Cock in a sock

March 26 2014

So the latest cancer awareness initiative to hit the ground is the 'cock in a sock' campaign, which "...involves nude men putting socks on their penises ala the Red Hot Chili Peppers to raise money for testicular and prostate cancers." Reactions are mixed...some love it, not least because most of the guys posting photos obviously spend quite a lot of their time at the gym, and have - from what you can tell with a sock over it - big cocks (the cynic might say that some of these guys are posting because it is a morally acceptable way to show off their bodies and their manhood, even though the latter is covered...although I would say that most of those sort of guys don't have qualms showing off their bodies at any time). Others are not quite so enthusiastic about the whole thing and claim that it really does nothing to raise awareness and that - much like some of the breast cancer campaigns - the sexualisation of such issues trivialises them and makes a mockery of the people who have gone through hell with, and died from, these illnesses. It also raises the question of what about those cancers that don't have the advantage of being able to be tied to sexual imagery in order to 'raise awareness' and get publicity. Can you imagine a campaign for bowel cancer along the lines of, 'Tossin' salad for cancer awareness!!' (no I didn't make that one up, someone else did). What are your thoughts about all of this?

You let people post all manner of non sex-related topics in Hot Topics, but decide to put mine in Off Topic when I originally posted it in Girls Ask, even though mine does actually have a reference to sex. You suck.

Unbelievable. LD, it's not the cancer thing so much, if it raises funds for a cause then every little bit helps, it reached us, so they got you with the idea, it's working. It's the thing with charity is the point for the moment. I'm left a bit sour to the idea some people see charity as just a way for making a good buck. To go out and put on the sincere face and give the spiel for faith, a few dollars here a few more there, put on a bit of a show to grab a whole bunch in one scoop, then sometime soon after just fade away. Who thinks twice to it?? You know, by the time they calculate the cost to finance the event at an extravagant inflated hourly rate, then claim the losses, round the taken dollars down to 20 cents a piece. Not much gets to these accounts, certainly no big media event handing the check over, just a quiet overnight deposit. Then claim the best part of that back in tax. Did you know there is people out there doing that? Mado Mado Tara xx

I'd do it. But I'm against those raising awareness for yourself things. Anyone who isn't already aware of cancer by now must already be in dire need of assistance themselves. I donate as much money to charities as I can anyway, self promotion isn't going to change that or somehow increase the amount of money I can afford to give. Like most of those facebook causes, it's just a way for people to show off while pretending theyre doing it for something other than themselves.
