I can't help myself. (Forced myself with left hand over right to full stop them) ahhh bugger it...I type like I talk so the "..." are nearly like inhaling breath before I talk again. I must say I'm a lover of the over use of the" !!!" too. Especially when I'm trying to make a point. I know of a few lovers of the "..." JDEX it's about time you come out of hiding and back me up on this one.See, to me it's about how you use the "..." In the way you have put it Meeka to me you sound as if you'r positivly panting...c'mon girl...fess up?What have you been up to?

Are just a lazy way of accentuating that we are going off on a slightly different tangent. It seems quicker and easier than beginning a new paragrah when it isn't realy. I guess in these technological and extremely busy times that we live in we are constantly looking for ways to reduce the amouint of effort we put into doing something. Similar to text speak.

I like the multiple use of a fullstop. It's much better than a whole lot of white space. And especially good when you're about to give a punchline. Why did the dildo cross the road..........................cos Meeka was on the other side.

It's hardly likely to be caused by anyone individual from here. Fact is, the use of ..... is exceptionally common in all on-line forums. It's a simple way of helping express the intonation and tone of the communique.... I suppose so that it reads more like spoken words... with pauses and all.Plus... people mimic each other subconsciously as this helps express harmony... you can commonly see that face to face watching other people's body language. Two people talking casually in agreement, often assume the same posture.HugsStalky

Dont stop, it's to create emphasis on the written word, something that is difficult as against speech. Then again I can put my foot in my mouth. Lets dot together.........

It's also good for when you are not sure what to say. So you can end a half baked thought with ...... And hope the recipient puts their own personal spin on what you want to say. Although that can be dangerous too. A bit like when you are in the pub and you can not for the life of you hear the other person and you just start to nod in agreement to everything they say. I learnt the hard way. That isn't a good idea. I agreed to what??? LMFAO. Xx Meeka

Yes yes, but I notice that I use the dots when just one full stop would suffice. You know mist of the time there is no dramatic pause. ⊂(◉‿◉)つ

Just came back in here to wallow in my use of the ".........." !!!Whilst I use that as a baited breath kinda thing I use the ">>>>>>>>>>>" To highlight length of something such as " I like you >>>>>>>>>>>>>much"or "I miss you >>>>> much" Basically I think we are just clusterf**king the english grammar for the conformist, purist types out there but meh...I'm not stopping anytime soon! P.S Thanks Chilli!! ( I think it was a compliment lol)

A long pause can give a dramatic effect, if you will. Can make it look like you're actually giving thought to something.

At least not in the middle of a sentence.I think they are designed to be used at the end to indicate there's something unspoken or left to the readers imagination, or occasionally to highlight a poor attempt at a pun or double entendreBut maybe I'm just a little bit anal...Which reminds me - a girl walked into a bar and asked the barman for a double entendre. So he gave her one...

I was taught to write like that when I was at Uni (in the States) ..to emphasis a point in a paper and I guess I still write like that today...didnt even realise I was still doing it till I read this post..apparently I talk the same way...another annoying trait. Sorry if its irritating to read

While I abhor the abuse of the English language through the use of textspeak and abbreviations I don't mind a row of full stops being used to give expression to an otherwise generic piece of text. I don't mind a row of dots to separate sentences as long as they don't go on for long.

Quoting 'MissSarahCurious'It's an ellipsis, not intended to stop anything at all... quite the opposite, actually. Ellipsis (plural ellipses; from the Ancient Greek: ἔλλειψις, élleipsis, "omission" or "falling short") is a series of marks that usually indicate an intentional omission of a word, sentence or whole section from the original text being quoted. An ellipsis can also be used to indicate an unfinished thought or, at the end of a sentence, a trailing off into silence (aposiopesis). It can also be used at the end of a sentence to emphasize a statement. When placed at the beginning or end of a sentence, the ellipsis can also inspire a feeling of melancholy longing. The ellipsis calls for a slight pause in speech or any other form of text, but it is incorrect to use ellipses solely to indicate a pause in speech. The most common form of an ellipsis is a row of three periods or full stops (...) or a pre-composed triple-dot glyph (…). The triple-dot punctuation mark is also called a suspension point, points of ellipsis, periods of ellipsis, or colloquially, dot-dot-dot

It always used to frustrate me when someone indicated an ellipsis with two or four full stops. Same with exclamation marks - one or three please folks, never two!!! I will also accept the super fantastic '!!!!!!!!!!!!!' (!)And by 'used to' I mean 'still does'.

I've typed like for for years....I find it is quicker when responding to numerous work emails and I always type a few full stops instead of hitting the space bar....Someone at work bought it to my attention as I didn't really realise I was doing it...It started a trend at work and I was told by my colleagues it actually does make responding to emails faster......So there you go....Hahaha...Plat

I use them heaps.......signifies a pause or to break up my convoluted drivel. My personal favourite from my son when he reads his reader books is '...' = "dot dot dot, building up the suspense". LOL :)Cass xxx

"Are just a lazy way of accentuating that we are going off on a slightly different tangent. It seems quicker and easier than beginning a new paragrah when it isn't realy"I would think 1x full stop and a capital letter to start the new paragraph would be quicker, and if it isn't really a new paragraph because it is just a slightly tangential sentence (like this sentence)........but it's still in context to the first sentence then a comma would suffice, wouldn't it? That's even quicker.......to me it's a pause and sometimes there is 5 or 7 or 10 depending on how long I hold my breath for if I were saying what I am typing. :) Cass xxx

There is some really early footage of him when he was in possibly his early thirties, not a bad sort, anyway he and his crew were seeking a very primitive Pygmy tribe, walking through the jungle... Then from the hill opposite all these Pygmy warriors came running down towards them with spears at the ready and yelling, David and crew were all gobsmacked... Then with his 'plum in the mouth' accent David offers his hand and says to one of the pygmies "good afternoon..." It was really funny, saw it on TV, and he spoke about it being quite a scary moment in his career, have never been able to find it online but would love to see it again...

So we don't have to punch the full stop 3 times, just for those of you who don't know, technically an ellipses is made up of 3 dots, and 3 only... Not 8 or 15 or 3000.
