Rating posts?

September 28 2013

Every now and again I come across a post that I feel perfectly answers the OP's question or addresses the issue but the only way to acknowledge the post is to quote it which can look very lame and look like I am crying for attention.   What is the communities view on having the ability to rate a post, something easy like a 'thumbs up / thumbs down' type of thing. And of course to make it worthwhile, you should be able to click on the post and see who liked it and just as importantly, who didn't.   And for any RHP Admins reading this, might make it easier to see who is worth of instant posting privileges as well.   Mooka

One man's 10/10 post is another's trash. Rating will always be deeply subjective, and I think I'd find it bloody annoying. My guess is that at best it would lead to an immature popularity contest. JMO - feel free to rate it ;)

Firstly, I would never see anyone quoting a post as lame, or calling for attention. It is OK to cry though. he he.I can see your point, though if it turned into a beauty contest and out of order (meaning posts selected due to rating numbers 1st to last)Then it may become a bunch of posts that are more aimed at what the majority wants to read, rather than speaking openly. It is the (contest) that could take the best interest out of the forums. maybe. If none of that changes, then it may help some of the readers that don't feel comfortable to write, to show a concern with interests.Good topic mooksMado

Great idea however site building is a luxury addition and only undertaken if profitable in a marketing sense. This site has remained virtually the same since launching all those years ago. We will still post regardless of added auxiliary functions..Posters could maybe adopt some indicator jargon among ourselves. Dunno really? Like the mooka~ inventiveness..There is likely a word/phrase check program scanned over all posts and any flagging may require proof read of a human to check content before allowing through..My posts frequently get canned as do our pics we try to put in our own PG2. And the reason is never given and the risque subject can be tame but rejected anyway. The sensor is indeed inconsistent in their judgement. We flagged well and truly.

a kind of a ratings system for OPs in how many responses there are.I agree that posting would perhaps become compromised with a popularity contest ensuing....Poster Girls and Boys....who's hot or not

We have a somewhat private wall painted with blackboard paint, to rate our special ones in bright colored chalks.

Sorry mate, but I dislike the suggestion to rate posts. A like button maybe, but even then I think it would still breed an environment of popularity being the higher focus, and I think that that would warp some people's views in order to be liked, accepted etc if I may use that description loosely. The forums in my opinion are an arena for open discussion, for any user, any topic, anytime. Let's keep it that way. Deepbluesomething...... Your post on this one has wrapped it up for me. - Posted from rhpmobile

it's not a particularly practical idea. As has been said, what's one mans (or womans) wine is anothers poison. Too easy to turn it into a popularity contest which defeats the whole idea. Sorry, but   Tall

Okay, that idea went over like a lead balloon lol   The thing is I have seen the 'like/not like' rating system on other forums and it worked well. Now these forums weren't on a site like here and compared to a couple of them, this forum is a CWA meeting with scones and tea in terms of attacking posts.   As for the problem of people just clicking on the liking and not liking buttons to curry some favour, they were normally easily identified and at least on one site, named and shamed for being spineless pricks (told you it was a tough site lol).   So I accept the communities decision and just continue to quote posts that I think are worthy (and those that I disagree with).   Oh and for the few that thought my suggestion was anyway related to elitism via the instant posting ability, what can I say except ... guess you can't :D   Mooka
