Healthy eating

June 16 2014

Its not easy this day and age to have a healthy eating habit with all the temptations through advertising and the sweet smell of a hot jam donut at a market becomes to tempting. But do you yourself have a healthy eating lifestyle? if you're partnered do you? have there been any struggles as in a life of poor eating and then a transition over to a good diet? the rise of type 2 diabetics concerns me not just in adults but children, kids as young as 8 are developing type 2. Another is have you tried those diet plans and meal replacement products? do they work? Whats a common issue you have with a healthy diet, motivation? support? If you have turned to a healthy diet what has been some of the benefits of this? personally I eat really well, lowered my portion size, less alcohol (this is a major issue in health) I don't smoke or do drugs. Yet I am active feel great and have a really healthy sex drive, I found a poor diet, alcohol and no activity really drained my motivation in any aspects of my life. Id like to hear from those who do have a healthy lifestyle, do you feel you go to far? has it affected relationships? have you dumped someone because of it? I guess the major question is, do you know a healthy lifestyle? is life to busy to have it? does family make it difficult? work?Ive have made plenty of excuses in my time but with work and Uni, family life it all becomes a bit much and stressful but if you work hard you can make it happen. I think a lot of people just become lazy and "set in their ways" when it comes to their lives. Im interested in peoples views on this

Anything with sweets and ice cream I can eat every day! Sadly my current healthy eating plan diet is all over the place, due to the fact I live by myself. I eat what ever I want, went I want and whom I want. When I was married and during that time, I cooked, baked, followed recipes etc etc. had all the kitchen latest kitchen pro equipment appliances, you name it I had it. Now I dislike cooking now..actually I despise it! As part of my bucket list I look for some one who can cook as their is a vacancy in my kitchen. :) I promise I'll bend over and stack the dishwasher.........wearing nothing but an apron...or not? Sadly I'm one of those lazy people and set in their ways. Due to my current lifestyle and working long hours, eating meals for me on the run is perfect. I dislike frozen meals...yuck! Actually yesterday I said to a friend, I could just go a huge freshly cooked bowl of Chinese steamed vegetables...mmmmmmmmm! Foxy

As a worker who starts before the sun comes up and gets to finish mid afternoon, I guess I am blessed as I feel I have more time than someone who works the normal nine to five. Plus being single with no kids frees up a lot of time for me too to be able to cook home cooked meals which offer better nutrition than say a take away meal. I do find however, that I pre cook my meals for the week and store them in containers in the freezer....it's great for when I get home or even to pack as lunch. I find this saves time as well during the week. I try to choose meals which are easy to cook too. I like Jamie Oliver's quick and easy meals and some from Men's Health magazines etc. it takes a bit of effort of course but yeh the rewards are worth it. Also I would just like to say that people with jobs with extended hours, huge responsibilities and single mothers....and if there is another category of busy people....I say you guys are awesome. Time is precious.

Ummm I've had no issues personally with my diet in regards to relationships. As a man who can eat anything for example gluten products etc.... I do remember seeing a lady who could only eat gluten free. When I got home I cooked her spaghetti bolognaise and she couldn't eat it because I forgot she was gluten intolerant...argh. So yeh I guess in saying that it has had an effect on my relationships. Ummmm I do find going on trips like long drives, I like to pack a handy lunch or else if I get hungry I might turn into Alf Stewart and stone the flamin crows.....I do take supplements as I train and I find it easy to lose weight...way too easy. Sorry ladies. So yeh I take a carb and protein supplemnts to sustain me for my work and training.

. The way Coles is set out, the fresh fruit, veggies and meat is shopped for first..... That is my forte, I cook from scratch, everything fresh, nothing from jars or packets..... Then hubby starts to add his 'items', jars of sauces, pre made food, ice-cream, chocolate etc, etc......... I was trying to convince hubby that we had most of the ingredients to make all his stuff fresh....... I completely lost it when he slipped in a pre marinated lemon garlic chicken and I just started reading out the delicious ingredients it had been packed with, passed it to the checkout lady and promptly ordered him to go and get me three lemons, a bulb of garlic and a chicken grrrrr

Our bodies are not designed to process all these artificial chemicals. I believe this is one of the causes for our unhealthy bodies and minds........ Go back to basics, keep it simple...... Darn, I could really go on about this topic, maybe in should just follow it for a bit!!

