Motorhoming

August 22 2015

Quite a few years back I attempted to organise a trip with purely platonic friends :) to share a large motorhome and travel around New Zealand. I had arranged a private hire of an 11 metre, 6 berth converted road coach (me as the driver with the heavy vehicle experience). The plans fell though, but the idea remains. I know from these sites that some people (esp Mildura/Echuca areas) are fond of sharing a houseboat with other friends/swingers, for an "alternative" relaxing holiday. What would people think of doing a similar thing in a large motorhome, and travelling (in Victoria for instance) the Great Ocean Road, the Great Alpine Road, or perhaps the Gippsland area? Obviously other states have other well known routes. The shared costs make individual contributions quite small. Obviously this would appeal mainly to friendly couples, so maybe an idea for a few years down the track with a suitable friendship network that know they get along as such? And has anyone done a similar thing?

This idea makes me cringe. I personally couldn't do it. I desperately need my space and my me time everyday. Feeling like I didnt have an escape would send me into a panic.

Missb72 love the new photo. travelling with other people is always tuff and the longer the trip the more issues can arise.

I don't think it would have to be exclusively the domain of couples - could work equally well with a number of singles who could get on with each other if the trip was of a shortish duration. I believe the idea has some merit, and should be followed up - I'm sure there would be a likely lot of people who wouldn't mind something unusual such as this. I wouldn't even mind something like that myself - I could even help out with the driving as I have a HC (semitrailer) drivers licence. Probably even Stirry might be able to get in the picture, if he could get time out. Well worth some extra thinking. Tall

Hired a 40ft catamaran a few years ago for a long weekend (when I was attached), with 2x other couples. Had no worries as you had your own cabin to go to if you wanted, or just relax on the fore dick (oops foredeck), can anchor up when you want, walk on the beach, fish, go out or just relax. Great weekend except I was the only one that could sail so spent most of the time on the helm, which was not a big issue. Personal preference but I would prefer a yacht to a bus. Great idea though if you get on with each other and are reasonably easy going.

I love this idea - it is like a group tour with "extra programme in the evening" :) I assume it does not mean it is COMPULSORY to play in the evening - one might not feel like to - but at least being in the company of like minded people always makes group tours a great fun.. Sign me up! :)

I can see it working for some but seeing I value my own space I'd be itching for that piece of solace at the end of the day... I'm quite happy to party when it's happening, but 24 hrs a day ' I'd feel somewhat crowded...

No one said it's 24 hours a day together, like a mobile big brother house. Just a shared means of transportation with people you know that you get along with, in different ways... Once you've arrived at a town, some might want to go down to the beach, others to the pub, maybe fishing, shopping, trying food outlets, tourist venues, reading, drawing etc etc. It's a holiday after all! After dark atmosphere may or may not be a different story. You could also arrange catchups with others that people know in the area.

Had the same idea myself but for a group road trip across the US. Would love to make it happen someday.
