Disappearing act

March 28 2013

Has anyone else out there ever thought about disappearing from the world of their mobile phone, from the likes of Facebook, rhp n other technology - for a least a week? It is a challenge which I'm thinking of doing!

I have often thought of just shutting everything down, not having to worry about important emails, missed phone calls etc, and just relying soley on face to face interaction. I think it would be something really interesting as most of these days at a social get together there are many people that sit on their own, updating their status, and checking their emails, instead of striking up a conversation with someone in view. I think it would be really hard to stop......It's funny we made these devices to make life easier, yet somehow, they have totally consumed our ives

I travel, and I turn of my phone and I hardly ever watch TV I could easy do without it all.   I always wanted to open a bed and breakfast down here in Mandurah where there was NO tv, no phones no computer and people would have to actually talk to each other.   Its like all things in life, moderation is the key, and also shut them all off for at least one day a week.   Why dont you all try it for one day, and write how it was for you.   Make it a weekend day so you can get out and mingle and perhaps talk to a total stranger while having a coffee or what ever.   I understand if you have kids etc or family restrictions but just think how your life would be if all this stuff went? could you survive?   Have you lost your social skills from to much online stuff, have you lost your meeting people of the oposite sex because the internet is like ordering what you want ? As if a person is something you buy online..humans pigeon holed.   Talk to that plain woman, that not so hot guy and see just how interesting they can be wihtout their pants off.   once you have had that nail biting experiece, let us all know how it went.

I work in IT and am surrounded by technology 24x7... nothing is more enjoyable than going bush (or beach) with nothing but the basics and no technology other than a functioning car and nobody for miles and miles.   Yep, dig the latrine, sleep under the stars and wash in the creek... ah the good ol' days.   Most people I know couldn't go more than 12 hours without their iPhone etc... very few women I know could deal with no toilet. Any 'rough camper chicks' out there?

We camped in a cow paddock last year, and i was the only one who could handle the makeshift toilet we set up, and bathing in the lovely clear creek waters. The men of the group all drove in to town to use the Pub's toilets-so dont be so harsh to put shit (pardon the pun) on girls!!!

It was interesting. Though, I did hear that the kids would walk down to a local shop somewhere and buy lollies when they weren't being filmed.

Do everything in moderation. I suggest having one online free day a week, say a Sunday where you give facebook, RHP, youtube, whatever a break. Like Amicus, I work in IT too. I want to get away from a computer screen after work. Once I go home, I just read a book. Granted it is a kindle but my paperbacks are in boxes. Sure, my phone beeps every message I get but I usually ignore it until 8am the next morning.Another way is to travel. You would be too busy enjoying yourself to bother checking facebook or RHP. Good luck.

*smiles* BELIEVE me.. it wasn't a walk for children. And the kids DIDN'T do it It was a 5 kilometre hike through very dangerous cliffs, and shit.. OR a swim across and down a very treacherous tidal river. One of the female convicts nearly came to grief one night.. and was dragged over by another of the convicts after she lost direction and was stuck mid stream in the current, and being taken to "god knows where.." Two of the convicts took one of the Families daughters into the road house.. but they got caught.. *grins* and I wasn't one of them ;)   Same couple of the Convicts used to go and get into a little mischief.. but hell.. they were convicts anyway.. and REAL convicts of that time did the same shit.   Some AMAZING stories came out of that show.. and some of the fun times were .. well.. EXCELLENT!!

I went on a cruise last year and it was bliss. No phone no Internet nothing. It was the most relaxing holiday I have ever had.   There is occassionaly internet connections available on board but I just didnt bother with it. Seriously if anything had happened back home I couldnt have done anything about it anyway. So I just forgot about it, relaxed and had fun.   Cant wait to do it again.

Ticklish, I keep on imagining aliens would attack the cruise ship from underwater, ala The Kraken wakes by John Wyndham. I have never been on a cruise. Was the food excellent? Which liner did you take? Going on a cruise has always been on my bucket list. I heard they are not single people friendly though.

I did this myself for 10 days almost exactly 12 mths ago when I visited a friend in outback Qld. His property had no mobile phone, internet, TV reception...was great and so relaxing. We actually spent the days working together and the nights talking, relaxing with a nice drink...and going hunting for something a little different. Was an awesome experience. However when I finally got back into phone range I had so many missed calls and messages/emails that it took me a couple of hours to get thru them all.Definitely worth trying

I like switching off from technology every now & then, but can only do so for a weekend (due to work need to be contactable during the week). It's even better when I do my regular run away weekends up the Sunny Coast.

Which liner did you take? Going on a cruise has always been on my bucket list. I heard they are not single people friendly though. I was worried about seasickness but it didnt happen. The food of course was excellent and there was way too much of it. And they are definately single friendly........just pick the right type of cruise. I went on the Dawn Pacific and it was wonderful. The drinks were surprisingly at a good price.....and plentiful.   One poor girl got airlifted off the ship. She got caught having sex on the top deck 3 nights in a row so the captain kicked her off. haha

I will look at some P&O cruises ex Perth. I hope to one day visit the Europe or the Bahamas on a cruise.

I must admit the longest I've been without technology is a little embarrassing at only about 6 hours during the day. Driving across the nullabour on my way to kalgoorlie between border village and Norsman. There's no phone service, no radio service, but the scenery was just beautiful. I'd love to do it again some day actually.- Posted from rhpmobile

Yeah but... The youngest is 16.. What can I say.. I started young.. And No one was worried about SDT's then... Mind you.. I reckon (Now) that Parenthood is a pretty serious STD Anyway.. Children all gone their own ways.. doing what God told them to do - "Leave your Parents house.. Cleave as one with a partner.. Go FORTH and Multiply"   Direct Orders from a Commanding Officer Must be obeyed... Failure to do so in battle, is punishable by Death. So: choice is.. fck or die...? Aaaah.. Let me THINK about THAT choice a little.....

I've now discovered why men do the "Disappearing Act"....not only has the dog ate their phone and they've died (Houdini and David Copperfield are very proud of), NOW they've run away from technology....yet they are still able to log onto RHP every hour of every day.... Geeeeze gets better and better!! *grinning* Foxy- Posted from rhpmobile