We are inundated with advertising and mixed messages, our newspaper and magazines lifestyle sections are full of fad advice, plastic surgery and is marketed towards people who want a quick fix and convienience. Australia's obesity problem grew with the release of diet, low fat products and sugar replacements. Why? Because we got lazy and believed the propaganda. Some products actually make you crave more and have no nutritional value at all and can cause dehydration. There are studies at the moment which are revealing a link between early dementia and sugar replacements. I'm in the process of auditing our systems at work, we support individuals to live independantly and I am disgusted by the amount of processed, high sodium, carbohydrate based meals that are being planned. There is very little fresh food, protein, omega's and iron. People are on medication due to low iron levels and high cholesterol, both can be combatted with good food, including legumes, high blood pressure meds due to the amount of processed meats and of course type 2 diabetes. Where is the education? I'm guilty of the quick meal on the run, I'm a shiftworker, mother of three and just damn busy most of the time, but I do try my best to feed my family and clients good wholesome food for at least 5/7 days a week, encourage an active lifestyle and promote activities which are good for the soul.

I approach my healthy lifestyle with a more holistic approach. I eat healthy, avoid junk food (pizza once a month when i have my teenage boys) and I cook from scratch. I have a high fibre and low sugar diet mainly just lots of vegies (stirfries and salads), tofu and some meat. so I follow a simple low GI diet. Love my occasional grilled steak. Thank goodness I love cooking specially gourmet food. I avoid dessert, eating fruits instead. Easy as I do not have a sweet tooth so chocolate blocks and boxes of Lindt would sit untouched for months. Lol. I would have rice but not heavy on carbs like pasta, corn or potatoes. I have a weakness for very good gelati (not in cooler months) and Aldi's Tripple choc mudcake icecream. Lol. I do not count calories as can't be bothered, just plain boring and I have a low attention span for that sort of thing. I occasionally have alcohol with meal (good cab sav) but avoid alcohol altogether. Although I love my mojitos and G&T when I go out. I do a lot of exercise to make up my indulgence and for general fitness. Again, a healthy well balanced approach to exercise. 2-3x per week of boxing and Muay Thai (Thai kickboxing) for 1-1.5hours per session. Good sweat session. On recovery days, I would go to the gym (2-3 per week after work) and hit the machines and do cardio and some weights for 45mins to 1 hour. I am not skinny nor am I overweight. I need the muscle and strength to keep up with the demands of my sports. I have just started yoga for the meditative benefits. so all up, a balanced approach. Have tried those meal replacement but never good to go on it long term. Prefer fresh real food.

As an adult...... there is only one person who is ultimately responsible for the foods are placed into your mouth. Sure... education can assist..... but seriously.... you dont need much of an education to know which foods are basically "healthy", and which arent. 2c

Quoting 'lilyorchid' "I eat healthy, avoid junk food (pizza once a month when i have my teenage boys)" BTW I have my teenage boys every other week (not once a month) so the meals planned for the week with them will have more tummy filling carbs (like pasta, noodles and potatoes). Hey, they are growing boys, highly active and have bottomless stomachs. I wonder sometimes if they have a secret worm farm stashed in their tummies. Lol. Overall, I have exposed my boys to healthy eating and gourmet food. Just giving them a good education in nutrition, good eating habits and a good start in life. My best gift to them.

I eat seafood, but no meat. However I cook meat for my son, and we make meals from scratch most of the time. But I like the 80 - 20 rule, 80% healthy food, 20% treats. That way you are not depriving yourself of ice cream, chocolate, hot chips or whatever your weakness may be. Obviously the numbers are a rough percentage, but I love fresh food, and cant see the attraction of some of those fast ready meals, especially the one with dried pasta and a pink coloured powder you mix with hot water....??? Easy, yes, nutritious and tasty, not for me.

