Favourite scent on a man?

October 27 2012

Long time reader first time poster! I have sensitive skin which prevents me from wearing aftershave. For the last 15 years every day I have sprayed lynx body spray on my clothes and sometimes on my body in small doses. The thing that I am having an issue with is that every Lynx scent that I like is one of their "limited editions" so I have to buy 10 cans and then in 12 months time when they run out I have to change and try and find another one that I like... And when standing randomly sniffing the cans in Coles today I suddenly thought "I need a woman's perspective on this"!! So please tell me - What is your favourite scent? I don't mind if its aftershave or body spray or anything else but some ideas would be fantastic! Thanks.

Honestly cheap scents from a super market just make me sneeze, too many chemicals.Everyones skin combines differently with the fragrance and chemicals in colognes, prfumes and after shave.I suggest you go into a chemist or department store that sells more expensive brands of cologne, and try a few....take a female friend with you...I personally love the smell of Christian Dior's Eau Sauvage but choose something that suits you and your personality.....and remember, less is more. And there is something very erotic about the smell of freshly showered man naked.x R

Ok I can't go past Obsession by Calvin Klien without practically running my nose up the man's neck- it is such an aphrodisiac to me I cant begin to tell you. Im known to cock my head up on the bus and search for the man that has splashed some on.Alas that does not help you Op. My man is a lynx user and an after shave abuser..hardly ever puts AS on but does the lynx and I do like the limited editions..mind you it doesn't have me diving for his neck hands running over body scenario..its just a "meh you smell good" kind of thing!I like bravehearts suggestion ( well done!)

My sense of smell is probably my most sensitive and receptive sense... mmmm I get all half-dazed with lust on the morning peak hour train, filled with freshly-shaven suited men, the carriage filled with the scent of their cologne and aftershave...Sorry?! Oh right, back on topic. It really does depend on the person - what you pick off a shelf and spray on yourself is not necessarily the same thing that is being smelt by a person you walk past. I used to work with a guy who smelled so delicious my mouth would literally water when he walked by my cubicle. He really wasn't my type and I felt a little perverted asking him - but I summoned up the nerve at his farewell party. He told me he wore a David Beckham scent, but when I went to Myer and tried them all out, none of them matched what I smelled! A combination of your own body odour + deodorant + cologne/aftershave = what everyone else is smelling. Although if you're after preference, I like fresh, cucumber-based scents :)

But I do get a few compliments when I splash on my Le Male by Jean Paul Gaultier. It's not the most original, but as a scent it's unusual for a male cologne because it's quite light and flowery - it doesn't have that musky, sandlewoody kind of body that most others have (which I do also love). I find it great for the Australian climate because it's not so overpowering when you sweat, and surprisingly, lingers quite well when you get up close for the end of the night's adventures. For deodorant I use a roll-on Nivea for Men anti-perspirent. It's got a very faint, non-overpowering odour, so it doesn't really draw attention to itself or conflict with my cologne, which is what I look for in a deodorant. Lynx is a definite no, as is Old Spice. Both have brilliant marketing, but are held back by the fact that they smell utterly rank (to my delicate sensibilities at least!)Of course, sometimes I feel the need for a bit of an edge, so instead of this routine I just rub my armpits with a nice juicy sirloin steak. Depends on the occasion, really.

Love to wear essential oil blends... Some might think it's a bit hippyish, but I was out one evening with a few couples, one of the ladies (an upper class snobby type) said "Wow, someone smells divine?" turns out it was me!!! She was quite surprised when I told her it was not an expensive off the shelf fragrance. Some of the oils also have an aphrodisiac quality, such as a few mentioned by BH.

My sense of smell is a huge emotional trigger for me and I have an incredible sense of smell. Firstly supermarket deodorants are not a scent, it serves a function and should not be considered an aftershave. I hate it when a friend of mine sprays it all over his body as when I'm dragging my tongue across his body it sticks to my rogue like glue and proceeds to leech any sense of taste out of it. Not fun:( Go to a health store any get something with no chemicals that looks after the perspiration subtly. Then purchase some divine aftershave, just do a test first and see how your skin reacts. Love love love Zegna, Hugo Boss and Ralph Lauren silver...Im not into really heavy "woody" scents. Hmm must be the only thing I don't like woody;) Minxy x

