Food for thought! ....

August 12 2013

News item from MSN   "A piranha-like fish known for biting off men's testicles has been caught in European waters for the first time, showing up off the southern coast of Sweden and prompting safety warnings to male swimmers." A 21cm "pacu", which is normally found in the rivers of Brazil's Amazon forest, was caught last week by a fisherman in the Oresund Sound, a strait that separates the Danish island Zealand from Sweden's southern province Scania, The Telegraph reports. "Keep your swimwear on if you're bathing in the Sound these days — maybe there are more out there," Denmark's National History Museum said in a statement. The pacu, a relative of the piranha, can grow up to 90cm and weigh up to 25kg. It is nicknamed the "ball cutter" for its attacks on the male genitalia. In areas where they proliferate, fishermen have reportedly bled to death after losing their testicles to the fish's jaws, which are flatter and stronger that those of piranhas and ideal for crushing. "   OMG .... If I had testicles I think they would have shrunk after reading this!   SF

Have indeed heard of the Pacu! 'Tis a Amazonian fish that lurks around under overhanging nut or berry trees and eats the fruit that falls in the water. It has really really strong jaws (no teeth) a bit like a parrot's beak, which it uses to crush the nuts. To catch a Pacu you actually tie a nut or berry on the hook and toss it out. Apparently they are a great fighting fish for thier size (lots of power). As a result, Guys, me thinks "skinny dipping" in Pacu territory can only end very, very badly indeed! (I would think you would need to have very big nuts to catch a 50 pounder though!)   Obi1

Sorry. No "pirinah-like" teeth (ie sharp ripping teeth). I think the "piranah" reference is just to add some drama to the article, "Oooh,... save me!! ..ball chomping piranah in the water!" although they are related to the flesh eating, carcass stripping piranah we all know and love to see escape (via B-Grade teen movies) into the local swimming pool during prom night or summer vacation. They do however, have very strong, bluntish crushing type chompers or molars (because they really do only eat nuts and berries). They look somewhat like a fat, elongated luderic (blackfish) who eat weed (and yabbies if the water is murky) Me thinks this one was probably a pet that was let go when it got too big (though I thought they were a freshwater fish?). Can't remember the tye of nut they really like, but I would think if one waved one's testicals at a big one, it would have a go!   Obi1

There's been previous reports of these fish in unlikely waters. Can't remember exactly, but I think it may have been a North American lake. Apparently, some people keep them as pets. Presumably, once they've lost a finger (or their balls), they throw in the nearest body of water...

I learnt something new. It is a good change after all the Rudd vs Abbott rubbish in the news. Maybe we can throw the loser into a river filled with Pacu. Hmm...ok, maybe throw the both of them in.
