It's unhealthy and it stinks.

November 02 2014

Cigarette smoking is now a minority activity. This thread is inspired by some recent comments about ciggies visible in a profile photo.Australia is very proactive about stopping people from smoking, what was once a social norm is now an unpopular pass time. I am not a smoking fan but do have reservations about a wheel can turn, my step father and many others, started smoking Government issued cigarettes, in WW2, some of these people have lived long enough to see the Government legislate against smoking.I have a question for the ex-smokers here regarding your motivation to stop smoking? How did you become an ex-smoker? How easy or hard was it? How do you feel about others smoking now? Do you have any other comments to make on this subject.Mrs Denials sent me off to do the National Heart Foundation Quit program. Unfortunately they don't run that program any more, it was great and it educated me enough to know I should give up as well as inspiring me to WANT to give up. In a short period of time I went from a heavily addicted smoker to a non smoker, it was surprisingly easy to give up in the end. As the old joke goes...Giving up's easy I've done it hundreds of times

I have been trying to quit on and off for about 5 or 6 weeks now. I tried cold turkey, the gum, sprays, just about everything. Every time I got to day 5 or 6 I failed. I eventually went to my doctor and got him to prescribe Champix. It does seem to be working, so far so good . I think this is the calmest I have been about it. A warning though, it can have side effects, I had terrible mood swings the first few days (some might say I'm still having them) but at least I didn't develop a third boob or something. :-PAlso listening to Allen Carr's Easyway to stop almost daily is a huge motivation. My reasons : My health, for my children's sake and of course the cost!! Congratulations on your quit JD, protect it at all cost

As a child of a parent who was a heavy smoker I used to hate the smell and how it used to make me feel sick. Back in those days, like you say, smokling was the norm. Being in a confined space, eg. car with all the windows up, with a smoker, was a regular but dreaded daily occurence. I used to hide my father's ciggies or "accidently" snap them in two when i had the chance. I used to get into so much trouble over this but I hated his smoking more than the consequences of my actions. After a friend of his died from lung cancer attributed to smoking he went cold turkey. That was over 35 years ago. He now has the same feeling of revoltion and moves away from anyone smoking as it now makes him feel sick to inhale others second hand smoke. In high school, during health ed classes we were shown a very graphic documentary showing dissected lungs of a deceased heavy smoker filled with black tar like substance ouzing out compared to the clear pink lungs of a deceased non-smoker. It was very disturbing and I will never forget it. Congratulations to anyone who has given up or is trying to give up the habit.

but I went all out to make sure I got it done in one go. I used champix I had my mum here 24/7 and I did hypnosis. Which comes with a lifetime guarantee, I walked out of that office finding it hard to believe I was ever a smoker! I was a heavy smoker almost a pack a day and have a strong family history of head and neck cancer from smoking. my mum smoked when we were kids, in the house in the car everywhere. She smoked right up until her surgery when she was 37 and she became a full laryngectomy. For those that don't know that's the full removal of the larynx and separation of the airway from the mouth, nose and esophagus. The laryngectomee breathes through an opening in the neck her father also was a heavy smoker and had tongue and throat cancer, he was also in Hiroshima as part of the rebuilding and clean up after they dropped the bomb. so why did I give up, I had a lump under my tongue and needed surgery to remove it. for me I would say giving up was easy because I never thought about it again. I am not phased at all being around smokers, I have no desire to partake and really do hate the smell but mostly I just feel sorry for them as they are still doing it 😔

i kick myself for smoking for so long, filthy fucken habit every thing about it is a disgrace from an individuals percieved addiction ! The shops , servo , local store , supermarkets for taking part in its distribution , of course the fat filthy rich companies that manufacture death so innocently concealed with lies and deciet and ignorance, but exposed for all to see the pathetic cowardess pleading to purchase there soul from the very skum that are at the top of the chain ?? Our own elected self-righteous government of greed, hypocrisy and betrayal of the trust gifted in you from your own people . You Shall Be Judged !!!!!! Anyhow lets focus on STOP SMOKING For me was the habit not nicotine ! To stop my habit of added smoke "drawing in and blowing out." It is medical fact that breathing in and out is a form of relaxation , calming , stress release , panic attacks , anxiety are eased and under control when calm consistent proper breathing techniques maintained . The trick is eradicating the perceived need for smoke from cigarette . So personally ok i must stop smoking cigarettes !!! How ? Replace the cigarette with disposable battery vapour (non nicotine replica ) This is to be used when the craving period for your habit is to strong to resist ! So do not resist it go out to your normal routine in a smoking area for example and relax calm down in the fact your smoking :-) breath in and out thats it , it will not take long you will be calm and over your so called cig break . One vapour replica disposable cig is equivalent to one packet of dirty cigs . I purchased 3 for roughly $ 40 1 .The first replica lasted me one week as it replaced the action of smoking 2. The second replica lasted me over two weeks as my need or habit or action to smoke became very short and unnecessary. 3 . The third replica i never finished and gave it to a friend who was in torment . As i found it absolutely a fucking sick joke what a dick head to have been suckered in and tricked for so long. Now when i get told theres nothing worse than a reformed smoker !!!!!!! But there is ? A FILTHY SMOKER. - Posted from rhpmobile

