Grey Haired or Silver Fox?

May 15 2012

This is one for the ladies and the gents.   I was casually reading the RHP article on the new wave of Men's Grooming (http://redhotpie.com.au/Article/Mens-Grooming-the-new-wave-681), when something stuck out at me. It wasn't the fact that we saw this exact same thing happen in the early 2000s with that whole 'metro' cycle (remember Golden Balls Becks?), it was this:   "...the most popular have been waxing and hair colouring... Guys are very conscious of looking their best and are regularly keeping the grey either away or at a reduced level to feel confident."Now I can recognise the value in some of the other services discussed - waxing, shaving, facials, manly manis and power pedis, but the popularity of hair-dying struck me as odd. Baffling in fact!   A bit of disclosure: I got my first grey hairs in my mid-teens. By mid-twenties I was about 1/3 grey. At this rate, all the colour will be gone in a couple of years. And I love it!   To my mind, grey hair in men has strong cultural associations with power. You picture your boardroom executives, your wizened professors, your strong fatherly types (though let's not get too Electric here!) Sure I was frustrated as a teenager that my immediate follicular future was spelt out in shades of black and white, but in my early 20s I very quickly came to appreciate it. Now, I love when people fuss over my hair colour, particularly because it's unexpected.   Only a few people have asked me if I've considered dyeing it, but I am genuinely perplexed by the prospect. Not only does it introduce huge probems with upkeep costs (time and money), regrowth and sometimes just look stupid (remember Hosni Mubarak, former Egyptian autocrat, and his ridiculous octagenarian mane of supposedly jet black hair?), but... why would you want to get rid of it? Grey hair on men rocks!   So questions: Men, have you dyed your grey hairs? Why? How has your hair colour affected your life? Women, do you think less of grey haired chaps? Do you like it?   As two final thoughts: 1. This isn't necessarily a pride thing, nor oblivious self-confidence - I'm as nervous as the next guy about my ever-so-subtley receeding hairline. However, I genuinely think our culture values grey hair in men, and it baffles me that guys would want to give up that advantage. 2. I realise the situation is totally different for the ladies. I can understand it's much more 'unacceptable' for women to have grey hair, but I wish it wasn't! A lovely lady with great skin and long silver locks can look utterly ravishing! More Helen Mirrens and Judi Denches this side of 50 (40) please!   Drift x

Please :) Older, experienced, masculine, sensitive men are a sexy as hell. I love seeing the first hint of greys turn up in man's hair, often in his mid to late 30s. No sure why but is does make me a little weak at the knees. Dark hair with a few grey showing, right through to silver fox. Love it :) And a grey in a man's goatee or five o'clock shadow - also yum! Not that I don't love men without grey, I love men generally!!! But yes, I'm all for a little salt and pepper x

But yes, I'm all for a little salt and pepper x i made the mistake of dying my hair....thinking it would help.... it didnt.... the rest of my body hair was greying too, so it made that more obvious, and it highlighted the fact that my facial hair was greying as well...i had to shave twice a day as a result..........Shels a hairdresser and beautician by trade (as well as ex Hostess and ex model).......so she convinced me to stop coloring...soon after we 'hooked up'....and to grow a beard more recently...she likes the grey, thinks its sexy, and that's all that matters to me.....

One thing that ages us all is grey hair.It is because you aint wrinkley yet Neptune, that it looks good on you,and because it is so unexpected on a young man. Silver is quite a different fish, to dirty yellow,or faded grey/brown,and men who suffer from these shades of "grey" look best with a close crop.Balding heads look best shaved, unless your skull is really uggers, lumps and bumps. However,if a little dye job floats ya boat ,looks good and is not a source of amusement to family and friends,go for it. The toupee on the other hand, will always make me smile.....more than a little....no way toupee,I say.x Hugs H

silver is definitely attractive on a man... my ex was about 1/2 grey and he was only 28 and I LOVED it! My boss at work is 40, full grey but dyeing it and it looks terrible. You can always tell when a guy dyes his hair as the rest of his hair doesn't match the hair on his head and it just looks silly...... so definitely a silver fox for me xx

I would not expect a man my age to NOT have grey hair. If a man wants to dye his hair then I think that is entirely his own decision. I dont min the grey at all.....my man shaves his head bald and that does not bother me either.

"The older I get, the better I was"..... But seriosly.... Mate. I have had the best time, since I started to go grey. Now?....I'm almost there, and loving it. I have a fair ballance between brown, and grey, and the girls LOVE it. BE PROUD OF YOUR LOOKS, and all else will follow. Guys that dye, are sooooooo noticable. Do you want to look proud, or stupid? Confidence is the key to all.
