Food and health

December 17 2022

I know there are those here that would have a preference for living a vegan/vegetarian lifestyle, whilst I have a preference for vegetarian food I still eat meat/seafood sometimes. I would appreciate it as long as it's a recipe, ingredient, dressing, sauce, etc. if people living a vegan/vegetarian lifestyle here would be ok sharing their recipes and ideas as quite often what people create in the kitchen is better than a recipe book. I really like lemon juice squeezed over a basic salad, a lot of the time it's the simple things in life that work best. I have read articles about the healing properties of food, herbs, liquids, etc. Going back in history the knowledge of these healing properties was well-known and practiced by many. I believe we still have that knowledge within. Something I am going to focus on a lot more is building up my immunity and improving my gut health.

I havent eaten meat for 35 years. I make lots of tasty vegetable dishes, and love sauces and dressings. One of my favourites is chimichurri, a South American condiment. There are lots of recipes online, and you can include chilli if you like. Its green herbs, garlic, red wine vinegar and a splash of oil, its so flavoursome! Good luck in your new health direction.

This is an odd place to be discussing it, but yes, if you listen to your body it will tell you what it needs. We have that knowledge but it tends to go unrecognised due to all the other noise in our lives. I’m basically back to a whole food diet and using food as medicine so I have many recipes I could share but I highly recommend finding your own way, start researching and you’ll naturally gravitate towards your own personal medicines, finding many recipes that can be tweaked to suit your preferences and desired effects. One thing I do recommend to everyone though is lots of ginger, I started taking it 4 years ago for nausea and discovered a surprise side effect is that I don’t get colds anymore, I used to get them all the time. Apparently (according to blood tests) I did have glandular fever at some point but it was nothing for me, I thought I had my first cold since I started taking ginger but it only lasted a week and wasn’t worth going to a dr over. For gut health I take probiotics because I’m too busy to make my own) it’s really easy, rice fermented in water!) and drink distilled water because tap water does all sort of awful stuff to my system, including dehydrating it which doesn’t help the guts any. Good luck, it’s an enlightening journey full of yummy foods and sometimes weird experiences, lol. I’m currently playing with spices and loving some of the warm tingling sensations i get from them at times...just when I thought food couldn’t get any better I learn something new, it’s great, enjoy!

Oh I did wonder how this post would go in here and so far some really interesting responses. From my limited experiences with nutritionists I conclude they really haven’t nailed what works so it’s all highly opinion based. I have always generally tried to eat a healthy balanced diet but have given a more paleo based diet a go and it didn’t really work for me. I switched from this to a strict vegan diet for 4 months and never felt better, was hard to keep up due to family and access foods after moving rural so they slipped to what I call 80% vegan. I find I desire meat less and eat far less although MrsS is such good cook it’s hard to resist but there’s many dishes she now makes vegan that I love more than their meat counterparts. She makes lasagne, spag bol and curries that taste better without meat. I do think our bodies tell us what we need but this can be masked by the addictiveness of some foods especially carbs. In analysing myself I do think if I cut carbs out completely I’d benefit but the stuff is like heroin. Recipe ideas? Should get Mrs S on here as I’m also a better meat cook. She uses heaps of cashews as sauce base/thickener and one of her secret ingredients is falafels, they are a great substitute for mince. Our kids hate onions so she hardly uses them which is interesting as they form the start of a heap of tasty sauces. Vego/vegan stuff seems to taste lighter and you start to really taste the different vegetables a lot more. Also try different versions of things. Something so simple as rice, the difference can be astounding. Popular rice brands are so bland, the right rice will have you satisfied with eating it boiled on its own.

I can't share recipes as I don't really "assemble" anything for cooking much anymore (I'll cook raw foods including all meats etc and I'm very fond of my air fryer). When I was younger and house sharing I had a friend network that were often vegetarian. So then I would make fancier, time consuming stuff like a vegetarian lasagna. Some fresh and frozen food bowls I've found have a very good range of healthy food variety, although they cost more. I'm definitely trying to eat healthier but certainly not all the time. If not healthy, limiting the serving size. Being on the road a lot I have to try and find things like salad rolls to go, or if there's only a pie warmer, perhaps the veggie pastie. So I will choose sometimes vegetarian foods but only to get more fruits and veggies in my diet. I have a visitor couple once or twice a year, and I've made family Xmas lunch a handful of times. On these occasions I know I can do well in the kitchen but normally I'm not motivated to keep up a wide solo cooking skillset.

Just a thought, people always give carbs a bad wrap. You just have to reduce them to match the calories you burn, not cut them out, Rice is an excellent carb as well as potatos. Also I work in aged care and I cannot stress enough how important a small amount of protein is needed for would healing by the elderly, so make sure it is included in some for in your diet. And just one more observation, some vegans bodies tend to store fuel around the midsection and thighs, so please remember vegan/vegetarian is only healthy if you stay within your daily calorie range