Was a heavy smoker, our house was filled with smoke...when I was a child I ended up in hospital with a collapsed lung and a partially collapsed lung....At the time the two things were not linked but now I do wonder....it makes me angry and sad to see parents smoking around their children. Great-grandparents, grandparents, parents... I must have stunk to high heaven as a kid because everyone used to smoke in the house and in the car. I started smoking when I was about 18 but for whatever reason was never addicted to it, I could not smoke whenever I felt like it so I went from being a social smoker to being a non-smoker when I decided to start trying to have kids. I find the smell of smokers to be quite nauseating now, it's not a judgement on their moral character and I do not in any way feel superior to someone who smokes, but it does make a person smell awful no matter how much gum they chew or how many mints they eat after a smoke. It gets in their clothes, hair and skin. I recently got told off in a message by a guy for being a "smoking bigot" because I have "no smokers - not negotiable" in my profile (complete with a "good day to you ma'am" which I thought was priceless!). I think that's a little unfair. I don't care if you smoke, I don't think less of you, I just won't kiss you. Surely that's something one should be explicit about in one's dating profile....?

When cigarettes got to $5.00 a packet, what are they now? Over $20 a packet? So this was back in the day when you could still smoke in pubs and in restaurants. I used the patches but found that they were just stringing things out so I stopped those before doing the step down that you you supposedly are suppose to do. I really enjoyed smoking, I was totally taken in with the marketing and totally addicted. I would buy expensive "stylish" cigarettes if I was going out and trying to make an impression...it was crazy really, they are no different to others, I had just bought into the myth.

Congratulations on being smoke free Missb72 .... an elderly work colleague of mine who had smoked most of his adult life undertook a session with a hypnotist and also walked out never wanting to smoke again. He has been smoke free for 6 months now. He said, after trying for years and different methods, it was the only thing that helped him quit. LG

Quoting 'Bigocean' Trying to quit does not work . Addiction to a repulsive bad habit . Its easy ? STOP. STOP. STOP. Just fucking STOP. - Posted from rhpmobile It's not easy to quit and impossible if you don't truly WANT to quit. Feeling guilty about not quitting is just not enough. The next anniversary of my quitting will be twenty five years! So I owe Mrs Denials big time, I'm sure I would not have succeeded if she hadn't enrolled me in the Quit programme on the first week the counsellor told us that if we could carry smokes and a lighter around with us we could also take a pen and paper too. We were told to record every cigarette with the time and a 1-5 rating for how much we craved that smoke. One week later I was told I was a heavily addicted smoker. Then we were told to examine the cues that made us want to smoke...with a beer, coffee after a meal, sex or a fright. The cues were many and various but they all made us want to smoke, so the next thing was to dissociate the cues from the smoking, the after dinner ciggie should no longer be smoked in the comfy chair but be smoked outside etc. The next step was to cut out the "low" score smokes as they were the ones least wanted and so on...by the end of the six week course I was down to less than 5 smokes day but hell did I want them or what! The final break was almost spontaneous...I woke one Saturday morning then went back to sleep for a bit of a sleep in, on re-awakening I told myself it was Quit day so I set aside a near new pack of roll your own tobacco and quit...it was easy but only because I wanted to and I was ready to quit.I still have dreams about lighting up but as an addict I know I can't do that. Best wishes to those who have yet to shake it off...you can but only when you truly WANT to...

