You are gaining life experience by watching movies. Like so many other things in life listen to your heart not the judgements others throw at you.

I'm not as big a buff as I was. Movies have always been about escapism to me but, all the same, they are too unrealistic for me these days. I expect it's always been the same, my kids look at the movies I like and think them tame but I'll always prefer the classics.

and I wonder if he'll post in this thread. He is one of the most educated and intelligent men I know and he's under 30! I don't know how much of that he can attribute to watching films, but I know I personally take/learn lots from films when I pay close enough attention.   If you enjoy watching films in your spare time and you still get out and enjoy real life too, then where's the harm in that?!

Is a book called 1001 Movies to Watch Before You Die. My movie bucket list if you will. I have no idea how I'll get to see the ones that were made in 1922 etc, but I'll certainly try. I have to say though, there are movies listed that I wouldn't watch in a pink fit, let alone a lucid moment. You go for it Nathan41, you can have a life and still enjoy the marvels of the cinema. Look what people like Bill Collins have done, he made a very successful career out of his love of this art form.I'm with you, now pass the Maltesers please.Viking

are a passion for me...I love the whole cinema experience, immersing myself in another time and place.I have very broad tastes ,just yesterday I saw Savages, the new Oliver Stone film and I thought it was brilliant. I love films set in locations that I have actually been to, so any film set in Paris has me there.Midnight in Paris combined so many likes for me,la Belle Epoch, twenties Paris, all the writers and artists at Gertrude Steins salon, bliss to be able to just fall into that movie Nathan don't let anyone dissuade you from this passion ,movies are not just entertaining they can also be life affirming and inspiring.

...'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' was on tele the other night. To me, it still feels fairly recent that it came out but those fashions (holy snappin' duck shit) and seeing Charlie Sheen as a sixteen year old (even though he as twenty one at the time), ...it really hits home hard the fact that I'm an old fart. One thing that makes me feel better about aging though, was the parade scene and 'Twist And Shout'. This film as made in 1986 and the Beatles recorded 'Twist And Shout' in 1963 (the year of my birth) as a cover version of a song written a couple of years earlier and it still has the same infectious impact today as it did then (in 1963) and again then (in 1986). Don't know what the point of 'Danke Schoen' was though.

The short answer is yes! And in a bit more complex way than just listing 'movies' as an interest. I will say that I've seen each film on my top ten movie list several dozen times each. Me and Hollywood ain't done yet! That said, I agree with GoldCoastCouple to an extent - in my opinion movies are currently undergoing an identity crisis as premium cable is emerging as the premiere quality storytelling format for the modern age. How can a story where you have to cram in character, plot, and conclusion into 2.5 hours ever hope to match the complexity of a format where that can be layered over 12 hours or more? Cinema's got the spectacle, television's increasingly got the story. Interesting times...

About a year or so ago, I co-wrote a book with a friend called " 100 Movies To See... Before I Kill You" and up until my laptip was nicked, I had already two sequels. Now I have to re-write my halves, which I'm quite disheartened with, even if it is a tax-write off between mates. The sequels were to be titled " A Cinematic History of Violence" and "100 Movies to see Before I Eat You!"   Movies are great, don't get me wrong, I know I can making a living out of watching movies, if not for the skint royalties and the publishing rights and a lot of other legal mumbo jumbo I won't go into, suffice to say that I know a lot about movies from an academic standpoint, and I have probably sat through countless thousands to such a point where it is no longer an enjoyable activity.   I like some pretty off the wall stuff i.e Taxi Driver, Vixen, Hobo with a Shotgun, Dead Calm and Velvet Goldmine, films that with exception to Taxi Driver I'm sure very few peoiple have ever heard of. Blood Sucking Freaks, The Ghost & The Darkness, The Rules of Attraction, Tbe Libertine and The Wrestler... I mean I like film as a medium, though I think its gone as far as it can go. Hollywood is haemhorraging ideas and having to fall back on remakes and novels, which is really ironic when you think about it.   Shutter Island, Fight Club, Choke, the remake of The Great Gatsby, The Rum Diaries, Mr. Nice... the list goes on. The Help, Chopper, American Psycho.... Full Metal Jacket, Clockwork Orange, Lolita... all great novels and some even made for alright film fodder, Jurassic Park, 1984, V for Vendetta, Watchmen, The Da Vinci Code, The Chamberlain Case and Evil Angels just to name a few more. Hollwyood can't survive its own self-cannibalization, particularly when the average cost of a cinema ticket these days is what? $17 plus snacks? You could almost buy the DVD for that.   Personally I find it nothing short of ironic that I'm actually co-authoring three books on film. Because in my estimation, nobody reads these days. In other news, please buy "100 Movies To See... Before I Kill You!" because I really want the sales. Its not as subtle as that shower scene from Psycho, or as memorable as that scene from Basic Instinct where Sharon Stone opens her legs, but hey... you can't blame a cinephile for trying... can ya, punk?

Here's lookin at you honeybee... are you talkin to me? And there I was, and I thought to myself, cows are trying to kill me, bisexuals are trying to kill me, this is my post. there are many like it but this one is mine. without emotion breath is just a clock. I exist to continue my existence. Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The shadow knows....   In all seriousnes though, people are strange when you're a stranger. Are the lambs still screaming? This stunt of your has boomeranged on us. I quite like this god character, he's just so deliciously evil. True romance at first sight?   I was honestly thinking of writing an entire profile around movie quotes. Would that be inventive or is milk a bad choice? Stay classy rhPeeps. I'm Nick Wilde and I'm excellennt, dude. Why so serious?   And you open the door and you step inside, and the director yells... CUT!

And how very droll. Turns out the light at the end of the tunnel actually was an oncoming train. Somehow, this thread makes simultaneously more and less sense.   So much for subtlety, mood lighting and atmosphere. This place gets weirder and weirder I must say. At least back on plan 9, you knew how deep the rabbit hole went. Here, even moral compasses appear a dime a dozen.   Talk about a sucker punch. Excuse me while I go and hack off my own ears to get out of H-division.
