Its a very sad state of affairs Being Victorian im on the AFL bandwagon and gotta say from the outset i hate Essendon but i have a couple of friends who barrack for them and they are devasted... from a supporters point of view, i totally sympathise with them.... I guess im terrified the Pies will be on the news tomorrow! Dad worked for the Pies in the late 80's early 90's and is still affiliated in one way or another and as an insider - like you Jay - cant believe its true. Perhaps it is naive to believe that in our beloved state games, drugs play no part - equates to cheating doesnt it? And Aussies dont cheat.... Sickens me.....

I wont be getting exited about it till they come up with something solid about any wrong doeing. PEPTIDES? From my understanding every one on the planet takes or makes peptides every day. Amino acids enzymes Coenzymes Come to think of it every protien is a peptide Till they can come up with something more specifice. Ryan Tandy will be all they have on match fixing.

I think the Australian Government agencies have been spurred into action by the success that the World Anti-Doping Agency's success in their pursuit of Lance Armstrong. As I speculated in the Armstrong thread, that was all for show. They've nailed one offender without effecting the drug culture in cycling in the least. It was reported that the U.S. cycling fraternity did not co-operate with those enquiries. I believe we're seeing the same thing here. The Australian authorities need to be seen to be effective so they're rattling their sabres. I'm sorry, Jay, but drugs are prevalent in just about all professional levels of sport now and again I must insist that the viewing public is as much to blame as anyone else. Spectators expect value for money when they buy their tickets. If they don't see feats of super human strength, they'll lose interest and stop coming back. They want to see the records being consistently broken. In order to perform these feats, athletes must strive to ever greater levels of physical prowess. They cannot achieve these improvements without the assistance of pharmaceuticals. Imagine you are a gifted and talented athlete, competing in a sport that you love. If you found that your opponents were all supplementing their training with performance enhancers, would you give up your beloved sport or would you jump on the bandwagon just to keep playing?

how sad and disheartening it must be for all the people like you who have been and still are involved with eiither of those codes.I am not a fan of any sport ,gee that must be a surprise but strangely my daughter is and coaches a girls AFL team.I am sure as you say,it is just a few people but it just taints it for all the rest. So many young players who are at a time of their lives when they need strong role models, must feel very confused and let down.Just as the fans of cycling have recently been.

Dont be sorry, you're entitled to your opinion. Just like to point out I mentioned my thoughts are 50 / 50. Just like everybody else, I suspect it exists, but just how much we have to wait and see.I know for a fact the coachs and admin at my club follow the NRL guidelines to a tee. Of course this doesnt mean the players do, and we cant keep a eye on them 24/7 , so til proved otherwise every player is guilty and thats what I dont like. The few that spoil it for the rest. I think we're clean.. but I cant be 100% certain. When I played we worked out pretty hard to get through the physical impact on our body every week. We were toned and our physiques up there. But compared to the players these days , it' s cheese and chalk. Its not too hard to pick players who were lean and mean last year , change to buffed and mean after 5 - 6 months of off season. Admittedly, they have the luxury to train everyday where ours was only 3 to 4 days.. and the sports science of today far superior to what we ever had...I just hope it doesn't drag on too long, not fair on the players or the paying public.

So not very informed of the in's and out's of plays and the news headlines on who got caught doing what. But where there is smoke there is fire, you dont get nothing from nothing. Im sure it will be no where as bad a it first all seems to be. There must be something lurking there for them to make such a big deal, hope im wrong as it would be a huge dissapointment to role models of younger kids.

watching abc news and it looks like the NRL are the ones in trouble but I think there are some dodgy things going on in the AFL too... Some of the recovery from injury things have seemed a bit, well... Mike

What bothers me is that the players will be banned, fined, disgraced. Yet the higher ups who have helped them through drug tests, hiding/fudging results won't get caught or their punishments will be minimal and will be free to pervert the next generation of sportsmen and women.

I hear what you're saying, I too was a little taken by the news about the bombers. A team that I've supported since I was a kid. Firstly the salary cap issue and now this. However, just remember while it is disheartening, padlocks only keep honest people out. Reminds me of the times when a few high profile collingwood players hijacked a bus.....

Go out to the exclusive clubs on the weekends and you see the top ranked AFL players with powders up their nose and pipes in their mouthes. They don't hide it!I'm shocked it took this long for something to finally come out about it!
