Second Hand Nos

February 21 2016

It's all in the heading and imagination is the key. What wouldn't you buy second hand? The thought came up after a talk with the Mr about him needing a new phone. Finding an unlocked one at the price we want has proven difficult, so I briefly thought about buying one secondhand... and then went on to think about the failures of people I know who have tried the same thing. I can think of a whole heap more but I'll see what you guys come up with and come back then. 🍑 Peachy ㋡

I certainly wouldn't buy second hand clothes and shoes! That is one reason and I don't need to expand on the why 😛 Another reason is, I am a big supernatural and paranormal phenomenon believer where I get anxious about whom had worn that clothes/shoes before they made it to the second hand shop! Call me paranoid, but I rather be cautious than sorry because, I would be the only person to live with the consequences if any paranormal phenomenon happened to me! Yep, I know the non-believers of paranormal phenomenon would be laughing their heads off at my second reason, but I don't care as it is not my business that they choose to be ignorant! 😛 - Posted from rhpmobile

All I buy atm are second hand cothes from OP shops. A wash and iron and they are good to go. I often get complimented on my dresses and they all cost 8 dollars. I cant afford to buy clothes from the big stores now but even before when I could, I still liked to look in the OP shops and would often find some really nice retro stuff. I recently bought a second hand lounge suite which was in great condition. I might not buy second hand electrical goods.....you can buy a new microwave for fifty bucks so Id rather go for new in that department.

I frequently buy second hand. Almost all the furniture in my house is second hand, picked up from garage sales or pay it forward groups. Some of my favourite clothes are second hand buys. I love items with character, and history. Yes, you run a risk of buying other people's issues, especially with technology, but I'm ok with that, especially if there's a significant saving to be made! - Posted from rhpmobile

You can build an entire house, and in the case of in Albury, a uni campus, from second hand and reclaimed materials. The only major thing I have bought new was my bed & mattress (Aussie made quality for errmm... longevity?) Having said that a well looked after and/or barely used bed/mattress I could have dealt with.

Haha i'll go with secondhand men, waste not want not. I don't care if another woman has thrown him to the kerb, roadside pickup lol, one person's trash is another person's treasure. Summer, YOU might not mind a secondhand coffin, you'd be dead lol, you won't be able to smell the last occupant 😂😂 as for me, I buy everything secondhand, I pick up the most amazing bargains. Even furniture, but all my clothes, lots of the things I find still have the tags on so not worn but that's just a bonus. I love saving money this way, i'm cheap to keep, actually cheap in many ways 👅👍

Thanks Sweetgem, I have to respect that POV. Energy is something I accept we don't have a huge understanding of yet. The world is a place of wonder, with a huge amount we don't understand. .I have a fondness for second hand products, so a very big interest in the overall outlooks. :-) That chance to get that special piece that I would not have had the chance to have otherwise is a moment to be seized at times. Yes, no coffin sharing, I agree Summer! Can you imagine that moment when you turn over in your grave?... I love your current pic Koko, is that a piece you've purchased secondhand? Electrics are a big be careful on my list, with no warranty there is no confidence. Not that there's a whole lot of confidence with warranties these days. But still. I still remember that secondhand fridge that decided to stop working while I was away from home way back when. And the washing machine before that. Mind you the microwave we spent months trying to get fixed till they told us it was out of warranty is a special memory. They replaced it in the end. hehe. Peachy

I love second hand furniture - I like things that are well made and have a history. After having just recently having moved house myself and done some culling I also like to know that some of my things are going to new homes rather than being simply discarded. Sometimes our society is too throw-away. Having said that I wouldn't buy electronics second hand. I'm pretty fussy and generally like mine new and shiny!

