People power?

February 25 2013

I went to the Fremantle Esplanade yesterday to march for a pristine Kimberly and catch a bit of music. After I clapped and carried a banner, donated some coin to the cause, I got back to find the freeloaders had taken all the good spots in front of the stage.Oh well..So I find another good spot and settle in to listen to Missy Higgins. I was so impressed I bought the CD. Significant as I nearly never buy mainstream CDs. A total indie bloke is The Engine. A few good speeches and a movie on the big screen. Then it's John Butler Trio I listen for a but, as competent a muso as he is, I find his material boring. So I go into Freo to get an ice cream. I sit on the steps of the Espy listening to Mr Butler, eating my ice cream, people watching.I disgruntled bloke walks past saying "These idiots will not achieve anything with all their singing and clapping". The odd thing was he was sympathetic to the cause. Most of the developers don't particularly want to be at James Price Point. Woodside are only still in because of a bunch of what is effectively your tax dollars helping them. Thank's Mr Barnett. Shell say that would rather have a floating production facility. Other venture partners would like to pipe their product to the Pillbara where this sort of infrastructure already exists. But that's not the point of this post. I think people power still counts for something in our slightly broken democracy. My question is, what can you remember that was changed by protest, big or small?I'll start. Remember that ID card we were going to get?

refused to give up her seat on a bus and helped change the whole of the South of the United States Ghandi , Martin Luther King etc..all had dreams and made them a reality – the betterment of their nations. You can do and achieve anything in this world if you truly believe and are passionate enough to walk your talk and be the change you want to see Power the people – every one of us can make a difference everywhere on anything

To rain on evey bodies parade but the whole people power thing just ain't gunna work no more,da rich and powerful are almost at there height of untouchability and ain't going to let ever day people like myself take away everything that they have worked so hard at rorting, ripping off and scheming there whole lives for. The only place it just might occur would be some god forsaken 3rd world country where the rich and powerful have no interest in.This is just my opinion and thoughts so please don't any one go getting all upset or hysterical and write in abusing me as this would make me quite nauseous and seeing that i'm feeling abit off colour today this would not be a good thing for me lol,jsk

I often used to remove my cap as a young nurse. Always got in trouble for it but it made sense when I had to keep putting my head in an oxygen tent. Someone must have taken notice because we no longer have to wear caps and/ or veils

Immediately comes to mind and so glad they didn't dam that. If only the original Lake Pedder could have saved as well.In terms of social media the overthrowing of regimes in Libya, Egypt and Syria.

You pipped me at the post! I too have posted a thread regarding this cause (different slant though)(waiting approval). I was at the rally, but sadly had to leave after the march. If I knew you were there, would have said "hi". I have been a passionate activist for more years than I care to remember! I choose to believe that the "fanfare of the common man" can make a difference. Fingers crossed for this one. KK xx

... my thread hasn't been approved. Maybe a reference to a website isn't allowed (oops), however I was just appealing to folk to support the preservation of the Kimberley. Please moderators let this go through :-) KK xx

Examples of people power in Australia? And often it does not take 20 000.I actually did a little googling. The Sydey bathing costume rally of 1907 sounds hilarious.

I am not sure what you think of as people power jsk but there are so many achievements as a result of people power. The introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme is one. In 2002 when the Liberal government was going to cut $10 million funding to the disability sector we lobbied and won and kept the funding. The listing of many world heritage sites have come about as a result of people power and yes, there may be groups that lead campaigns however they are led by people, many of them unpaid. Your comment "some godforsaken 3rd world country" where the rich and the powerful have no interest, I find rather naive. Regardless of the size of the piece of dirt, if there are minerals the rich and the powerful will do their damnedest to get hold of it. And I truly don't think god has anything to do with change, people power creates changes, both big and small, here, there and everywhere.
