Ladies, Females, Women, Girls, Chicks....semantics

April 15 2013

Personally I dislike being referred to as a 'Lady", it has class connotations that I hate. 'Females' sounds a bit clinical, veterinary even. I like to be called a 'woman', to me it sounds strong and powerful. Both Girls and chicks can be ok in the right circumstances but can be derogatory in certain situations or tones of voice. Women, how do you like your gender to be referred to? Men, which word to you tend to use, do you do it automatically or is it something that you've thought about? For men I use men or blokes. Hate grown men being referred to as boys, it seems to imply that they're not responsible adults and thus off the hook for anything stupid they do. Girls doesn't seem to have the same implication.

I personally don't care so long as it's not bitch. And I do like the term Lady.   So I guess its a case of each to their own.

yesterday reading some posts. Some men refer to women as 'females' and while absolutely true, I was thinking it sounded icky too. I am more than 'female'. I am VERY MUCH a woman. Although during particularly naughty moments being called a 'good/bad/naughty girl' is yummy, especially with my hair in your clenched fist. Call me a 'girl' IRL and I'd roll my eyes.

just a woman. No longer a girl, but if a man calls me ''girl'' in a particular way ,I find that sexy..eg ''Freya girl'' ...am I a lady?I suppose that is up to other's perceptions of me...

Woman, lady, girl, all good. I secretly prefer girl, but don't tell anyone. And while I like the word "Female", when someone talks about "The female", I find it a turn-off. The only one allowed to say that should be David Attenborough. Not a fan of "Chick" either. It sounds a bit derogatory to me, like "Bird". Maybe another two for Sir David? I do like "Lass" and love "Gal", but don't call me "Doll", "Babe" or "Hun" or we won't get on.

I think they are quite empowering words IMOE...Lately being called HUN/BABE is starting to bug me a little...its sweet if I'm your wife/partnermuba, that I am not. I like being called "sweetness"- it says to me "I think you're a sweet and kind" person....FOXY

Quoting 'Ms_Devious' I do like "Lass" and love "Gal", but don't call me "Doll", "Babe" or "Hun" or we won't get on.   Oh yes....one of my biggest pet hates is guys who don't know me at all calling me "babe", "darling", "sweety", "sweetheart", or any of those other pet names. Automatic no. I had a guy contact me recently who managed to incorporate all of those names into his drug-fuelled ramblings. Ugh.

I like being termed a woman and always have. Lady has class connotations that I dislike. Chick? Nope! I may be a bitch but I do not have eight tits so that is out as well. . Standard answer really is that I don't care what I get called sibling as I DO get called!- Posted from rhpmobile

Sorry i dont understand the point of this thread. Is it just to have a grizzle. or is this a really important thing for the women on here to discuss. in case I missed the point cause I can be a bit thick sometimes ok i will enter into the spirit of the thread as a guy i don't like to be called luv or darling. Oh when Humphy Bogart calls a women toots is that different.

I dont mind, whatever pet name you want to use is fine usually..sweety, sexy girl, honey, darling, dear, gorgeousness... Babe, spunk and toots grate on my nerves but I think some use them FOR that effect (???!!!), it's like hair pulling at primary school! A friend has a very nice way of saying both my first name and my full name like they're a caress, very sexy.

Girls and ladies. But age dictates which I use. Women i use also, but I think I use that most when talking about a professional woman or perhaps a collective. That may have some underlying meaning my subconscious uses, I'm not sure. When comparing it to men though, i don't think women have an equivalent to 'guy/s'. Its annoying. As I mentioned above.. I start my basis off age. Guy has a middle ground that, girl to woman doesnt have. I dont relate lady to being the same as guy. TTB

thinking about myself I'm just a girl, I don't get called a woman much by people as yet (I think that comes with their perception of your age and maturity) but I do get lady a bit (in a respectful way mostly).   Mostly this all seems to fit ok with me, I guess I don't really see myself as a "woman" yet, that seems a little too grown up for me at this point (interesting, because I've lived a pretty hard life and consider myself more hardened and stronger/tougher than most), suppose I just feel that I'm still young and soft and innocent at heart (beats the heck out of me why!), that's who and what I am, and "girl" best describes that IMO   as for pet names, it's ridiculous how many people who've known me for about 2 min's call me darl' or darlin' sometimes I wonder if it's in a patronising/condescending way(?) feel's as though they're protecting me from the truth of their opinions, like I couldn't (for whatever reason) handle the truth of what they're really thinking of/about me, but in the end, even if they are, I couldn't really give a damn what they think, I've fought a hard life to be who and where I am now, if they can't or don't recognise and respect it then they aren't worth my effort.   So in the end I just resolve to take Darl' or darlin' as a compliment, show's I'm not threatening to them or most people, and that they can feel comfortable around me quickly.   Sorry! rant over

Quoting 'Ms_Devious' but don't call me "Doll", "Babe" or "Hun" or we won't get on.   I HATE it when people call me "Babe", "Darl" or "Hun" and it's an instant turn-off. Only one person is allowed to call me by pet names and it's Mr Otori. I get it a lot from random women who seem to think it's ok to call everyone Hun. Annoys the crap out of me as it seems to suggest an intimacy that doesn't actually exist.I also dislike being referred to as a "girl". Sorry but girls are children, women are adults. So please call me a woman, or a lady.

to be called a woman.... it has such strong meaning behind it for me. However in the right circumstances I don't mind being called girl (good girl or bad girl ). Pet names well that depends on the guy I am with at the time... what works for one guy doesn't work for another.

I have been called 'young lady' many times and it always makes me snort with laughter as while I do my best to be ladylike in the public eye, there are really times when I am anything but!'Girls' I refer to people around my own age, although I have to say I don't really like being called one myself as I sometimes feel a little too old to be called one - how odd :/ I wouldn't call myself a 'woman' as such as I still believe I have a lot to learn and haven't quite reached that level of maturity. 'Female' I don't use at all unless it's in a jokingly clinical sense, as Ms D has made a reference to Sir David. 'Boys' and 'men' I use not depending on a person's age but on my judgment of their level of maturity. 'Guy' seems to be the in-between, or a grown-man who is really past the boy age but acts like one I will dub him a 'man-child'.

I have always been taught to address a lady as ma'am regardless of her age, it is pure respect. In a casual conversation with friends chick seems to be a standard, if I am not addressing the person directly, or if I do not know them very well. And as far as 'babe' or that sort of reference, unless your nurse that is looking after me in the emergency ward, don't call me hun or darl!
