Meeting New People When You Know No One?

February 02 2014

In 1 week I am moving to the Gold Coast to live with Mr and am leaving all my friends, family and old life in Hervey Bay, where I have so far lived all of my life (24 years!). While I am extremely excited to be moving to a big city with a completely different atmosphere, and being able to be with Mr all the time instead of only seeing him once a month I am at the same time pretty nervous and a little unsure. Other than Mr and his flatmate I will know no one on the Gold Coast. My question is this. How do I go about meeting new people in a town where I know no one? I would love to make some new female friends but have no idea how to go about it. I am not a particularly brave person when it comes to meeting new people. I am actually a little bit of a hermit and I do find it hard to make new friends but once I have they are usually friends for life. I had considered possible doing some sort of fitness class or hobby class to meet people that way but would that really be the only way to make some new friends? Taby xx

Although I'm sure your inbox is now flooding with messages of the type that I'm not sure you're really looking for. I had to do the same thing a couple of years ago. I've met loads of lovely people volunteering at my local neighbourhood centre and through my kids school. I know that wouldn't be your cup of tea but joining a sporting club was great when I was in Sydney too. I did a lot of volunteer work for the local soccer club and the social scene was fantastic. Although I joined a team and tried to play (BAHAHAHA), I had more fun working in the canteen and in other capacities. Sunday arvo drinks after the main game was great fun. Check out your local rugby club ....

Where there's people that are the people you want to be like... Sporting groups, book reading clubs, volunteering anywhere... You are looking for peers... Just take it easy on the rugby boys... I hear that they are still recovering... 😈😈 Hp xo 💌 Because you're worth it...

I understand what you are saying, I moved/transferred with work to Brisbane and didn't know a single sole. Best move I ever did tho. ;) SHHHHHHHHHH but a little sparrow chirped in my hear, that sometime in the near future a meet and greet is going to be organized. ;) Meet and Greets are a great way to meet people. I have meet some amazing people at meet and greets. Also try the site meetup (dot) com Hope your move goes smoothly. :) Foxy XX

Re: Paint_me - Sadly no inbox messages to speak of as a result of this post but I'll keep trying ;) I have had a look at volunteering jobs around the area I will be moving to and sadly there isn't much I'm interest in. Other than gyms there is also a real lack in the variety of classes one can take so that's a bit disappointing! :( Superfoxxxy - Tell me more! We would love to attend a meet and greet or any good swingers party on the gold coast but we are yet to find any :( They like single women appear to be unicorns! ;) Stir_it_alot - I wonder about my personality sometimes lol I'm actually a massive hermit outside of RHP land and I find it very hard to communicate with new people in everyday situations. Maybe this is why I'm such a chatter box on the forums! Taby xx

Leave your baggage behind and get on with what you're passionate about. Classes are great start, or volunteering for a cause you care about, performance etc etc.

Tabby my dear I shall answer you first, after all this is your post ! Welcome to the GC I moved here a number if years ago and I understand your predicament All you have to do is have an open point of view and the rest will follow There are some very image concious, self absorbed, pretentious people on the coast but if you find you way past them you will no doubt find some wonderful people Quite often you might find that those real people are not actually from here originally - just saying (and I am probably goig to vet s public stoning for these comments) Anyways, I have admired You from afar and have always enjoyed your points of view Unfortunately I am a guest which prevents me from messaging and your probably not too interested in guys (even if we make good friends !) If however the two of you would like to catch up then feel free to get in contact with me As for meeting others .... Get involved with the things you like That way your meeting like minded people There is a bit of a craze at the moment with SUP'ing - stand up paddle boarding There are a number of places that let you try for free There are a plethora of free activities around the city but it all depends on what the two of you are into ... Surely Mr Taby (not that your hubby and wife) has a network of friends and also handful of interests, I see he is a beach going and fitness person etc which is consistent with most on the Coast Anyways, the offer is out there if you would both like to meet There are a few members here from the GC, just don't be shy, live outside your comfort zone and you will grow and have no troubles meeting people Best of luck Take care X

If you're into a sport, that's a brilliant way to meet people you have at least one common thing with. Maybe learn a new one. You've got an awesome body - the LFL team up there would go nuts over you!

I've only just moved also, leaving behind my small country town that has been my home for the past 22 years. It was my safe place, I knew everyone, everyone knew me.... But it's time for a change and time to move on, I know very few where I've moved and have decided to sit back and enjoy the ride.....good luck lovely..... - Posted from rhpmobile