Here's a list of what I wouldn't buy second hand 1) toilet paper 😀 2) tampons, not that I need them much anymore, though I do find when I have lots of sex, it tricks my body and I have periods again. Which would explain why I haven't had one for a while 😢 3) phone, not sure if I'd buy one second hand but there's no way I'd sell my phone on to anyone else, they'd never need to watch porn again 😊 4) god, I'm struggling here. Aside from consumables, not much is off limits. I even bought a meat thermometer second hand, you know the one you put up the turkey's bum lol okay well maybe not but I didn't know that 😂😂😂 it was in it's packaging so not used but bought from an op shop for 2 bucks. I also love old towels. Weird I know, but I love vintage beach towels. Salvos will usually have towels heavily bleached so hygienic. I love the beautiful faded colours and scratchy feel, like a fetish really lol 😁 electronics I have bought stuff but be prepared for them not to work and check on their returns policy. I recently bought a set of Bluetooth speakers so I could send music from my phone to them. Bought from salvos, tagged as tested and working, but here's the thing, they test to see if it powers up, but that doesn't mean it works. So the red light came on but nothing else happened, no music 😢 op the only other issue I personally would have with buying a second hand phone is where it came from, is it stolen. So many phones get stolen and the second hand market probably supports that, just a thought but that's just me 😃

I returned a vibrator to an adult shop, used lol the bloody battery kept going flat 😊 funny that 😏someone else had probably used it before I bought it 😀 that would happen a lot. Lot of the toys come in packaging that looks sealed but it just pulls apart. The girl in the shop was taking different ones out of the packaging for me to test (putting back in when done), well not properly tested lol, but lots of buzzing and giggles 😉 Mine is a silver bullet water proof obviously, easy to wash, hopefully was new but one never knows. I think they'd sell the used ones on 😕

sweetgem: is it only clothes, or other things? like houses or cars? (I'm not generally into all that stuff... but then I have directly observed things in a house that suggests there are ghosts) I_touch: why would they get your dirty pictures if they bought the phone? you can easily wipe phones completely, and phone theft is pointless in Australia since we have a block register - if a phone is stolen you can give them the IMEI (a unique ID every phone has) of the phone and it can be blocked, if it is on that register it won't work as a phone on any network anywhere in the world.

I tend to buy many things second hand for different reasons. To get quality at a much cheaper price is probably the main one. I love buying used instruments for that warmth of sound that takes so long to build to when buying new. I have one rule when going second hand and that is if I am not familiar with the pros and cons of things eg; cars and engines (no idea about those things) I will find someone I know who has good knowledge of the item I am looking at and get them to have a look at the item for me. Nothing worse than buying something you think may be good but is crap because you didn't have a clue about how to tell what from what.

Sheets and towels. When you stay in hotels, do you take your own? Just wondered 😀 All my sheets and bedlinen is now second hand but I shop around and spend a lot of time looking to find the quality and colors I want and they are perfectly clean. I wash them all again when I get home but they've already been washed. How is that different to staying in a hotel, worse I would think with different people doing whatever on those sheets every night. I respect your opinion of course but think about the logic behind your decision. 2 main reasons I buy bed linen second hand. Firstly I hate the feel of the new fabrics, that kind of shiny satin feel, yuck, and thin, not good quality. I like crisp cotton sheets, love jumping into clean crisp sheets makes me so horny, especially when I'm just showered and shaved mmm the other main reason is the size of my mattress. Though it's queensize it's a really deep mattress, the deepest you can buy I would think, they do make sheets to fit but they're hard to find, expensive and no choice of colors when I do find them. I like pale greens and blues to compliment my doona covers, also second hand, like to have it looking summery and fresh. My bedlinen is used and so am I 😁 but we both don't disappoint 😉

....a second-hand fridge or freezer. As I work away and live alone, if that fridge dies while I'm away, I could be coming home to quite a mess...not a risk I want to take. However, I bought a second-hand washing machine for $120 off Gumtree....a huge, family sized Westinghouse with a tiny piece of the plastic lid broken off. It must have been worth well over a thousand when new and 3 years later it's still going strong.Bargain! I have several motorbikes...I just sold one...that were mostly bought secondhand. I recently bought another for the same price as the one I sold...the perfect swap. A bike I wasn't riding for one that I can't ride enough. As they're often recreational vehicles only, mileages can be very low for age with bikes. The one I just sold had done only 4000km's in the last 4 years. Not unusual. I'm all for adopting second-hand pets also...animals need love too. I would if I could.

