, posting sensible yet challenging at times, upbeat posts in most cases, which are entertaining, thoughtful, considerate and provoking thought. These are mostly who are replying positively here and in other topics as well. A little off subject, but my take on stressful situations, to compliment Stirry's last offering is this.. Why Worry? If you can do something about it then go do it. If you can't, then stop worrying and get on with life - You can't do anything about it so accept that's the way things are and make the best of the situation.

I believe no religion is violent. (Some) people are violent, and they'll make their religion match their own agenda. A lover I just met was raised in a very religious community and turned his back on it because people there only accepted one explanation for every sentence in the bible, and more often than not it was one to suit them. I've used the phrase Jack posted a few times too and got some shocked faces! ;-) Thanks for your responses everyone. I agree with Koko, lots of empathy which is great to see x

If I could change one thing, it would be to make violence extinct. A world where everyone communicated their needs and feelings in a healthy way. Two people I have the greatest respect for are Marshall Rosenberg author of "Non Violent Communication" and Nelson Mandela. So violence for me would be a gonner! ;o)

One thing to change in the world huh. Okay, I'd make it possible for us all, yeah, all seven billion odd of us, to move to Mars. Give the planet a rest for a few years. I guess too, living in closer quarters may force us all to get along a bit better. Then, at some point, we can return, changed ourselves, to a changed world. Well, there were no rules with the question right? I think we know the answer as to why. Mr. urn. .