shopping for a scent, is that you get so overwhelmed with so many choices and you get sensory overload after a few minutes.I was looking for Gucci Envy for men for myself the other day at DJs and with my acute sense of smell (I can tell what my husband ate for lunch from a kiss), I could only stay for 2 minutes.Freya has it correct when she said the same cologne smells different on different men. Additionally, a scent on a man evokes different reactions from different women. So, there is no one scent that is favourable to all the women you would want to sleep with. Unless, it's from Suskindland. If you find it, share the secret. The world needs a global orgy one of these days.My suggestion? Pick a scent that evokes an emotion or state you want to project. A scent that makes you feel confident. Maybe another one that turns you on. Perhaps amuse_bouche's suggestion of a cucumber-based scent for a sunny day. Or sirloin steak, as neptune_drift suggested to get the vegans going ga-ga over you.

Some are too strong and overpowering so really detracts from the real person, their natural musky odour is fine, but in saying that Channel has a very nice cologne for men it is a blue colour not too strong, Jovan is also nice a musky smell not too strong

I absolutely HATE getting into a vehicle.. or being anywhere near a bloke who covers himself with smelling crap.   I honestly would rather be in a vehicle with a bush abbo then a half high hippy poofta covered in brut, or any other shit they wear.. It burns into my brain.. like wrap and hip hop.. turns me into a axe murderer.. gives me visions or star pickets burried in chests...   *grin*   (folks.. i say this without a single intended bit of disrespect for the sub cultures I have just refered to in colloquial terms)   I want to work with MEN.. I expect them to smell like men.. I eat a diet often nothing but meat.. I sweat and I stink!!! :) but I shower twice daily.. IF there are showers available Men...If you get offended by the smell of a working man.. then get the fck out off my PROJECT :)

What a great topic here.....and fine feedback too from a host of gems.Personally I have 2 to 3 different colognes that I rotate often. This I find it takes the element of predictability out the window and brings in a spice of spontaneity in my own stride and the company that I engage with.So what am I currently using??1. Attitude Extreme by Giorgio Armani2. The Dreamer by Versace3. Bvlgari Man by BvlgariI dab at-least two brands every morning before I get out there. Wrist, neck, arm pits and behind the ears. This stuff is like gold. With all the woody & oriental sensual fragrance mix, I feel so fresh & alive, and quite frankly it draws unusual complements that are beyond seductively inspiring.Attitude Extreme by Giorgio Armani is fantastic for business meetings, networking events and evening wear. Its sophisticated yet sexy. An unforgettable smell.Dreamer by Versace is winner every time for me. it has a romantic feel that develops quietly into a delicious rhythm that's sensually masculine. Like a strong, deep seduction dance that's forceful yet passionate.Bvlgari Man is seriously addictive for my sanity. My boss lady personally pulls me aside endlessly for a nice subtle whiff & whisper........and I truly don't mind the useless 1 on 1 account meetings that she summons me to.Definitely go out and test smell before you buy.:)

Never buy before you try, on your skin and more than once. I've been caught out in my late teens. Spent a good amount of money one a perfume I'd come across. Bought it without hesitation and the first day I wore it it gave me the dreaded perfume headache/nausea.   All scents will take on a different tone on the skin as opposed to the clothing too. I often make sure I spray my clothes and then a spray in my hair too; rarely will it go directly on my skin. Makes a women's decolletage all wrinkly and chemically damaged over time.   Also, purchase an eau de parfum over an eau de toilette too, you use less of it and it lasts longer. Yes, it costs more, but it's worth it if you only have one or two scents in your repertoire. I however have about 15 different scents, all bar one are eau de toilette because they will go "off" over time.

It is great reading all these suggestions and opinions. My thoughts are, it is an often overlooked part of what forms an attraction to the opposite sex. There is nothing better then catching the scent of a woman walking by that just stops you dead in your tracks and letting the mind wander off thinking about slowly undressing her...this is for another topic That being said, from a males point of view my two personal scents that i love and get many regular comments on are, BVALGARI 'AQVA' pour homme, which i mainly use for daytime. It is also unreal on those warm summer nights. I like to wear DOLCE & GABBANA 'THE ONE' for night time and special occasions. These both are fantastic in my opinion and the scents really change and evolve over the duration of the day/night all the while retaining fragrance.