I'm with Foxy on this. I leave for work early in the morning, eat fruit and yoghurt for mid morning, usually a good lunch but alternate weeks when I don't have my son dinner is usually Tim Tams and coffee, or if I'm feeling really industrious a piece of smoked salmon wrapped around some cheese. Oh, how I love being single

Been a prepackaged eater, but it was only 2years ago I watched someone make gravy without it being labeled gravox !! Like Leo, I cook up a big batches from scratch and freeze portions, currys, skippy con carne etc. I've been listening to "the good drs" podcasts lately, and while I'm a little skeptical of some of their guests, I believe in trying to eat as little processed food as possible... try to eat whole foods. I always choose the products with the least "numbers" listed as ingredients. I'm trying to eat the sort of foods that granny and grandpa grew up with, natural and unprocessed, as opposed to plastic and full of chemicals... But in the end it's a moderation thing I'm looking at... After all, the latest health news is often overturned within a few years... Remember when eggs were the "killer food" "cholesterol bombs" ? Hp xo💋 Because you're worth it...

and I've seen so many lovelies destroy their bodies with bad eating habits, extreme exercise, laxative diets etc etc and they have massive hang-ups about their body and the image they are projecting. A few years ago I made a conscious decision that I would not work with anyone that I judged to have a very obvious physical ailment brought about through extreme dieting/exercise or a possible eating condition. This decision cost me work and many assignments however I do not regret this decision . For my work I don't want beauty, I want a healthy projection and I'm proud that I've never waivered from that decision. The people I work with appear to follow good eating plans and have a healthy out look towards their diets and exercise and that reflects in the work I do As for myself. I am tall and voluptuous and also missing a thyroid so if I don't work out I'm prone to putting on weight, so I avoid carbs at all cost. A carb has not passed my lips in years. I never skip brekkie as I do believe it is the most important meal of the day. Fresh fruit, yoghurt, glass of milk .Lunch is always soup and salad and dinner meat, seafood and vegies. I'm on my feet most of the day so I snack on nuts, fruit and popcorn. Because I don't have a thyroid I have to really watch my diet. I don't drink, smoke, do drugs or drink coffee or tea. I used to be a professional dancer, so I still dance for exercise and do Pilates and yoga, I swim and lift weights but the whole running thing does my head in. In the last few years I've taken to meditation and I meditate twice a day morning and night, never miss it now, clears the head and quietens the soul If I deviate from the above regime, I pay for it by feeling sick, sluggish and off and all out of kilter. So life is easier for me if I don't. Meal replacements I believe have their place for some people but not for me, I believe there are many options available to you that includes actually eating food and therefore you can like have a life but having said that I know of someone ( a guy) who lost a lot of weight by using them regularly and completing changing his lifestyle and his kept the weight off so far (3 years I think), so each to their own My vices: Chocorn and bad men - very bad men.

As with everything else, we all have different metabolisms, and due to this, there are people who can eat basically whatever they like and never put on an ounce. Others (like me) smell food and put on a kilo just thinking about it... I found this out very early in life and had to train myself... When I played footy, I had no problem as I burnt off the barbs and sugar and I was fit. Always solid and muscular (which, believe gentlemen is NO blessing). When playing and performing on stage, the energy involved was the same as 3 games of footy. Now as I am older, the old bod tells me it's not a 'spry' as it once was, so I have to make sure I exercise (for strength) and go easy on the carbs and sugar (to keep the weight off. Other than that, I'm fortunate enough to know enough about nutrition, metabolism and MY body to know what I can do and can't (as far as eating goes...). The biggest adjustment and hardest thing to maintain is to deny the things that MY body cries out for... bread, potato, pasta and all the other high carb foods. They're the ones that will have me looking like the side of a barn if I'm not careful... And of course, I'm cursed with a sweet tooth, so sugar is also something I battle every day. These of course, are all things I've learnt over the last 10 years that I can't eat in any great quantity... But, than God, it does become habit and I don't have a lot of trouble avoiding such things. I just have to remind myself of how hard it is to get fit again. Hopefully most men don't have to worry till they get to late 40's or so... but alas, ladies tend to have to start the serious battle earlier, due to our hormones being different and having varying effects when at low levels. I find that a supplement called 'GenF20 Plus', which is marketed as an anti aging supplement, but it is really a bunch of chemicals that come together to help manufacture and release 'testosterone and HGH (Human Growth Hormone) in a natural way, using the pituitary gland and testes. It's safe and tested and work well to fight the bulge and also replace the hormones that effect the way our bodies (men's) lose the required chemicals as time goes on. There you go... that's how I do it... and I find I have the stamina and libido of when I was say... 30 - 35. It would be too much to hope for 20's, but I'm happy with that. I wouldn't want to over do it, now would I... Ta

