The one thing we learnt early on was that you cant tell how you will click with some one by photos.. We all have preferences, but some of the best times we have enjoyed is with the couple we thought that we were not interested in .. Its charisma .. Sense of humour... And of course mutual attraction.

to want to identify and categorise things and people into recognisable groups. It's the way our minds work. The problem is when there is an automatic judgement against one of those groups that doesn't allow for characteristics of the individual. So topically "all overweight people are lazy and entitled." So in short, labelling isn't bad but stereotypes are. It's like in science, correlation doesn't equal causation. Just because John meets 3 overweight people who are also lazy and entitled, doesn't mean the excess weight caused the personality flaws. There are plenty of lazy, entitled people who are also not overweight. But it's hard to keep an open mind. It takes a concerted effort to not stereotype people. But it can be done, like you said Peachy, you need to make a choice to stop doing it.... Well, you won't be able to stop doing it necessarily, but if you choose to you can recognise that you're doing it and not give any validity to the automatic assumptions that happen in your mind. Good luck with it.

When stereotyping you're making an oversimplified generalisation about someone or a group of people, without regard for individual differences. Smokers are weak, overweight people are lazy, blonds are dumb and women over 40 are bitter. Describing anyone by single term is totally unfair, because you're basically stripping everything else they are away, leaving merely a one-dimensional ornament. Have someone hear they're something or other on a regular basis, and not only can't it be soul destroying, it can create a self-fulfilling prophecy. Whether stereopying is done in a negative or positive way isn't necessarily different I think. Saying gay men are fashion-savvy, black people are great dancers or Asians are great students can be just as damaging as it creates expectations that can be impossible to live up to. I believe there are always many more sides to people, something I see in my work with men and women who use hard-drugs all the time. No, not all heroin addicts are criminals, and even many of those in and out of gaol have plenty of redeeming qualities (I see how well most treat their pets as one great example). As for labels, it's easy to assume that someone not having safe sex is and idiot or that cheaters are just lying arseholes, where these behaviours are only part of who they are (and have different reasons), and don't define who they are as humans. I'm hoping comments here can be more about the content of people's posts, without others thinking they can look into a forumite's soul, and assume they know their character. Assumptions are dangerous thing, with a tendency to cause real harm. My 2 cts.

We will always judge and label certain groups of people.. .....its how we are. But as for individuals, its a case of getting to know that person and then having an opinion of their character. In an ideal world there would be no stereotyping.

Human behaviour developed over the eons. The minds defensive mechanism to protect ourselves those around us. We see examples of undesirable traits and stereotype them to instinctly be cautious in our dealings with them. But usually most of us still allow ourselves an opportunity to change our minds about them but we do so with caution. Always happy to be pleasantly surprised but I'm not changing.Happy with my approach to those around me.But been fucked over too many times to drop my defense. Doesn't mean that I tell you what my first impressions are of you though. Unless they give me cause.........then I'm happy to oblige. Annie xx

Stereotyping is a good way to say, "Generally Speaking This Group Of People Does/Likes/Hates/Believes This" Doing this is great for advertising, creating policies, managing people, selling, etc, etc. As long as your reasoning is well-researched and founded. When you stereotype people in a personal context or without valid reasoning (e.g. racism) - it becomes bad. Otherwise it should be seen as a good thing. It's being honest about ugly truths and I think as a society we need to be less scared about generalising and know the difference between 'good' and 'bad' generalising.

We are all individuals, we have our own experiences that shape our perceptions and how we react to things. As Koko said " its a case of getting to know that person and then having an opinion of their character" I was watching mean girls recently (lol, don't judge me) and this resonated with me "Calling someone fat won't make you any skinner. Calling someone stupid doesn't make you any smarter. Ruining someone's life won't make yours any better. The only thing that you can do in life is solve the problem that's in front of you". So why judge? Where does it get you?Live and let live.

Quoting 'TangerineDream' Doing this is great for advertising, creating policies, managing people, selling, etc, etc. As long as your reasoning is well-researched and founded. Ads continuously reiterate the notion that men are dumb when it comes to housekeeping, women buy cars for the shoe holders and little girls only want pink toys. Etc. Bloody annoys the fuck out of me sometimes.

Kinda can't go wrong, huh, lol. .This is sincerely a topic of long interest to me, from an age where you might not think I would have had the sense to understand but I've always been precocious. ;-) .A label can define a person and mean nothing. As you can attest Annie, even the labels, man and woman, can be questionable. :-).And hurtful. Peachy

You probably already knew this but, here's the answer to why - Women generally stay home during the day more than men (young families) + Cleaning products are best advertised during the day (right before you hit the supermarket). Seems sexist, but it's just numbers.

Seems sexist, but it's just numbers. I mean that in many ads that portray anything to do with the household, kids, or even repairs men are shown as lovable goofballs that would not survive without their wives keeping everything running. They wouldn't eat, have clean closes and certainly none of them would ever get any insurance, the poor helpless souls. Do guys not notice this?

Because when you understand all the pieces that make up 'why' this happens - you become less annoyed at the ads themselves. I could give a pretty interesting answer on why insurance is advertised the way it is advertised. I use the word 'interesting' quite loosely.

It's something that has grabbed my imagination as long as I can remember. .Advertising and how they manipulate us is part of that, I have visions of learning a high school lesson in the library, lol. The Checkout on ABC is a show we've enjoyed though the episodes have been out of date at times. .Labels can dehumanise people. It's easy to hate a label. But we are people, not necessarily the sum of our labels. Labelling can well be the easy way out. Don't give me any crap about it being online and irrelevant..'Slut' is a label that has been 'owned' by women in an effort to change perspectives of women who enjoy sex. .'Racist' was the label thrust on a whole crowd at the Eagle's footy game because a section or two had the audacity to boo last week. The fact is, the booing has been going on long before it was even raised as racism anyway. The celebration on this weekend has been praised... but not a word mentioned of the loud booing from the crowd at the Eagle's game. Poor form. .Thinking outside the box... is always a challenge. Hugs, Peachy.

Quoting 'Meander' Do guys not notice this? yes, I tried to write a letter to the company complaining about the ad, but there were dirty clothes on top of the keyboard - so I dumped them in the washing machine, but it started bubbling over and flooding the laundry and out the door, I ran to get a bucket but tripped over the iron's power cord, that pulled the iron over into the basket, the clothes in the basket caught on fire, the kids were crying, the dog was barking, and the smoke alarm was going off. My wife turned up wearing corporate clothing for her important career to see me sitting with a blanket near the fire engine, and then my dog walked out with the keyboard and dropped it at my feet. Fortunately GIO took care of the whole thing, they made everything so easy... (yes we notice, but generally nobody really cares, whereas if you scripted a daft housewife you'd never get it on air)
