University nowdays is heavily leaning to off-campus and remote access to materials. Make sure you find out enough about the course you are considering because you may find there is no reason to relocate at all. Your profile is blocked so I don't know where you currently live but if your username implies you love the ocean you aren't going to be particularly enthralled with Clayton-(not)-on-sea. Clayton is not particularly close to the city and is in the South East so living out of town to the north is not a realistic option for easy travel. If you like trains then you want to be on the Cranbourne/Packenham/Dandenong lines. Alternatively, there would be plenty of buses heading further out down Wellington Road, Ferntree Gully Road or Princes Highway. The accommodation options out that way are going to be a lot cheaper than the more centrally located university campuses. It all comes down to where you want to live rather than what you can afford. You will find plenty of job opportunities in the big city. Naturally there is competition for jobs but university students are typically highly-motivated employees and employers love motivated staff.

In Melbourne is stuffed. Maybe improved by 2018. Makes the public transport look attractive. Who would have thought....

Dare I be so bold as to say the works needed now were foreseeable at the time of design but like all governments they create more work so they can use them as political point scoring measures....the cunts - Posted from rhpmobile

It comes down to your budget and whether you have a car. There are lots of accommodation for students around the Clayton area. Lots of buses and trains. Great thing with Melbourne, compared other Australian cities, is that we have public transport (train only?)all night throughout the weekend so finding part time hospitality jobs in the city will be quite easy n easy and safe to.get home. Try Carnegie, Springvale (for cheaper accommodation) and oakleigh. Definitely buy a bicycle if you intend to train it to from work n school. this saves you the trouble of waiting for buses to go to trains. You can leave your bike in the station. Lots of people do this. Get a small car to zip around. easily done and lots of selection here in Melbourne. Mt Waverley Canfield and chadstone are nice areas and handy to Monash but can be pricey for students. If you want to have access to the beaches, live in St kilda, Windsor or prahran. Lots of backpackers and students do. High density area Packed with flats and shared housing. More fun in the weekend if you are on your own. Best of luck

Second what Andremmo said. Clayton is tough to get to from anywhere not on the Dandenong train line. Buses can be a bit slow and may require a change, too. But there are regular free shuttle buses between the Caulfield and Peninsula campuses and Clayton, so you can commute to Frankston or Caulfield and have ready access to Clayton. You might find affordable accommodation down Frankston way. It's also readily accessible to "country" style living (and Shed 16, lol).

What Lilyorchid said is a good summation of the areas. Annie have you tried driving around Sydney in the peak, Melbourne is a dream compared.

I do keep trying to find ways to not have to relocate from the current remote location but unfortunately my passion is science and to complete this degree requires extensive labs on campus so regardless of if I stay in Queensland or go elsewhere it means a relocation. But thank you for the info it is all great and appreciated :-)
