Swinging is another name for swapping.. You know keys, wives, husbands, partners, body fluids That type of thing Also named after mood swings. When one has had enough of their patners moods, they swing/swap for a new one. Lol! Ms Foxy

Lol swapping when sick of the partners moods, most times the males would be left home..😳😳. I have heard of swapping, keys etc but where did the swinging term come from? I don’t remember hearing about the swing chair in the 80s

to the best of my very limited knowledge the term was coined from and during the 'swinging 60's" which obviously referred to the 1960's rise of popular music. However, it was also a popular pastime to men to chuck their keys (motel, hotel, car or house keys) into a bowl and women would draw them out and go with whoever owned the keys. Rude, naughty people but it is what it is babe. Now you just get online or via app and arrange a root lol. Technology huh?

Not sure, but I really like anti's definition! It just sits well with me 😊 People have been doing this for centuries, we tend to forget that... I've heard it mentioned that "modern swinging" as we know started in the US army bases during the Second World War as a way of looking after fellow servicemens wives when husbands were away! Probably complete bull shit, but a nice thought. I think if my history knowledge is half way correct it was grounds for court marshal if your wife stayed!

Yes always lots of stories, like they talk about leaving the washing powder OMO in the window to say when “Old Man Overseas” Some will be true some false but why let the truth get in the way of a good story 🤔🤔😂

with Bianca. My memories seems to refer it back to the carefree days of the 'swinging 60's", when there were no second thoughts about having casual and plentiful sex... Tall

jkst55, completely agree it's a great conversation starter! I love history and people's read on how things started no matter the topic... you've got to admit it's better than, "how's the weather?" A good yarn is the Aussie way 😬 Tall, makes a lot of sense! The introduction of the birth control pill and the liberties that came with it. Don't know about the idea of key parties.... wonder if you avoided the Volvo keys 😳

Quoting 'kjst55' Yes always lots of stories, like they talk about leaving the washing powder OMO in the window to say when “Old Man Overseas” Some will be true some false but why let the truth get in the way of a good story 🤔🤔😂 I like this one, but always believed it was "Old Man Out", not overseas. As for the guys, just turn the OMO box up side down to say "Old Woman Out". OMO, so versatile.

This may interest you. The meaning of the word ‘swing’ and ‘swinger’ have gone through several metamorphoses in the last century or so. The following is the earliest reference I could find in a respectable source for the origin of the word ‘swing.’: “Swing . . . . almost certainly was southern black slang for sex long before the turn of the century” (Rawson). So, form whatever mental picture you wish – this was in all likelihood the root of the expression ‘swinger.’ By 1918 ‘swing’ was used as a verb meaning to perform very well as a good jazz musician does.<“It is appropriate that gifted, gravel-voiced Herschel Bernardi should swing eight times a week in this particular hit.”—Walter Wager>. In the 1930s and 1940s ‘swing’ developed into a style of jazz played by big bands. By about 1935 ‘swing’ had become a verb at first meaning to play music in the style of swing jazz, but then more generally to have a ‘strong but easy and pleasant impetus.’ <“Chaucer and jazz are quite similar; they both swing, they both have the same punch, vitality, and guts.”—‘Jazz World’>. By 1957 swing which had begun as Black English for having a good time, enjoying oneself to the extreme, as at a party, had begun to come into general use. And this was the meaning of the expression that I was familiar with at the time, and believe was most familiar to the general public. By the mid 1960s the meaning of ‘swing’ had branched off in two directions, and the associated ‘swinger’ had two meanings. The only one I, and probably most, were familiar with at the time was ‘the sense of a person who is lively in an unrestrained way.’ A very popular car in the 1960s was the ‘Dodge Swinger’ and I owned one. Also in the mid sixties ‘to swing’ came to mean to have sex. But the more conservative meaning of swing was far, far more well-known and Dodge, I’m sure, wouldn’t have made the disastrous faux-pas of naming their car ‘swinger’ if that expression had be generally recognized at the time it was introduced as: One who engaged in promiscuous sex with various partners (either serially, or all at once) and/or engaged in husband-and-wife swapping parties, and/or bisexual activity).<“The sexual revolution is not new; people have been swinging as long as they are on this earth.”—Rona Jaffe>. By the end of the 1970s, though, most people were aware of the second meaning of ‘swinger.’ And I don’t believe that, the Dodge Swinger ever made it into the 1980s. A few related ‘swinger’ expressions are/were (some are dated): ‘swing both ways’– bisexual; ‘swing party’– three or more swingers get together (i.e. an orgy); Plato’s retreat, a ‘swingers club’ in New York City, featured 20 ‘mini-swing’ rooms, each able to accommodate one to three couples; unmarried, or single swingers, were known as ‘swingles’ and made the ‘swingle scene’ at ‘swingle bars’ (which were indistinguishable from ‘singles bars’). A typical 1970s swinger’s ad read: “VERY INTERESTING MARRIED young cpl in 30s seek attr cpls versatile gals extra select males for discreet friendship and swinging fun. No fatties weirdos.” (‘Ace,’ circa 1976) (Chapman’s Dictionary of American Slang, Barnhart Concise Dictionary of Etymology, Cassell’s Dictionary of Slang, Rawson’s Dictionary of Euphemisms and Other Doubletalk)

I thought most backgrounding research did suggest the development of swapping etc during World War 2 and American defence force families. It seemed to be a situation where death was perhaps imminent or likely for the men, statistically speaking, and bonds grew around this fragility of life in wartime that transcended the normal acceptable routines. But of course with living witnesses basically gone and probably done somewhat secretively anyway, it would be hard to definitely confirm how widespread this was. Of course the 60s and 70s could also have latched onto previous ideas and grew them further.

It’s because ...... To move from one direction to its opposite. swing implies a movement of something attached at one end or one side. To sway, vibrate or even waver. To move from one direction to its opposite. Swing can be a noun, verb or even a adjective Stay safe and keep smiling
