HIV prevention pill

February 10 2018

Wow! I have got to ask the question...... how do people think this new HIV prevention pill may change the sexy world that we play in? $40 a month and it would seem contracting HIV may be a thing of the past. Will unprotected sex be on the menu? There apparently will be screening required to receive it, which in itself is predicted to massively reduce other STD's as more people receive the screening. Will it change your views? Or is protection more than this? Are we on the verge of a new sexual wave of swinging?

Trials Have been in place for a couple of years in NSW. Lots of guys in the gay sauna arena have participated. I think it has changed the attitude to HIV. Treatments get positive guys down to imperceptible levels, and with prep, raw sex is rampant. It’s like the risk of HIV has diminished tremendously. It was already a low risk... I mean if you’re having receptive anal sex with a poz guy, I think the chances are as low as 5% for contracting HIV. With prep and modern treatments, those chances are more remote... so guys take the risk. You can tell that they do because other STD are on the rise. The clap and the pox as well as clamydia... all on the up... all prevented by condom... so, peeps are going bareback. I’d have to say that HIV is beaten. You can even live with it. However, your personal sex health is still your own responsibility. Hugs Gaz

Wont change my mind. God knows what is in this magic pilll.... Besides it is just a 'prevention' pill and wearing a raincoat, you must still do. To be honest from my own experiences, it not the swinging world to be carefull of, its the ignorant others who think 'it wont happen to me'. I have personally found the swing scene to be the most vigilant on good sexual health. IMO. Good topic to discuss tho. 😊 - Posted from rhpmobile

There’s more than AIDS out there..... so a pill just won’t influence my decision towards condoms As much as one forumite would argue otherwise..... I’ll be wearing them as prevention against the nasties thanks DG - Posted from rhpmobile

Waaaaay back in the day when I was a young digger, we were told of a type of VD carried and passed on by ladies of the night in Asian countries. It was apparently called 'Purple Rose' because it infected your penis, and made your knob bright purple and intensely painful. Then the outer layers of skin started to peel away one after the other, so that it looked like a rose. A purple rose, if you will. *shivers* I have no idea whether it exists or not, but the thought of that made HIV pale in comparison to me. Therefore, the standard still applies - unless in something with a fair degree of commitment, tarping up is mandatory.

Did your mum told you that one to keep you out of trouble on a football trip? When I was a young teen sex Ed involved telling us all about having our piss holes scraped out with a cocktail umbrella to remove the clap! Hugs Gaz

We take vitamins in a pill... We take all sorts of other shit in a pill, why not this too... Never mind any form of personal responsibility... Reaffirms my decision to be celibate I think - Posted from rhpmobile

We are curious with the Prep pill that defeats HIV it is now not possible to get infected with the HIV virus if we elect to take the prep pill while swinging. What STI / STD is out there now that you can catch from unprotected viginal intercourse vs unprotected oral? The Prep pill does offer a highest level of protection out there against of HIV infection plus has the advantage over condom issues of breaking, slipping off. Not suggesting not to wear condoms for intercourse but curious of the risk now oral vs intercourse.

Ok, you've dragged up an old post... but here's what I understand The common stds spread through unprotected vaginal intercourse include, syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomoniasis, mycoplasma. Those are the ones antibiotics can usually cure, although some are becoming resistant. Then there's hpv, that one can cause cervical cancer, rectal cancer and throats cancer. Look up gardisil 9 for the vaccine and info. Then herpesvirus that doesn't have a vaccine or cure. I think hepatitis B is also a problem if you haven't had the vaccine? Which brings us to hiv... yes Prep is quite effective at preventing it if taken daily and it doesn't effect your liver or kidney function. Don't get me wrong it's highly effective if you're in a high risk group or already have a partner that's infected. There are recorded failures and new mutations of the virus to worry about too. Me, I'd rather just slip on a condom👍

SpicyKate,All those problems except HIV can be shared around just as effectively by unprotected oral sex.

HorneyCouple, I wasn't saying they couldn't be passed on through oral at all. If you look at the stats on places like the CDC in the states, they're much less likely to be passed on through oral. A number of the bacterial stds have far worse complications when contracted vaginaly too, including infertility. HPV can cause throat cancer orally, on top of cervical cancer as I've mentioned.... It's not cut and dry at all unfortunately. It's about knowing the risks and being comfortable with the potential consequences. It's also a numbers game, the more partners the greater the risk. If we got too stressed about it we wouldn't be on here. Don't be fooled into believing that if you don't use condoms for oral you might as well not bother for penetration, it just wrong. Not that I'm suggesting that's where you were going with your post.

Also, don't underestimate the potential side effects of taking Prep. I've mentioned in a previous thread that I was on it for a month a number of years ago after a needle stick injury at work. Some people have absolutely zero side effects, for me it meant nausea, insomnia and weird dreams. If you were seeing multiple people a week it might be worth it, but putting a rather strong medication into your system for an occasional romp, probably not. Also, we might be paying the pbs price, but the cost to the taxpayer is horrendous. I don't really see it as ethical if you're not in a high risk group.

Spicey, We are both quoting from the same source. CDC in the USA does not say its less any less likely to catch a STD from oral sex vs viginal sex, they dont know and not willing to make a call on that.

Ok, it's not something I've looked into. Last year the cost to the pbs was about $10000 per person a year. Don't ignore the other potential health issues though, especially for the ladies. I've heard this argument twisted in so many ways over the last few years, I personally don't see the point... but I am very opinionated on this stuff. Prep has to be taken daily to be effective in women, that's a hard ask just so us guys don't need to use condoms occasionally! Guys have the options of taking it on demand, or a week before a party or holiday. For women, they need to be on it for a month prior for it to be effective in the vaginal tissue. As I said before, we all have our opinions on this. As a plan B incase of breakage if you're with multiple people at high risk, either escorting or in the LGBT community is probably the place for it. But that's only my opinion, which I'm guessing might differ from yours and others, that's what makes this place interesting 😊

I stand corrected the non pbs price in Australia has come down to $170 a month since it's come of patent locally. That's a damn site better than where it was sitting when I first read about it!

The purpose of our post was to get feed back from other couples who might be using prep and to highlight the flawed practice of condoms for sex but not for oral.We have decided now Prep is not for us, the on demand appeared to make sense to us ..take 2 tablets 2 -48 hours before sex....4 tablets ea would have cost us $8.00 we did not think that was over the top for the added peace of mind. 'But according to the Australian Aids Foundation it is not recommended for couples that enjoy viginal intercourse only....thats us. The Aus Aids foundation as at 2019 says its for men who have sex men and other people who practice anal sex.Side effects can damage your kidneys.see: https://www.afao.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/AFAO-On-Demand-PrEP-Fact-Sheet.pdf Was worth a look at but not for us.