I have a sweet tooth and a tendency to over indulge, a fatal combination. A love of red wine and good quality beer adds to the danger. Recently, well late last year, I packed on some padding, and started to nudge the scales to unhealthy regions and went up a size in clothing. A slowing metabolism doesn't help either! So, rather than dieting (which is unsustainable long term) or an unrealistic exercise regime, I embarked on the Mosely 5 - 2 eating plan. Yes, an eating plan not a diet. You basically "fast" for two non consecutive days each week. Not true fasting but a fairly severe calorie restriction on those days. The other 5 days I'm free to eat chocolate and drink red wine! It is loosely based on the premise that the cave man hunter gatherer would be similarly restricted after killing and feasting on the wooly mammoth until the next kill. And guess what? A 15 kg weight loss and former clothes sizes now feeling loose. Happy hunter! Look it up, give it a try.....and remember, all things in moderation, except when they feel good!!!

The idea is that, for two years you receive healthy living mentoring and monitoring, as well as T4 or placebo supplementation. My blood tests came back.... I'm too healthy to participate. In any case, it is often said that we ought consume anything in moderation... and free range, fresh, unprocessed foods and drunks are best.... I love good clean healthy eating but I carry extra weight. It's so frustratring. My body just can't handle carbs or dairy. I like milk but not the lactose free. Milk just doesn't like me. When I say carbs I refer to bread, pasta etc. I do my best to stay away but a moment on the lips forever on the hips. I'm guilty for not exercising enough but I do already exercise plenty. I need daily not every second day and I know I have excuses but my day is so full on as a single mum and then I'm tired. I keep promising myself that I come first before everything else and to schedule it in but then guilt sets in. As a single mum though and attempting to date, well thats downright difficult. Im attracted to fit bodies, I truly did have one once. But many fit men want fit women. No bumps allowed. They expect you to be able to go to the gym nearly every day of the week and play sport or run. Yeah!! I'd love to, but what about the kids and everythinh else I'm expected to do as a single parent..I'm often getting something quick for dinner. Thank gawd for the humble egg, without eggs, mushroom, tomato, onion and baby spinach I couldn't rustle up our omellets. - Posted from rhpmobile

No, it shouldn't. Some lentils or split peas, carrot, onion and celery and you have a big pot of soup that will last two days, and back home "second day soup" was always tastier. A packet of pasta for a dollar from Coles, some fresh toms, onion, garlic, dried herbs, which are in most peoples larders, and theres dinner. There are many, many ways to provide cheap and healthy meals; I always go to the markets for fruit and veg. Im sure we could start an economic and healthy recipe thread.....

My appetite/eating habbits have always been a source jealousy/disbelief among friends & family & would certainly horrify most here. The excessive quantity, sometimes poor quality(for convenience) & the fact that I never put on any body fat.I can eat fast food upto 3 or more times a day, constantly bbq(even through the night if i'm tempted enough), usually eat 7 meals a day, constantly snack, never look at labels, make no effort to shop healthy. I buy whatever looks good/what I feel like cooking. I remember when the Airport woolies opened last year, I went through over 5kg of bacon, 3.5kg worth of steak and cant remember the amount of smoked salmon & prawns in just the first 6-7 days. I looove to eat. To give you an idea I dont drink, don't smoke & have never taken a drug in my life, I do however have a slight caffeine addiction in the form of coke which I am looking into taking care of. I was well known for sitting on cam in the old CI chat room constantly eating maccas, hj's, pizza, kfc....etc sometimes 2 of them. It even became a guessing game at one point of what crap id be eating on any particular night. lol I am also fairly active with sport & play my chosen sport at a state level, last weigh in with PT I was measured at 6.2% body fat. I've added it up over the years I eat a lot more than any of my larger-obese friends including constant sugar & saturated fats. Theyve been telling me for years i'll balloon, first at 20, then 25 now it's 30. lol I'm in no way condoning or recommending this(or claiming to be healthy, I acknowledge that my insides are probably black lol) but I thought i'd add my freak metabolism to the discussion.

Case in point when kids were younger and I was recently seperated had very very limited money I made very different choices because the choices were limited, we actually ate extremely well and healthy. Fast forward a few years earning more money kids are teenagers I work longer hours i now make bad choices with food. So yep for me money makes a difference but probably not on the way that you would expect. - Posted from rhpmobile
