Selfies,insidious or just harmless fun?

April 23 2014

Face booking, instagraming, snapshoting,is it making us more self aware or self obsessed?....... Are we becoming narcissists, gazing at our images ,sharing them with the world, and really does anyone else care? Or am I. just an antidiluvian cynic?...xx Q

For myself, at my age, I can't do selfies, it seems contrived and cringe worthy.I don't care what others do. Perhaps its a form of self expression or necessity.Live and let live I say. Cheers N

Seems to me.... that the RHP selfie a fairly predictable formula.... of only two angles.

The first known selfie, was of a man on an ABC national radio forum. They still can't find him.

It's my job to be social media savvy, I'm in marketing and I have several accounts across the board. I see the selfie as the self absorbed tween/teen domain, I observe the self absorbed said tweens, I watch the trolls, but I must say there is an amazing place for social media. From the quirky, like a random person sitting on a roof listening to a couple break up tweeting it live #rooftopbreakup to watching Q & A with my twitter account open. It's good and bad. Facetube has hit its Zenith, it's all about to change and grow. I'm excited to be riding the crest of that wave. It's all the same though, in my day before the internet, that chick posting all of those selfies just wore a lower cleavage and her lipstick was redder. As Circus says. Our mediums simply change... What's that Meme? I'm glad I got through my teens before the internet....

there is a fine line. some people just choose to get a sports car and set up a ramp and sail over that line and leave it for dead. I don't see a problem with taking selfies in moderation, some people aren't going to get themselves photographed too many other ways and the technology in phones allows that to occur. that being said......I have no idea how the "Duckface" ever became popular or any pout for that matter. I look at it and all I can think in my head is quack quack. If it was for one or two pics hey fine I can handle that but some people it is a career and the only "blue steel" that they got in their posing repertoire. ......and GYM selfies.....oh my god really?! I keep fit and healthy and gym and do weights but I don't feel the desire to post my miniscule gains every 5 seconds. that's really tacky and downright narcissictic. I applaud someones dedication and for them to be feeling great about themselves but when u are bombarded on the daily with their gym pump u really do tend to care less. Gimme an update every couple months or so and I will give u the praise and motivation to continue if you are gonna do a selfie just make sure it is you. Handsome, attractive, svelt, gorgeous, a visionary; YOU and your own trademark smile. no other fluff. that's who people want to see

Only pics I've ever taken of myself in the last ten years are on here, with the exception of one I took while in hospital recently. Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest etc. are not my thing. I have a Twitter account, but have never tweeted anything. I think I'm boring enough people on here, so I'll leave the real world in peace. BC (fuck that makes you sound ancient!), here's a selfie just for you.

Selfies are for teens but thats only my opinion. When I look at some of the the selfies on here it sometimes makes me cringe. Especially the flexed up gut pulled in type of shot.. All too obvious and if I can see it so can others. If you look like that all the time it wouldnt be too bad. Seeing a female or a male with a naturally nice body is nice in anybodies eyes, just preferably not a selfie.. Sometimes selfies are the only way a person can get hold of a pic without showing thier identity. Not the best of looks when your trying to sell yourself... Specially the guys with their dick pics.

I think I have been on rhp for a few more years than you Barefoot Contessa and have posted more than my fair shareof topics prior to your time. Like selfies....there is a limit to how many positions you can take a pic from, there are only so many ways and slants to pose a topic. I dont feel the need to ask a lot these days.

what's the rule on how to greet those who spent more time than me on this site? Is it one deep bow for every 12 months of difference?..
