Ladies Only ;-) All about Menstrual Cups

May 03 2013

Ladies (and gents who can't help but read this).I feel I have to share. I'm telling as many women as I can about this product - It has REVOLUTIONISED the way I cope with my period! I have told many girlfriends and they too are now converted and will never go back to towels or tampons. So, in case you haven't heard about it, there is a product on the market called a Menstrual Cup. It is what it sounds like. It's essentially a small medical grade silicone cup that is worn vaginally like a tampon - but instead of absorbing your flow (and all your other natural juices), it collects your flow directly from your cervix. Your other juices that come from your vaginal walls go around the cup/or stay inside where they are needed for a healthy vagina. They have been around for over 50 years but their design today is much better. They are clinically tested and safer than tampons (no toxic shock risk). The BEST thing is that you deal with your blood ONCE a day only. You put it in when you wake up and take it out before bed. You rinse and re-insert! You can't smell it, there is nothing external - in fact there is little evidence that you are even menstruating. Your partner could even go down on you!!! BONUS! There's no sitting in a meeting afraid to cough in case of that sudden warm gush, or getting discomfort from getting your tampax string caught in your knickers - or any other horrid consequence of towels or tampons. You can still wear your best knickers!!The catch is that it can take a little getting used to taking it out. There is a knack and it can be a little frustrating at first - but stick with it! It's absolutely worth it. The trick is to not insert it very deeply - it's not like a tampon that you place way up - it only needs to be a short way inside. If you put it in too deeply, it can be tricky to remove. The best way is to use your pelvic floor to lower the cup until your fingers can reach the bottom, squeeze then remove. This breaks the suction from your vaginal walls. Do not use the stem to 'pull' it out -this only increases the suction! The stem is meant to help with placement and to use as a depth gauge (though the paperwork doesn't tell you that). There are many different providers. I started with JuJu because they're an Aussie company. I then tried the UK Mooncup (not the same as the US Mooncup).I prefer the Mooncup over the JuJu - it's easier to remove and a better design. They are around the $50-70 mark but you buy it ONCE! So there's also a lovely environmental aspect too. There are no disposal issues, no changing in yukky public toilets or at friend's houses (where you don't know where to dispose etc). I have a girlfriend who's a police officer and she loves it too - she doesn't have to worry about needing to change at inconvenient times. They are tested for even the heaviest flows. I'm about average I'd say and after 16 hours on my heaviest days, it isn't anywhere near the top!Anyway - I would post some links but they might not get through. So google Menstrual cups and Moon Cup UK. There's heaps of tips and advice too on YouTube.Any questions, sing out! Ladies, I really can't recommend this enough!Yours,Jackie*Note: I'm not employed by any menstrual cup manufacturer and my only motivation for this post is to make your life easier during your period!

Quoting 'come_outand_play' I'm not sure I was a huge fan : (   Do you think they have improved? Hey, I guess it depends on what brand you used and how many years ago and what it was about it that you didn't get on with.? Certainly, I found a marked difference between the Juju and the Moon Cup - totally different experience.Of all the ladies I have suggested them to (who are friends and who have given me feedback or thanks), only one hasn't gotten along with it - but she didn't follow the instructions or my advice. I don't think her massively long nails helped either One other friend (like me) tried the Moon Cup and preferred it to the juju.I also think it takes a few cycles to really get the hang of it. There are lots of forum boards too that have really good advice for people just starting or having issues. My issue with the Juju was that after about 6 cycles, it stopped 'popping open' fully so sometimes I would get a little spot in my knickers. But the Moon Cup seems much better.