My mum who has smoked all her life had a panic attack and literally couldn't breathe I remember looking at her in the hospital emergency ward struggling to breath and vowed from that day on I would never smoke again and have my kids see me like that. Because she relied on my brother and I to do her shopping and buy her smokes we told her we would no longer get them for her. So in a nutshell neither of us touched a cigarette from that day on ! To this day I am still so proud of her for doing it after 60 years of smoking !! My ex was a pack a day and since I gave up I realised how horrible it smelt , I couldn't even be in the same room as him ! - Posted from rhpmobile

cold , when I found out I was pregnant with our first child some 28 years ago.My husband stopped two weeks later as he did not want me or our kids to get residual smoke My aunt, my mother and my father have all died of smoking related cancer. My friends smoke and I have jam jars outside the house for them to butt out and they know not to smoke around me. they put the lid on the jar and then I throw the jar out. my girlfriend smokes and we often play together with a guy but she makes sure she has had a shower , washed her hair and not smoked for a good hour before we play but she still smells of smoke. I do not like the smell and can smell a smoker a mile away and it makes me gag. but i see the horrid addiction of it all, how cranky my friend gets when she cant go out for that fag. the cost should be enough to put people off I try to tell them that watching your parents die in absolute screaming agony is not a good thing for anyone to have to go through. my husbands family is also gone and its sad as my children have not had much time with grandparents. its a very selfish thing to do, to kill yourself by inches in front of people that love you and will miss you.

Hi Hope you don't mind me adding some of my experiences on here. I don't smoke, never had and my parents don't smoke either. My first experience was with relatives who smoked. They would sneak out of the house to smoke, and cover it up with gum, perfume, etc. Since then, I had been in relationships or dated smokers. I try to stand upwind from them so as not to get second hand smoke. It is a health problem for me as I get a reaction from something in the cigarette smoke. Anyway, these people all know the dangers of smoking. They just can't quit. They have tried many, many times but go back to smoking. They know it is bad for their health so it is not they are ignorant of the dangers. I like the new government ads, it is alright to quit and start again. If you do it many times, you will eventually stop for good. This happened to a colleague of mine. They joked about how he breaks his new year's resolution to quit shortly after. He did it many times until he quit smoking for good. Interestingly, it is good to hang around people who don't smoke. The people I dated smoked less when they were around me as they knew I don't smoke. It also motivated them to reduce/stop smoking. It is indeed the company we keep. For all those that quit smoking, congratulations. For those that are trying to quit, keep on trying. Every attempt brings you closer to your goal.

Tried the patches etc etc. What keeps us doing it is thinking we ENJOY it. What helped me quit was realising it was the ADDICTION that made me think I was enjoying it. I had panic attacks etc ... The odd glass of red wine helped and realising that, like giving birth, the pain does not go on forever. That was 14 years ago. When I'm around smokers I have absolutely no desire to smoke again.

... when I got separated. Moved into a unit and with all the expenses my 3 packet a week habit became unaffordable if I wanted to eat. I went cold turkey, and after a grumpy week (which wasn't helped by my situation at the time) I haven't started up again, thank goodness....

Quoting 'Keepitsimple72' I recently got told off in a message by a guy for being a "smoking bigot" because I have "no smokers - not negotiable" in my profile (complete with a "good day to you ma'am" which I thought was priceless!). I have also had similar responses keepitsimple. If someone sends me a message the first thing i look at is if they smoke, before i even read their profile or perv on their pics. If they are a smoker then i politely say i have a no smoking policy. Offering to shower and not smoke around me is absolutely pointless. I can actually smell the toxins seeping from someone's skin even if they have not smoked that day (and i don't even have to be up close and personal with them). Not only do i not like the smell i am actually allergic to the chemicals in cig smoke. Add to this the fact that i am also allergic to chemicals in perfumes and a smoker who tries to hide their habit with fragrance is my worst nightmare !!!!! I am like the canary in the coal mine when it comes to chemicals; it is bad for everyone but I am the first to fall off my perch !

Yes giving up is easy, I have done it a dozen times. Six months is the best I have done. For me it only takes one to start up again and it will usually happen when out with friends (who smoke) and my judgment has been affected by a drink or two. Unlike other people who have quit I still love the smell and taste and crave even after many months without. I have resigned my self to smoking, though I am not a heavy smoker. A pack will last me 2-4 days. I am not really afraid of the health effects as so far it has not in the least effected me. I have my uncles and aunts all of whom are still smokers, all still healthy and all 12 of them are aged from 85 to over 100. When they were young kids in primary school, they were encouraged to smoke. Crazzy I know but attitudes and understanding back then in Europe was very different. I fell that the quit campaign, supported by government greed is miss representing the health risks and that the taxing of an addictive substance (in the guise of protecting public health) is morally unjust (I am a student and dirt poor). The $3 Billion tax dollars are not being pumped back into health. That money could buy a brand new state of the art major city hospital every year. If it was so dangerous why not ban smoking like all the other apparently dangerous substances that are illegal? Why because the government would be in major financial stress if every smoker were to quit today. Maybe we should start taxing people that don't exercise. Create a fat tax as by far being over weight and not exercising is the largest public health issue Australians face today. And no I would never support such a ridiculous tax. With that said, I would never encourage anyone to smoke or start smoking, some of us are lucky and mostly immune to the detrimental effects but that is the exception. A big thumbs up to all those that have managed to quit and stay quit, I know how hard it can be. You have my 100% plus support.

