Ovation of the Seas Christmas 18 till New Years 19 NZ

January 29 2018

I’ve just booked this cruise for our family on Ovation for Christmas and am extremely excited to say the least. No doubt some of you have already been on it. What are some of the things you recommend booking or not booking prior the cruise that’s better than leaving it to the last minute? Is anyone else going on that particular cruise? If you have been on it what’s your thoughts of it? What’s the night life like? Is it an environment where you can slip away with others with ease 😉

We have done three RC cruises including the NZ one over New Years, just not on the Ovation yet unfortunately. Based on the cruise we did a couple of weeks ago I’d pre pay for drinks, onboard beers are about $7.50, spirits $8.50 and cocktails $14.00. Add 18% to all prices for tips and you can quickly see how pre paying $70 odd a day can be far better value. We did make the mistake of pre paying for a few specialty restaurants as well and were disappointed when we got on as they were selling the same things and more at cheaper prices. Enjoy your cruise, Ovation looks like an amazingly big ship 🛳👍😄 - Posted from rhpmobile

I've done a couple of RC cruises, Voyager out of Sydney at Xmas time and Azure out Miami. Definitely go for the anytime or my time dining. If you're going to do a drinks package wait until you board, they normally have it discounted just before you sail. The Australian cruises are great because you can prepay your gratuities whereas in the USA you prepay but they still expect another 3-4% on top every time you get a drink. RC certainly have a great reputation and I'd sail with them again.

Thanks for the comments that’s a good start. I’m sure there would be some others on here that have been on it or going.

Hi! We are cruise junkies but haven't been on one for 15 months now. Definitely book your tours beforehand but buy your drink package on board. If the cruise is originating in Australia then don't accept the automatic addition of gratuities. See the purser and make her/him remove it from your account. We usually end up giving the same amount but to the person who has done the work and looked after us. P&O in 2010 took off the gratuities but you can check with consumer affairs and they should confirm that the auto addition is illegal. Have a great trip and make sure you have insurance because on board doctor/health ($400 per visit) is very expensive if you are not covered.

We are going on the Explorer in January and would be keen to know if anyone else will be on the same cruise.
