They asked, "What's that?" I told them, "Hedonism is the belief that the purpose of life is the pursuit of happiness." The women insisted, "Well, that's Jesus Christ." I replied, "No! That's Harley Davidson." (True story). A pure hedonist indulges their every desire and whim, with no regard for consequence. Utilitarianism is a school of philosophy, that evolved from hedonism, which believes in behaviour that brings about happiness for the majority of people. I like the Wiccan Rede which says, "An' it harm none, do as ye will." So, as long as you're conscious of consequence, ...go for it.

the pursuit of pleasure as the ''chief good or proper aim'' is the meaning in my Shorter Oxford.Personally I think life is about balance. The pursuit of pleasure for pleasures sake has it's place. If we pursue pleasure to the exclusion of all else and others interests, then that is selfishness. Even if we choose not to harm others with intention ,we would unintentionally commit harm. I believe that we have a responsibility to ourselves and others and that it is the pursuit of happiness that provides meaning to our lives. In pursuing happiness the interest of others is in fact I believe, often the best form of self interest. Great post btw.Halcyon

The ancient Egyptians believed that if and when you died, if one person truly mourned your passing, that if you had touched their lives in some way...........then you would find eternal happiness, in the land that laid beyond....that you mission whilt here was to make a difference to others... Hedonism..the pursuit of happiness.........then, one in order to pursue must first define what is happiness and for each and everyone of us, that definition will be different We born, we live and we die...but its the bit in between that defines us and how we will be viewed...... or we can go the Big Bang theory of happiness....... Sheldons idea of happiness: Episode 14 Season 3 Is to view his work as a fleeting periphal image to engage the superior colliculus of his brain !!!! Maybe its that simple....that is...... being happy within ourselves despite our circumstances and limitations and our duty of care is to make a difference, no matter how small to each other but more importantly within ourselves..

i agree with you freya...i think that balance is esential....its a shame we live in a greed based materialistic world where people are judged in monetary standards as to how well they have done in life...hence creating selfishness...i think hedonism could work in a society where we are freed from those restraints...and hey its proven when you are happy you live longer and are generally healthier...

I'm saying that I think hedonism is justifiable when you adopt the view that life has no intrinsic meaning or purpose. While I do adopt that view and I do think hedonism is therefore justifiable, I lean towards altruism instead. It's a choice, nothing more or less :)

Jensman is correct I believe when he defines both hedonism and utilitarianism. My work so often is about the greater good if you view it philosophically, so when it comes to my personal life I admit I am a little selfish. I like to pursue pleasure, sensation and passion. To explore different things and find out if they are pleasurable. But like the Wiccan code or the Hippocratic oath, do no harm forms a sort of circuit breaker for me. The potential harm must be weighed. So it doesn't matter if I want to pursue someone or something, if it will end up doing harm then it becomes something that I personally cannot pursue. I follow polonius' advice to his son going to university "this above all else, to thine own self be true" of course if a person were a sociopath or a narcissist, this advice could be devastating but thankfully I am neither. In following my little exploration of hedonism, I find that honesty often saves me from blindly hurting someone unintentionally. I used to have this as a sig for posts a bit, but it is still true today...."honesty! Not helping me get laid but it sure helps when you look in the mirror!"

Halcyon, short term at least, women do not seem to want honesty. Perhaps in the longer term they do, but initially they seem to want to be told whatever it is they want to hear. That's why it was my sig for a bit. One it gave me a laugh and two, it is very very true.

We need to share a bottle of red. Ive stopped and started reread and re rwitten for the past half hour on this topic. Too many permutations of responces that can come. Beware it will go into string theory on the second bottle. Sorry Halcyon, its a topic that provokes mees writing a minor essay as to my beliefs in the favour of hedonism with social resposability.

Quoting 'EuropianBliss' Sorry Halcyon, its a topic that provokes mees writing a minor essay as to my beliefs in the favour of hedonism with social resposability.Hedonism with social responsibility, what a great idea! I have a reasonable grasp of string theory (on some days, when my brain is firing properly), and I have some strong beliefs re all life being simply a matter of energy exchange. So ... no need to apologise ;)

Little as it is... I'd like to think that I left no rings on the toilet bowl of life. Even in public toilets that I may have forgotten.I like to think no one will be saying "Thank fuck he's carked it" because of something I did or said. People are entitled to think that of course. I'd just prefer they thought it because they were mistaken about me.So within that constraint, I'm here to feel good. To share good feelings with other people. To spend a little quiet time (sometimes tricky for me). To create things that give me a sense of well being. And to occasionally play guitar very loud!!

...at least not in my case. I know for certain that there are those who look forward to seeing me cark it.