What a great read for some of the men on this site. I find it quite intriguing learning about these kinds of things, as menstrual flow, in my mind, is something that BOTH sexes should understand. I hear some blokes won't even be seen buying the sanitary pads for their girlfriends or whatever. Thank you for a great read Jackie. :)- Posted from rhpmobile

I'll be doing some research, sounds just what I'm looking for. Any feedback for those of us who have really heavy flow the first couple of days? (By heavy I mean changing every hour, and wearing both a tampon and a pad to bed and still not being able to make it through the night)- Posted from rhpmobile

(By heavy I mean changing every hour, and wearing both a tampon and a pad to bed and still not being able to make it through the night)- Posted from rhpmobile Sounds like you have it rough But yes, a couple of things. The cups are tested to around 12 hours (most of them) and that is simply because that has been the maximum time for cup 'fillage' for clinically recognised 'heavy' flow - women with Endo or similar uterine problems. There's nothing to stop you emptying your cup earlier if you need to other than a clean place to do it.Also, different cups allow for different flows - on some forums, women with very heavy flow all seem to prefer different models so it may be a case of trying a few based on forum research. One of my girlfriends had to wear a tampon and pad for the first two days of her cycle - now she just uses the cup (juju). I think she sleeps in hers too so empties and re-inserts before work and again after. She is happy with that arrangement given the alternative!Hope your research can help you choose the right cup for you.

Do you leave it in overnight? Remove and rinse morning and night right? Just wondering...

Quoting 'Awesome71' Do you leave it in overnight? Remove and rinse morning and night right? Just wondering... Hey Awesome,It's entirely up to you. Most of my girlfriends empty then re-insert so that they don't have any over night leakage - it also then lends itself to some naughtiness before sleep (how glad are we that our clit is external lol). They then empty, rinse and re-insert for the day.Personally, I do half and half, though frankly, I'm not sure why. I guess I leave it in if there's play to be had with Mr IAT, but wear a pad to bed otherwise. It also depends on how heavy that particular cycle is.The beauty about it is that because its medical grade silicone, it can stay in there for as long as you want it to (flow restrictions noted).

Can Mr IAT feel it when he enters you?

Quoting 'karynb' Can Mr IAT feel it when he enters you? Karyn, No, sorry. I should have been more clear. Any play with the cup in is clitoral only - there's no scope for penetration as the erm, 'space' is already taken ;-)I guess the emphasis on being able to play is that because unlike a tampon (where you have the string that hangs out and odour can escape through the cotton fibres) - there is no external evidence of menstruation. So before, where I've felt unclean and any kind of play was out of the question, with the cup, that's just not the case - but play is limited to external stimulation only - even on your heaviest days (and orgasms are great for menstrual cramps). The fab thing is because it doesn't absorb everything in your vagina (only your menses), if you get horny and wet - this still comes out and is the same as your usual non-period wetness with all its slippery goodness Hope that clarifies x

I work in a Doctor's surgery and have never heard of these. What a fantastic invention!! If I had my time over I would certainly be giving them a go!! Toxic shock, inability to change conveniently, environmentally friendly, and cost wise. How much to we spend in a lifetime on tampons, pads, depo etc. thankfully there comes a time in a woman's life where this can all be kissed goodbye. In my case a good old course of chemotherapy helped me along the way!!! Now all I need is revolutionary product like this for flushes. Got To love being a woman!!!!! - Posted from rhpmobile

I have one too. I have to empty mine far more frequently than the OP, and I have been known to get that..warm rush. For me, mine leaks overnight, so I just don't bother (I still save money in the long run). Dealing with a slaughterhouse at 2am in winter is not fun. That said though, the amount of times I now have to do anything period related has lessened by at least 2/3s. Further, you can get them off a major online auction site for as little as 20$, and people in the menstrual_cups livejournal sure report you CAN have PIV sex (and toys) with them in. I like being able to go out and not have to worry (too much) about accidents, and if I think my period is going to start, I can be protected before it makes a mess. - Posted from rhpmobile

Yes BrightBubbly - Diva Cup is a USA brand I think and it reviews quite well from memory. Peregrine - I wonder whether your cup isn't opening fully? If its properly fitting and properly placed, you shouldn't get any warm gushing. Some open better than others and I've also found some variation with both my cups according to which fold I use for insertion. I prefer the 'y' or 'push down' for comfort but the 'c' seems to open better so I mainly use that. Maybe have a look at some of the cup comparison sites to see if there's a cup more suited to you.
