So what's the deal with WARNING: Any institutions using this site or any of its associated sites

October 27 2014

Over the years I have seen variations to this on profiles. Is there substance behind this or is it just some urban myth? I figure that even with the warning there wouldn't be much you could really do? Your thoughts?

Dom,the people who put that there have an inflated view of how interesting they are....or at least their profiles.

Makes me think those members are extremely gullible. Two words: Ethics Committee.

Not everyone can be an expert in everything. Not everyone knows the law. Or how institutions operate etc. But ... many people are concerned about the security of their information and photos. It's not that unexpected that people would copy something another person has done, if it seems that 'something' might offer privacy/protection at law. Most people are just doing the best they can with the knowledge they have. Be kind folks. - Posted from rhpmobile

There's no substance behind it. As Meander pointed out university research these days has to go through rigorous ethics approval before it can be done, which includes explicitly addressing issues of disclosure, privacy, and consent when the study involves human subjects. There are no universities accessing people's RHP profiles and pics to publish in nefarious secret research. And anyway, maybe someone who knows a lot more about law than I do can clarify, but I don't see how putting a statement like that on your profile can give you any sort of actual legal protection.

Couples with young family or public figures perhaps may feel more need of such warnings, other may find difficult to appreciate their concerns. I think it can be judgemental to point to a single reason why people put in warnings but in general most warnings are useless including warnings to block etc.. The reason is people whom you want to warn don't care about it and people who don't need to be warned find it irritating. My suggestion is put only useful warnings. Keep it to the point without jargon. Put it in the beginning of profile where it has better chance to be read.

It has been a while since we had edited our profile so had to check if we even had the institution warning up.Turns out we don't but can fully understand the peoples reasoning that do have it there. Some people choose to have clear face pics on their public gallery some don't.Some people could not give a toss who knows they are on here. It is more for our childrens sake that we keep this weekend lifestyle hidden from anyone in our real/normal lives and prefer it to stay that way.I understand there are ethics committees in place but I also know that phone tapping is also illegal, yet still happens .We all leave ourselves open to the world when we put pictures or private information here.It is a risk we have undertaken but we still try to reduce that risk with the best tools we have.If that means someone be they gullible or not, feeling a little bit more at ease after putting a warning up then good for them.Mr Luvsilver

Why would I find it for you Inspirit? Although I think Gazpacho51 started a thread about this not that long ago but I can't remember what the consensus was.

its an urban myth that if you put that there it helps or something. I am sure at some point somewhere there was a shred of truth in that Sydney uni was doing something with checking sexual preferences and its just propagated since...

Whenever I find that Warning, am usually not surprised to find reference within their profile to being "proffessional [sic]".....

that the statement may put off honest people, but as we all know, less than honest people will still do what they want to do. Regardless of any contained statement, if someone wants to use our information for some purpose other than for what was intended, it will end up being used anyway. The only thing I can say is just try to be careful about what you put up, within reason. Tall

Quoting 'Jack_Denials'it's so easy to cut'n'paste. I see so many that end with "and I advise all of you to do the same" or something like that. People just copy the warning with that sentence included, not thinking about it. If it's on the internet it must be true, right?