Nice to know a man can take so much time and effort into smelling so good. We certainly notice it believe me. My faves are JPG and Tabac. I am so fussy with my own perfume, hate smelling the same as every other woman. I myself have been known to use LeMale by JPG as a perfume I like it so much. If I am near someone wearing it I seek him out. Have been known to run my nose along a mans cheek if he is wearing it. Guys, just so you all know, cheap brands of after shave and deodorants can be a major turn off. Less is best. Try a non perfumed anti perspirent and go easy on the after shave, we don't spend hundreds of dollars on perfume to be outdone by the male. And my amygDALA knows!

And buy it in a splash rather than a spray. Place hand over bottle opening, tip over then back to upright, the small amount left on the skin over the opening is plenty. Consider rubbing that hand lightly across your hair (avoiding scalp). A friend of mine with long hair and sensitive skin does this, she smells amazing whenever she moves. But remember, best advice ever, as many here have already said: less is more. ONE dab, ONE squirt, ONE light application is guaranteed to work better than too much, and sometimes it's a fine line. I hate being able to taste people's aftershave/ perfume :/ ick. (And I mean when they are at the other end of the room/bus/street!). Personal favourites: JPG (his and hers), clean sweat (you know, after a shower then a light workout, nice), and old spice. Although the Old Spice is one I wear, so maybe a little awkward on others ;)

To the unsuspecting purchaser of a new cologne/parfume, many of you must realise that when you buy a cologne it must be worn to test it, not sprayed on a paper card. Each and everyone of us perspire differently, which in turn, the oils in our skin react differently with the oils and chemicals in a cologne or parfume.   When looking for a new fragrance, the initial scent when sprayed upon the body will play part in your selection, however this is where it ends. If you found that you liked the scent when you sprayed it initially upon yourself, but then you find you cant smell it anymore, this could mean a good thing. At this point you need to check with other people to see if they can still smell the scent on you. If they say that they can, but you can not smell it, ask them what it smells like, and ask them to be honest about it. The reason that a scent disappears once worn, is that it has reacted positively with the oils in your skin, hence... find out what other peoples thoughts are... if their comments are positive towards the way you smell, you have finally found the correct fragrance for you.   Cost of a fragrance doesn't mean anything, you can buy expensive fragrances and find that they still irritate you. From my personal experience and knowledge about this it took me approximately close to trialling 70 different fragrances. Remember... those trials in the shops are free, so utilise them... try and try again... costs you nothing... don't go wasting your money on buying a full bottle that you find that is not right for you. TEST them.   For me, I have found Jean Paul Gaultier works well, can't smell it, but everybody else can. The day that I tried Aramis by Aramis, I almost died (lol) I had bad hayfever for 3 days from the reaction from it.   Take your time in your purchase, your patience will pay-off... and your partner/s will love it.   Good Luck

Mate, straight-up... See a chemist or dermatologist. If u can't find a bio based natural organic enzyme free tree hugging shit... use an oil based moisturiser like the girls said...do that bit before anything. Then maybe a bit of ur choice scent on the collar n cuffs. Whatever it is, it sure as fuck ain't coming off a shelf in isle 13. Asking the babes is excellent. Take a bird with a bit of style with you. IT WILL COST $$$...and get the lady something too..don't make it just about you. Now, something too woody or sweet probably isn't the best choice for ur first bottle. Keep it light and fresh. Try.. Aqua di Gio (armani) CKBE Cool Water (Davidoff) ...classic! Shop around man. Don't let them waifs n spinsters in myer push u into a sale. Take ur sweet-ass time. And be polite when they ask to assist 14 times in 8 minutes...you can get ur revenge at the till when u find the one. Then u squeeze em, or take ur biz elsewhere for best deal. Your perfect perfum should smell like confidence. Not sleaze, or desperate, or old man, or pimp. Just remember success costs money, time and effort. Scents have been round for millennia...and an essential tool when looking to present urself to the ladies. God knows the lengths they go to for you. Respect, manners and confidence, guys..... ... It hasn't been bottled yet. - Posted from rhpmobile

I keep clean, so I don't stink and that's about it.   Although, I do love it when Jennylee's aroma gets into my beard and stays with me all day.

Calvin Klein One. Aqua Di Gio.If you have such sensitive skin, try essential oils. I wear Spiritual Sky oils. They're $8 a vile, and they have no alcohol, so they smell different when put on different skin types. You could also try hair products that smell good to you.On another note, I hate Davidorff's Cool Water. It smells like soap
