Menstrual sponges & Mirena IUD - * girls eyes only **

October 30 2013

Question for the women only... Men look away. :P I thought I would ask this here as couple profiles can not see SWB. My question is about using sponges when you also have a Mirena IUD. I can't find any specific info however on the official website it states you may still use tampons but you must take care not to pull the Mirena IUD strings when removing the tampon So I would assume that it's definitely not a good idea to use the beppy sponges during sex as damaging the strings or even potentially pulling the IUD out is definitely a possibility. Does anyone know for sure??

Just a quick question......or two. 1. Wouldn't it get a little cramped ??? For room I mean. 2. I feel for you women, I really do. With all these devices like the IUD, beppy sponges etc, don't you gals feel like you're trying to pack a black powder cannon??? - Posted from rhpmobile

You won't be needing tampons etc as the Mirena actually stops your periods. You may spot for the first month but after that you are period free! Also if your lover can feel the end of the Mirena, you then need to go back to the doctor to get it adjusted.Pusscat xxx

Watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat. ;-) Which begs the questions, if you use a rabbit vibrator I won't electrocute myself will I? :P

I am hoping so, although only 20% of women don't have periods at all. 70% of women still have something even if it's one or two periods a year. :)

Yes, you can use sponges, but need to be very careful not to pull the strings when your getting the sponge out, it does increase the risk of infection as bacteria can travel up the strings. She suggested a cervix cap or cup as a better option as it fits around the cervix and is easier to remove.

    Did you ask the question?

I certainly did. Been having problems, had the merina and still having to mix it with extra hormones to have breaks from bleeding. It's been screwing up my sex life in a big way :( I'm very open with my dr about my lifestyle, have made her wriggle and blush a few times, but prefer to be open and get the right information.

Can't they cause some suction which could dislodge the IUD? I have never used one before and my IUD is only three weeks old so I am still learning!

if you don't ask, you won't know!I'm not sure about the suction, she didn't mention it and I didn't think to ask, just that they would be a better option! I haven't used a cap or cup before, going to try and get one and give it a go. Lucky I can try these things out on hubby before taking them on the road!Has anyone else had any experience with cups or caps? I seem to remember a thread about them earlier this year.........

As a gynaecologist (really - I have a LOT of knowledge of the workings of the female organs - why don't you let me show you) I can reassure you that you are incredibly unlikely to pull out an IUD yourself - the threads are small and slippery. Other things instead of a sponge to consider would be a diaphragm - at least it is reusable. There is also a purpose-made device called the MoonCup - probably safer than the sponge

You can't have intercourse while wearing the Moon cup, as the little stalk on it could seriously injure a man's cock.

"Can I have sexual intercourse when the MoonCup is inside me?"No, you would find that out pretty quickly that your partner would meet the little stalk on the bottom of the cup! The MoonCup is in no respect a contraceptive device - it is a menstrual cup. You sure you're a gyno?
