Curious about 'Nearby'

May 04 2013

I'm curious about the accuracy of the Nearby function on the RHP app. Specifically, how accurate the distances are. And here's why I ask: would it be possible to arrange a meet, but not give a definitive location, using the accurate setting to play a bit of hide n seek/treasure hunt to make it even more interesting? And moreover, has anyone tried it?- Posted from rhpmobile

It's not that accurate a friend and myself tried it sitting next to each other and it said < 500 Mtrs - Posted from rhpmobile

I was using the app before but deleted it after a week or 2, because it annoyed the crap out of me with the constant flirt, email, and Nearby push notifications, especially when I go into the city lol but I did notice that the app only gave an approximate location of the nearby members. It could be fun to use the app to play a bit of hide/seek or treasure hunt if all parties are in the mood, I see no harm done. But I personally haven't tried it and I am no longer using the app because of all the push notifications it sends every minute 😡 Have fun TimnJenn, would be good to hear your feedback on trying it when you're done with it :-)

Not that accurate. Mine tells me a kilometre away and there is a lot of space in one kilometre if you are hiding things- Posted from rhpmobile

Android phones have an actual GPS in them, this leads to better accuracy. IPhones have a triangulation from the three nearest phone towers, this can lead to them being several kilometres out.

I never use the app but would increasing accuracy also increases the chance of you being stalked? I think maybe it's better to leave the location vague and leave it to the persons to arrange a definitive place.Although hide and seek does sound very fun, but I can see people using it for bad purposes.

I always thought the idea of a proximity function as a bit odd........ its only really relevant if you want to meet someone right here, right now.......and lets be honest, thats hardly EVER the case in here.DG

That's kind of what I had expected, that it wouldn't get down to a +\-10m degree of accuracy. As suggested, possibly due to the potential for misuse. Having said that, as Sweetgem points out, if all parties are up for it and have actively selected the accurate setting for that particular purpose, then I don't see the harm. Perhaps something to be suggested to the site admins for the next App update?- Posted from rhpmobile
