Life threatening allergies (anaphylactic reaction)

November 17 2013

Hi Everyone, I am a first time poster and reasonably new to RHP. I have found I enjoy reading the forums and hearing all of the different opinions and views that are expressed. I did search for this topic before posting and could not find the information/advice I was after... I have someone very close to me that has a severe life threatening allergy to all nuts and have heard stories of the first kiss that inadvertently killed as the non allergic partner had eaten peanuts prior. So I am very interested in hearing from those that have this allergy and how they have managed to stay safe and any advice they can give. Or even from those that have come across this as a non allergic partner and how this impacted on them and the relationship and their thoughts on this. My questions are these; 1. Do you have a life threatening allergy? 2. What if any steps do you take to stay safe? 3. Do you find it impacts on your sex life? or 4. Have you had a partner with a life threatening allergy? 5. How did you find this impacted on your relationship (negatively or positively)? Thanks everyone for your time MissB

Having an allergy to nuts must put a dampener on oral sex. Sorry, Missb72 I can't give you anything useful, although having an life threatening allergy must be a massive pain. And how come some so many kids are allergic to nuts these days? Banning peanut butter at schools...... jeez that was like a staple diet for some kids in my day.

But I have an allergy to fish (cue the smart comments...). I can eat shark, shellfish and occasionally tuna. Anything else and I find it hard to breathe.

I have an allergy .. to some items .. at times it has caused big issues, but thankfully society is helping to diminish these issues for me rather than me having to take the action.I have on a few occasions been hospitalized because of my allergy, and one two occasions it was so sever I actually had a respiratory arrest in the back of the ambulance on route to the hospital . Even tho society is assisting in some regard, I myself try and avoid placing myself in situations and places where my allergy will flair up .... What does my allergy do ---- IT SHUTS DOWN MY AIRWAYS,How is it treated apart from avoidance - WITH CONTINUOUS MEDICATION. What am I allergic to - PIPE AND CIGAR SMOKE AND THE PAINT AND ASSOCIATED PRODUCTS USED IN CAR SPRAY SHOPS.Hence why my profile says NON smokers .. recently whilst working, a client came into our surgery, who has a sever reaction to nuts, emergency situation, how did they encounter the nuts, simply by brushing past some one in the shopping centre who was eating a snickers bar .. skin contact and was near fatal .. I have extreme sympathy for people with allergies ..

Not all that funny seeing the teenage girl died. This happened in Canada in November 2005. However six months later the coroner ruled her death was not the result of coming into contact with peanut butter at all. Source: http://www.news-medical.net/news/2006/05/14/17942.aspx OP, I can't imagine what it's like to live like that. Luckily I'm not allergic or intolerant to anything.

That's rare mrs Cheeky, I'm allergic to oats too. Not anaphylactic luckily but skin rashes and swollen joints. Not good!

I'm allergic to bananas and vegemite- not to the point of having an anaphalactic fit, but uncomfortable still. I have a friend who has nut allergies, and at his 40th a few years back, someone gave him a chicken skewer which had some satay on it...within minutes he was red faced, swollen lips, and gasping for air as we waited for an ambulance. I honestly thought as he clung to my arm that I was going to see him take his last breath! His wife was hysterical, and it was up to me to keep him calm and breathing as normally as possible-but it was horrible!

I'm allegric to onions, mushrooms, MSG, nuts, preservatives and latex. I have gone from anaphylactic when I was younger to now experiencing vomiting, stabbing pain , headaches, rashes and welts. It's not easy to go out to dinner or shopping at the super market but I am used to it now and have learned how to manage it. I don't go out much to dinner as there is nothing much I can eat. Australia has finally started providing comfortable and sexy condoms but means I have to provide my own and be prepared. Life is interesting but such it life. I'm used to it now.
