Easy breathing

January 14 2020

I am upset that our medical associations are not alarming people in regard to air quality and hazardous tiny molecules such as nitrous oxide but especially fine particulate pollution known as PM2.5. These particles measure less than 2.5 micrometers across, can be transported long distances and are extremely dangerous. Breathing in these particles can worsen asthma, lead to heart attack or stroke, but most importantly, research indicate that high levels of PM2.5 are related to neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer’s). On a very clear and non-hazy day, the PM2.5 concentration can be as low as 5 μg/m3 or below. The 24-hour concentration of PM2.5 is considered unhealthy when it rises above 35.4 μg/m3. From my window I even see people jogging outside (Melbourne), others walking without masks completely unaware. Please people get masks with filters, not ordinary masks, only those are safe. If your local pharmacy or Bunnings has none, other them online and do not go out without them. To check your air quality go to epa.vict.gov.au Stay safe (Ms)

Thanks for the warning Ms CatH. I must say I've been walking through the smoke as normal but it can't be good for our bodies

I saw a post this morning that showed the air quality as hazardous. People aren't educated enough to the dangers they're doing to their bodies which I have to spruik makes our fire fighters all the more to be admired considering the risk they put themselves at just being there, never mind the amount of effort they put in. 🍑

DVA are supplying masks for fire smoke to members and I read recently, over 450,000 masks have been distributed by the government, for high-risk members of the public. Ms Foxy

Indeed, people are not educated but also medical professionals are advised not to alarm people, hence, inadequate amount of information has been distributed. Public has the right to know. All I know is that some places do not have enough of them (masks) and summer has just started...and science minister suggests we should all just start adapting to new situations...my advice politicians should start adapting to new - no-vote situation. The thing is adapting to what we have now is the new reality, we have been digging the hole we are in for generations and so a few election cycles isn't going to change that.

I suppose I should add that I don't think we should do nothing, a firm position and some solid policy would be a good start.
