Originals that can't be bettered in a cover.....

September 11 2013

Firstly thanks to SirSwan for inspiring this topic. His thread on covers got me wondering are there certain songs where the original is so good you can't conceive of a cover ever being better? To start it off here are two suggestions (I happened to be listening to Edith Piaf when I read his thread)La vie en rose - Edith PiafNon, Je ne regrette rien - Edith PiafI am sure you each have a few favourites you would consider a cover to be sacrilegious!

Here's a few of my favourites that I wouldn't want anyone else to try and cover because they are perfect already IMO   - Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin   - Sailing by Rod Stewart   - Money by Pink Floyd   - Hell's Bells by ACDC   - Imagine by John Lennon   I could go on, there are so many!   SF

Recently went to a concert of hers - she told us a story. She originally wrote "horses" about her daughter....lol, but when she comes to Australia everyone complains about her covering a Darryl Braithwaite song. Naive me had no idea - but I definitely liked her version more :-) Mrs B- Posted from rhpmobile

Have you heard the Andrea Bocelli version of La Vie En Rose? I love the Edith Piaf version but I have to say Bocelli's is just as beautiful- Posted from rhpmobile

I can't see anybody else singing it. But honestly there are so many. As a devote Queen fan, I can't listen to anyone singing their sonds accept for Freddy.   Joe Cocker's "Leave your hat on"   Powderfinger, many.   ACDC, not that I'm a fan but.   City of Angels, Hot Chilli Pepers, plus many more.   The list is tooooooo long, Paint it Black, Rolling Stones plus many more.   Ego is not a dirty word, Skyhooks plus more.   Ect, ect, ect, ect, ect,.......you get the picture.

I wonder why we even go to the expense of recording a cover when we have so much untouched talent here in oz let alone over sea's...I just don't get it, but them a lot of covers are tribute recordings out of respect...give me a new sound that's different...   Dave Gray all the way...xknots

'Like a Version' has made me rethink my whole cover attitude. As long as they don't 'copy' the song, but reinvent it, it's given me plenty of awesome.   *chortles at Mister Green's Jake joke*

Ironically I mentioned 'Bohemian Rhapsody' earlier on this thread, Rolf Harris does a cover of this. He also does a spur-of-the-moment cover of the 'Divinyl's - I Touch Myself 'as part of a radio challenge.

Quoting 'MisterGreen'Nobody could ever copy Vanilla Ice ...;) And yet he stole most of that song from Queen and David Bowie's Under Pressure. White Lion covered Radar Love, and it was a big success for them. But Golden Earring's original version from my birth year is just so much better. (Actually, Wikipedia just whispered in my ear that the song was also covered by U2, Carlos Santana, James Last (really???) and Def Leppard, amongst others).
