I’m certain everyone’s wish list for a perfect venue will vary . As we all seek different things, our wish lists will differ greatly . Our perfect venue is an unpretentious bar type situation with a relaxed , sexy , no pressure environment. The no pressure part meaning no pressure ‘to dress down ‘ at a certain time with the freedom to do so if you want . We have been to events where the clock strikes 10 pm and it’s dress down time or you must vacate . Not wanting to seem shallow, some form of dress code would be in place . When co hosting an event in Melbourne we put this in place . People were arriving in tracksuits and gym gear with no intention of getting changed once arriving . Sexy looking people that make an effort create a seductive environment. A venue with clean separate play areas . Somewhere privacy is assured if wanted . A club the offers different nights. For us a night where limited single guys were allowed to attend . I realise that for this to be successful , safe and ‘no seagull on a chip ‘ issues occurring this requires a vetting process which takes time and a lot of effort . We love the idea of a bar where we can meet like minded friends or have first time meets in a safe space . Melbourne has recently opened ‘Between Friends ‘wine bar that seem to fit the bill but they allow no single guys . I wish them success in these uncertain times . Ax

To clarify, and I don’t know if this is a COVID related issue or not, but the atmosphere felt a little flat and there weren’t very many people out. We have been to Taboo twice and Mike’s once so far. We aren’t hardcore clubbers, as such, so it’s a genuine question, in that we don’t know what attracts people to venues.

We have yet to actually go to a swingers venue yet I (husband) have always found that when looking on line (I have not done exhaustive research) that the clubs always look a bit like someone has dressed up their living room and converted a garage. I'm sure they are lovely places and I'm doing them a disservice and it's more about the people you meet, yet for us, somewhere that has a nice evening sexy cocktail bar feel to it. Relaxed, chilled music, well dressed staff and no pressure to get your kit off. I suppose we view them more as places to meet sexy people seeking same and not so much places to play or get naked. But that's likely because we've not been to one yet and we're still at step one in terms of clubs!!.

Between friends in Melbourne has the set up right. Nice wine bar downstairs, clean play areas upstairs, casual vibe with no enforced ‘dress down’ time. Have been couple times

Designing: I would at least have the place licensed and registered, as well as a checkin or a scan code to monitor people coming/going and covid policies in place to keep customers safe. The last thing you want is, The venue to hit the newspaper headlines, being a covid hot spot (on government websites as a place not registered) and draw negative public attention to the venue. Can you imagine the uproar from the vanilla community! I also have real concerns of those hosting back yard swinging events/parties with no registers or covid plans in place. I'm talking about those backyard places where hosts call themselves "a swinger venue", which they aren't but just a dirty, grooty garage, not registered or a licensed venue. Makes me cringe and sick just thinking about it and typing. 🤢🤮🤮🤮 Ms Foxy