Like many smokers, I started at a young age - in my early teens. Back then, all the cool kids smoked, and there were a number of places at school where one could spark up and not have to worry too much about getting caught by the school staff. In fact, there were one or two teachers who would actively warn us they were on their way, giving us time to finish and butt out before they arrived. But I digress.. Over the years, I've made a number of attempts to quit, trying most of the commercially available aids, but there was always something missing - my mindset. My two most successful attempts worked simply because I had achieved quitting "zen". Mentally, I was ready, and I didn't need any aids to quit, I simply decided I was no longer a smoker, and that was that. There were certain motivating factors that I won't go into, suffice to say that health was not a consideration. Unfortunately, down the track I weakened, and started smoking again., but I take the view that I've done it before, I'll do it again. One day..

I have access to certain GOV docs and there is lots the public don't knowin regards to GOV campaign and wish I could reveal. So I will just say a few things to give idea.Firstly putting anything in your body will change it-drugs-alcohol-pills-steroids and even Viagra so don't be fooled. The GOV is saying it cant support an aging population yet it is doingsmoke adds for smokers to quit and live longer.Smokers in most cases only kill themselves and yet drinkers can killup to 5 people with a car or at work in one hit.The GOV is testing the waters using smokers to next attack drinkersthe real target but know they would be voted out as most drink. The American Indian smoked for a few thousand years with no problemsand if you do anything in access /drink-smoke-eat it will catch up with you.Obesity and drinking kill more people than smoking and if we really want tosave lives close all fast food outlets-all alcohol -smokes-canned food. Then whine as the GOV takes more taxes from your wages to cover the billionsof dollars lost in taxes.I don't care if you attack smokers but just realize that taxes lost will be madeup out of your pocket not the smokers or drinkers and so on.

This is from the TobaccoinAustralia website (One of those .org ones): "Estimates based on data from the US and the UK show that for every 10 deaths caused by smoking among smokers, one death occurs in a non-smoker due to exposure to secondhand smoke." One in eleven, I think that number is huge myself. I'm very glad I quit 14 years ago, after smoking around 30 cigarettes every day.

Quoting 'chevtrek' I don't care if you attack smokers but just realize that taxes lost will be madeup out of your pocket not the smokers or drinkers and so on. The taxes coming from taxpayers pockets are coving the massive expenses for treating smoking related diseases..... And these costs exceed thew tax take on tobacco products, many times over. And the taxes come from EVERYONE. So to thank smokers for their taxation contribution.. is a totally laughable and a seriously stupid thing to say. I never smoked.... it was contrary to my attitudes when competing as an athlete and sports nut... and still, today, as a very physically active person. Just the smell of it coming from someone who has smoked earlier fills my lungs and makes me feel unwell for some time afterwards. So why should I be forced to sacrifice my taxes to supplement the health effects on people who choose to smoke in full knowledge of the significant negative health effects?!

I am not going to bother with the numbers, or the fact as it is a pointless debate as the blinkers are set to righteousness indignation. I will strongly encourage people to do their own research before making moralistic judgments. I say don't smoke, your an idiot if you do. But I am not going to lay blame. Quote; Mischeviouslad "So why should I be forced to sacrifice my taxes to supplement the health effects on people who choose to smoke in full knowledge of the significant negative health effects?!" With you on that, why should I pay Tax for all the people that drink and/or drive their way into life time care, all the Mc Kids that roll there way to bad health, all the uneducated who CHOOSE to not learn and thus die earlier, are sicker, have more accidents, spawn more free loading uneducated kids, and are more likely to go to jail. Oh and those selfish parent who choose to have babies with disabilities. WTF It's my TAXes people. They are for MY benefit, free loading hippy fuckers, fark! (Irony, sad that I feel the above statement requires that to be pointed out in here.)

The answer...... You shouldn't. But..... the points you've raised are more the domain of private health insurance and their risk analysis of an applicants circumstances. And when you sign up... they ask your age... then, your smoking status.
