Famous but not well known

August 30 2015

Been reading a few posts relating to music, books and film so thought I'd put up a topic. I am always interested to hear, see or read something I am not familiar with so as music plays a huge part in my life I would like to introduce for those who do not know them three artists who are not that well known who I love and most of all admired as people. Richie Havens, folk musician and pure gentleman, recently passed away. Fairly unheard of and sadly only one of his songs appears on the Woodstock album. A sad thing considering he opened the show with a gig that was over two hours long as very few artists made it on time due to traffic problems. Nick Drake, folkish. Died at 26 possible suicide or accidental overdose he was mentally troubled. Haunting music and stunning lyrics plays many alternate tunings and recorded his songs on one track in single sittings, incredible talent . To any fellow bipolar peoples out there his lyrics will speak to you and give you a slap in the face (in a good way) Eva Cassidy, folkish. Died at 33 from a melanoma. Beautiful vocalist and amazing composer. Perfectionist in her recordings and performances. And like the other two artists a beautiful being.

But I'm loving John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band. If you've watched the movie Eddie & The Cruisers and liked the music you'll love this band. They also sang the theme song to Cobra and John Cafferty's solo track Hearts On Fire was featured on Rocky IV. There music has also appeared on soundtracks to There's Something About Mary and Dumb and Dumber To.

I love her music, but didn't know much about her... sad to hear that she died so young. Songbird is one of my forever favourites & never fails to make my heart sing when I hear it. Great topic Tis... I'll be checking out Richie Havens & Nick Drake :)

Purest voice I have heard. Apparently extremely shy, and there wasnt very much of her work recorded. She called herself an interpretator of other peoples music, as she didnt write songs.Had a big gospel influence. After she died and her music was finally being heard, a reporter was interviewing Sting and asked if he could play a cover of Sting's Fields of Gold. Sting says in the interview that he is very territorial of that song, but agrees to listening to it. Eva's rendition brings Sting to tears during the recorded interview. Her cover of Over the rainbow is also beautiful. I often wonder if she would have become reclusive if fame had found her before she died. Another person with a similar tragic end before they were famous was Jeff Buckley. Also died at 33. Then he became famous for his music.

Haven't seen Eddie and the Cruisers for yonks, will check out John Raferty. Sting actually said it was better than his version. Willow bit of a fan of Jeffs dad Tim who died at 28 when you hear him you'll know where his voice came from

Tim buckley's, Greetings from LA album. Amazing how father and son both had an amazing talent, very similar but Jeff only met his father once, when he was 8 yrs old apparently. So it must have been in the genes.

Checked out Sandy Denny such sweet smooth vocals. Love to hear a duet with her and Joni Mitchell as her voice reminded me of that stunning album 'Blue'. I shall be checking out the other ones you have posted. Oh and cheers Freya found a bbc live performance on youtube, not only that it led me to an album I love that I had forgotten about. Yet another stunning vocalist Linda Perhacs. 'Parallelograms' was the album and a very rare gem at that
