September 24 2019

News today is that the Kik app is to go away. What group instant messaging app will we all use to communicate, share pics and vids with each other? Looks like we will be SnapChattimg to one another just like our teenage kids. - Posted from rhpmobile

SnapChat!!!! No way. All my kids use that, lame lol. I'll just stick with the messaging in app of the various sites if it does disappear.

Is this for real? Why would they get rid of it? I love it as I don’t have to give my Nunber out straight up.

Geez, I hope not. I'm not tech-savvy enough to cope with Snapchat! Is there also a bit of a privacy thing going on with kik, where you can keep your kik profile a bit more private? I feel kik is a stepping stone to phone numbers etc.

Did a quick google and the news is all over the place as of a few hours ago, must be true. Anyone mind if I ask how it's superior to Messenger for curiousity's sake? I've never used KIK. Peachy

On Messenger, they get your Facebook details. Most people on here want an anonymous message system.

It’s been confirmed but they have not provided a date they will shut the app down. Anyone else have other messaging apps that provide anonymity (besides Snapchat)? I don’t like giving out my phone number.

We like using Kik . It feels safe , you can block if someone steps over the line and it’s user friendly . A friend read its finishing this Friday . We had hoped it was a hoax , seems to be sad but true . Of course there is bigger issues in life but for us it’s unfortunate.

Hmmm Sounds like a rumour started by a competitor although kik doesn't seem to have a model that would make them money so perhaps they are shutting it down so that people use an alternative that does make them some $$$ I'll remain sceptical until it stops working and then stick to rhp messages, we pay for a membership and have the mobile app so no need to give out a mobile number etc.

There seems to be a couple of things going on that are creating mixed signals. The CEO posted a blog on medium stating they were focussing on the cryptocurrency and kik would end, he did not give a date. There's a picture floating around that purports to be from kik but no-one seems to know the source and last I looked there was nothing on kik website. The hoax part was reporting about a drunken email, this is not related to the CEO's blog post. I hope it doesn't end or that someone takes it over, I find it a handy messenger, it's not linked to a phone number, you can send live pics and video, so it's handy when still going though the vetting phase and aren't prepared to hand out a phone number or identify yourself fully. The group chat is also useful.

The unanimity on kik is a definate bonus, unattached to any other platform or phone number. It will be a shame to sed it go when we have only just got a handle on using it.

Good riddance We were getting sick of people contacting us with no profile photos, no details, then insisting on getting our KIK so they could send us photos. And when we did that, more often than not we end up with low quality images, dodgy conversations etc. No. If you are serious about meeting people do this here or go away. I just erased my KIK because I was sick of trying to figure out who is who from 15 different users. No more.

The group chat is also useful. I was confused by what I saw Temp. The stories I read mentioned a huge downturn in the number of staff from 80 or so to 19? Something to do with a "legal wrangle" with the SEC. That they would be focusing on crypto currency as you say. Ah yes, but the most recent update states that no end date has been given. Hmph. Cheers, Peachy

Wickr is terrible I’ve used it but don’t like it. I am often asked to use WhatsApp I don’t understand why people use this as it requires a phone number anyway. Anyone have any ideas why people use this app? Maybe we should create a committee and take over Kik

It sounds like is true but there isn't a date yet. I am curious to see what will take over. Wickr Me does not need a phone number or email, but it's a little less user friendly and it's so secure that you're screwed if you get logged out. There seems to be plenty of options but it will probably come down to privacy (ideally no phone number needed) and user-friendliness (ease to set up group chats, send attachments, etc.)...

Kik is indeed shutting down its messenger app to concentrate on its cryptocurrency business. Alternatives to kik are: 1) Signal 2) Wire 3) Wickr 4) WhatsApp 5) WeChat I’m sure there are more but time will tell which becomes the choice for most RHP users. I like Signal and Wire but they might be a bit more techy for some users.

We don’t use Messenger or SnapChat due to the anonymity issue, so Kik has been fantastic for us. Telegram has been thrown around as an alternative. Have tried Vibbr but it was crap. Might have to look into Wickr maybe..

With a burner email you can set up a Skype account. No phone number needed. Did it today. Very similar interface to kik. Rumour is it shuts down on Saturday (assume that is U.S. time).

First time forum poster, so - hugs for you all. Lots of legitimate news sites have this story, and snopes.com is a good fact checker and seem to think it’s closing. The date is not confirmed though. Word is the 27th was a hoax of sorts It was a good app for being completely anonymous and having features like blocking, large groups, multi media support, encryption and more. Telegram have put an appeal out to kik users to flock to them. Other viable and similar options are MeWe Line Signal Threema Discord And a few others. None of them quite have all the features of kik but some are close. It would be really nice if the one app was supported en mass by this lovely community 🤗
