There are quite a few songs that do bring back memories for me. Some good memories, some bad. Just like a lot of people. I however tend to just appreciate them all anyway. It's whats made me, me. And I don't like to let myself feel spoiled, listening to something I consider to be great music. Where would it end? Feeling crappy about a poor date while watching a movie you enjoyed at that time? Not drinking a certain delicious drink because someone you loved enjoyed it with you at one point? Naaa, the bad memories and little luxuries of life are still there. However, only one of them are there to be enjoyed. Why do that walking around with a sour taste in your mouth. Just my theory...

Breakfast at Tiffanies is the harbinger of doom. When it was first released, it got massive amounts of airplay - in fact, I'd usually wake up to it on the clock radio. After about a month, the relationship I was in fell apart.Fast forward 15 years, and I hadn't heard the song in ages. All of a sudden, it started to get a lot of airplay. After about a month, my marriage broke down.Coincidence? I think not!

For me it's ...the Living Years by Mike & the Mechanics....i realize that's a very moving and emotional song about Mike Rutherford not being there when his father died and i can appreciate and understand that. It's just that I remember when it came out and it got PLAYED TO DEATH even when it wasn't in the charts anymore. You'd turn on the radio it was being played, changed the station it was being played there too. Watch the music chart shows it was being played there for months on end and by that stage it was ranked something 199 in the top 200. Nearly every single compilation album that came out around the same time had it on.it just totally ruined for me to the point where if i hear it start (even now) i'll either turn it off or leave the room.

So Beautiful.....That was harsh! I don't think there are any songs that are ruined for me at the moment but there are a few that are hard to listen to without them evoking alot of emotion. Sometimes it might be a line from a song, the subject of it or relating it to a time or place.I wonder, if I could have a soundtrack to my life, what it would be?xx Salina

Whenever I hear Huey Lewis & The News - Hip To Be Square or Geneis - In The Air Tonight or Sussudio... I think of American Psycho... and I only wish I had an axe. When I hear singin' in the rain, I feel a violent oncoming rage courtesy of A Clockwork Orange... not that any of these violent feelings are by any means a bad thing. I'm learning to enjoy them quite a lot actually. Though I have to admit, personally, when I think of Salina, I think of a very old sold called Suffocate Me by a band called Angelfish which was technically Shirley Manson's first band, before she was in Garbage... and its by far one of the most beautiful and mournful songs I have ever heard. I mean I can't think of a soundtrack to my life in terms of genre, chronology or lyrical craftsmanship... it seems cruel to pick just one of those qualifiers... but I had a discussion with a friend about songs I want played at my funeral, and I think I was only allowed three. I think I decided on Depeche Mode - Blasphemous Rumours, The Rolling Stones - Paint It Black and Johnny Cash - The Man Comes Around, then again I'm a pretty morbid asshole at the best of times. Maybe Jesus Don't Want Me For A Sunbeam by The Vaselines... but seriously? death ain't the time to be making enemies... Let me think on this a minute Sal, I'm not gonna rattle off 32 songs but Sonic Youth - Kool Thing, KISS - Hotter Than Hell and Adam & The Ants - Physical seem to leap to mind pretty quick (even if I like the NIN cover better) ... and if there's time, KMFDM - Hole In The Wall pretty much says it all :-)... man I haven't heard that for ages...

I'm not sure how many people will respond as it can be quite a personal thing to put out there for everybody to see.Who wants to tell everybody what can make them sad when we're trying to show off our positive selves? .I agree with KD. Certainly I have different feelings about some songs (and I definitely have a greater understanding of and like for others) because of experiences I've had in my life.I don't NOT listen to certain songs though as those emotions can change over time, to the point where you can enjoy them again without negative connotations..The one song I couldn't listen to without tearing up until' last year? "Easy Silence" by the Dixie Chicks.I loved it until it was played during the picture slideshow at my Mother's funeral in 2008. Now I can listen to it (though there is still some sadness) and appreciate it again. .Cheers.Rusty

Too many songs to list. A few entire albums and even the mention of one massive group who are always playing on the radio, etc. Some surprisingly poignant lyrics from the largely tongue-in-cheek band Machine Gun Fellatio: You've ruined all my favourite songs'cause every one reminds meof another time when you and I belonged

I don't think I would say any song has ever been ruined...as in I would prefer not to hear it or brings up a painful memory. If anything, songs bring out very powerful emotion whether I am playing them on my guitar or simply whilst listening. The old dichotomy...an memory recalled with the familiarity of a painful experience or a painful memory recalled of an experience from my past. | There are some that I have certainly dedicated that I will rarely if ever play for anyone other than myself...or someone very close that would understand the intimacy. | Music is an expression of life...and how you choose to live it.