I would NEVER had touched anything second hand (snob) But I love unique pieces and the idea of something being rescued and used or repurposed. We throw away everything these days and it's such a waste of resources. I bought a lovely Queen Anne table full of dents and covered in scratches and glass rings. It had a little chunk of timber missing from the side and the lady I bought it from kept trying to make it clear that the table wasn't able to be restored and resold for a lot of money because of this "flaw." I bought it because I love it as it is. It makes me think about all the dinner parties and family meals it's served. And how many fights, laughs and discussions it's been privy to. Some things money just can't buy. - Posted from rhpmobile

if there is something I don't need and the product is meant to be used again (condoms are OBVIOUSLY one time use only - you cannot use it twice!) then I prefer giving it away to someone rather than throwing it out. I either donate it charity, or give it to a friend who needs it or might sell it for a small amount - just last week I sold a pair of designer sunglasses I bought in Florida to a lady for 5AUD - she was on the market for that design and I got the peace of mind that it went to someone who would actually use it. Sadly - computers are a different story..I have a laptop that I have not used for 3years now (and the laptop itself is about 6years old) but still works..whilst it is not the latest model it could benefit someone less fortunate yet I cannot even donate it as charities don't take laptops (primarly because they cannot sell it)..and i am not clever enough to know how to take out the hard drive..it has been formatted but that is only 50% safety :(

But I happen to know of someone who bought a second hand iPhone. They had it for a year and then bought a new phone. Asked a phone kiosk to transfer everything from the old phone to the new phone. Somehow his 165 photos turned into 224 photos......the extra photos were of the pedo kind!!! Kiosk phoned police and they were arrested. Turns out you can hide photos on phones. When they upgraded his phone, up came the photos. Luckily he was cleared but it wasn't before a huge and upsetting run over the coals. It's scary he had such a traumatic experience as a result of saving money on a phone. The worst part was making him look at the photos.

We had a fridge for years that I hated, it was one that had the bars exposed on the back which would collect fluff and dust. I longed for it to come to an unfortunate demise but the bloody thing just kept on going, was stuck with it for over 20 years. We bought a large old fridge as a beer fridge to put on the back verandah many many moons ago. Paid $100, it looked like a wreck but it had character, someone had painted 'give me another' in big messy print across the door. People we bought it off were leaving town but told us they could never get it cold enough. A quick adjustment and we had ice cold beer, again for probably 15 years then when we left, we sold it for the same amount lol bloody bargain My current fridge was bought second hand last year, stainless steel finish, the guy had barely used it, quite new and sold it on really cheap to get a bigger fridge. It's awesome and only cost about $150 from memory We should start up a swapmeet on here, I'm looking for a new car features I'm looking for are a good sound system, a comfie back seat and a hot guy in it. Not too much to ask is it?

Is a huge beach towel I've had for close to 30 years that I got secondhand, lol. The poor thing is on it's last legs, even after all the love and careful attention I've given it over the years. It's been there for so many memorable experiences, even when I was ill, lol. I've never seen another towel to compare until I agreed on the spur of the moment to rehome a big bag of towels last week. I buy second hand clothes I was in my local op shop a while ago. It's staffed by retired ladies who are so much fun to talk to. I'd been looking round and one of them was talking to the other about a 'plastic necklace'. She couldn't work out how to close it. She liked it but i must have lost it's fastenings. As I walked by I didn't have the heart to tell her that it was a sting of anal beads. Needless to say I didn't buy them. s