We find that most of the Australian Swingers Clubs / Venues leave a lot to be desired with regards the standard of the decor & facilities etc. For us, it is always about the venue, the way it is furnished, the lighting, the mood, the music, the ambience & setting. There needs to be an element of fantasy. It needs to be different and better than home. For example , think of Crown Casino, or any well appointed casino, cocktail bar & nightclub & restaurant . The really nice ones have gone to a lot of trouble with regards their look & feel. They are glitzy & sparkly . They are carefully designed to help you live the fantasy, lose track of time and be more inclined to part with your money. If a casino / cocktail bar / nightclub was fitted out like an average suburban house or garage, there would not be that glitzy, sophisticated sexy appeal would there? Why would one bother going there ? One of us designed a sex / swingers club in another country. It was spread over 2 levels. It had a well appointed glitzy & intimate cocktail bar . Lots of mirrors, subdued strip & accent lighting, luxurious finishes. A mirror ball, dance floor & pole . A place to flirt, tease & seduce one another. The club had a well appointed indoor heated swimming pool & spa. Beautifully designed along the lines of a spa within a high end resort. Towels & gowns for the patrons. There were several themed play rooms within the club. For example there was an Egyptian Room whose walls were adorned with hand painted Egyptian hieroglyphs. There was an altar , there was a decorative Sarcophagus standing in a corner. It’s lid was hinged and you could step inside, close the lid and poke your bits through its glory hole . There was a room decorated to look like the galaxy . Stars & planets painted on its dark walls, it’s ceilings with hundreds of built in twinkling starlights. The soft furnishings on which to play were soft & sumptuous. There was a BDSM room, in black faux leather with all the accessories. There was a mirror room with all walls & ceilings completely mirrored. There were open rooms and lockable private rooms. Obviously a lot of time had gone into the design and the budget spared no expense with regards the quality of the fitout, the lighting, the decor, the choice of materials and finishes. The result was a beautifully designed club that enveloped ones senses. This allowed the attendees to slip into / emmerse themselves in whatever fantasy tickled their fancy . Call it escapism as it’s best. When in the club, the real outside world (and its worries & stresses) paled into insignificance. We have been to several swingers clubs here in Australia. The one that has gone to the most effort insofar it’s decor, facilities & appointment, is the one in Collingwood Melbourne. There are some dreadful ones like the one in the run down clapped out weatherboard house in Resevoir that was named after a high heel shoe. It boasted great music and a state of the art sound system (that turned out to be a portable CD player on top of the fridge in the kitchen ) Dirty stained mattresses on the floor in a room indicated a play area . Where is the fantasy in all that? We have tried a few suburban house parties. Again badly appointed, suburban, zero ambience (besides the neighbours dogs barking and their kids screaming ) We tried the new “wine bar come swingers club” in Balaclava Vic Melbourne. Tucked away in an alleyway next to a parking lot, it could very have well been a garage / automotive workshop conversion . Upon arrival you pay your $85 fee at the door . The reception desk cum bar is within 2M of the glass front doors. This doubles up as an area for staff to prepare your plates of cheese , salami, olives etc. There is no kitchen . All snacks are prepared at this bar . In other words no sexy bar to sit at and flirt. The venue is open plan . Painted concrete floors . Faux leather / vinyl Chesterfield sofas, uncomfortable chairs and tables, bad lighting , not enough soft fabrics / furnishings as a result of which the venue is very loud and echoey. Nothing sexy nor intimate about it. Not like a classy cocktail bar where you can flirt, tease & seduce one another. On the same ground floor are 2 toilets . Again rough painted concrete floor - difficult to clean & remove urine splashes (toilets shared for male & female and so urine splatter on the toilet seats) The hand wash basins are in a common area in view of the rest of the club - people drinking & chatting have a view of you washing your hands . The play areas are upstairs. A very steep timber staircase ( completely against Aus Standards / Australian Building Code ) takes you upstairs to a carpeted play area . All open plan . One more toilet and a shower cubicle upstairs. There were one or two lockable play rooms. The play areas were directly above the main area below . Their floors in carpet over timber . The result was that all the noise downstairs (60 + people crammed into the echoey venue all talking very loudly ) wafted through the floors into the upstairs play areas. Not conducive to playing . Again no fantasy. The entire place was cheaply appointed / furnished & finished. Poorly executed . Poor quality . Amateurish. It was like playing in a very loud and busy coffee shop . Just did not work. We finished our wine and our antipasto platter and left .

I’ve only been to a club once with a fwb who was exploring with me at the time and we did not enjoy ourselves. It seemed like a tight-knit inner circle of regulars and we were outsiders. But we had gone to an event at someone’s house which was awesome, and I had been to events at people’s homes prior with my ex. Always a great experience socially and sexually. They were invite only and everyone was respectful and if anyone was not they were asked to leave immediately. $100 or couple. The best one I went to was about half first timers and someone was hired to do some light fetish stuff with anyone wanting to try. It was a good vibe.

We’ve been to pretty much most venues in Melbourne and for us Between Friends has the right mix of social and play. However as with meeting people, everyone has different tastes and what we love, some might not. We have been to parties where you have to dress down from the start and some where you have to dress down at a specific time. As stated by someone else, at BF you don’t ever have to dress down. However you can not go upstairs to play areas fully clothed. We are happy to dress down but we find that for newcomers this is a lot less stressful. There is no pressure to get undressed if they don’t want to. But as stated, it’s all personal opinion and we don’t go by other peoples opinions on places. We love Between Friends and have met many amazing people there 😉
