As always, they focus on sensationalism to grab attention to sell their product. All this at the expense of family and friends that have done no wrong and leave the innocent persons life remembered for all the wrong reasons. I have been on the wrong end of their lack of writing tact on the odd occasion many years ago and I note nothing has changed. My feelings are that if one of them was on fire, seriously wouldnt bother pissing on them.

How much are the press responsible for setting values? As responsible as we have let them become. I do not think it wise to let any industry regulate itself. I feel that their core standards need to be updated and reviewed. Are they a reflection of society or do they manipulate it to their own views.? When i take into consideration that two private companies (News corp and Fairfax) reach an estimated 86% of the population, i do not think that it is a reflection of society ( letters to the editor excluded) i think its a reflection of the views, ideals, and morality of those two companies. Are the days of headline journalism at an end? In my opinion, Not by a long shot, but we could hope that it's in it's death throws. We as a species have a long way to go before all people can live together in total trust and respect, on a planet that is clean, abundant and healthy.

It's worrying because people are pack animals and emotions/beliefs can be contagious. I think it's really a case of one step forward 2 steps back as well... Emma Watson did so brilliantly with her speech and campaign and now this brings equality for all (well in western countries anyway) back 2 steps... Sad 😶 Xxviolet

The Courier Mail's reporting was absolutely sickening. But unfortunately, also not surprising from the Murdoch media house of trash. I hold the mainstream media in this country - dominated as it is by entities owned by selfish, morally bankrupt billionaires - partially responsible for the very questionable direction this country is heading in.

News Corp made a deliberate decision to dumb down the Courier Mail (further) when they replaced the last editor in chief with the editor of the Gold Coast Bulletin. It has degenerated into sensationalist trash and abandoned any attempt at impartial reporting. The article on the murder suicide is just another unfortunate example of this gutter journalism. It is not a reflection of the community, particularly the New Farm community (where the murder occurred) which is inclusive and tolerant of diversity.

Many governments of both perswasions have shut down Mental Health Facilities were this guy would have most likely been, receiving the help he needed. There was a case in VIC recently, the guy stabbed 2 police and they shot him dead. I also would have done that to protect myself. Jeff Kennett closed most of these facilities in VIC and rehoused the ppl in high rise housing commission blocks all together and unsupervised. They now wander around aimlessly with little or no help for there mental health problems, nobody deserves to be treated this way, most often they are ppl who can't afford proper medical help. Sure he got us out of debt, but at what price in the future. There is no such thing as a "free lunch". Check out the rising youth unemployment in the outer "povo" suburbs, it is rising steadily, but in the inner "wealthy" suburbs it is decreasing, Kennett and other Liberal Gov's closed a lot of schools in the outer suburbs, they are now being replaced with "Super Schools" that have up to 1200 students. The poor and unfortunate are slipping thru the "cracks", instead of having 10% unemployed, we as a nation will end up with 10% "unemployable". Our Poli's go O/S and witness these mistakes and we follow the same trends? Cheers P.L.

I think Mado was trying to display another example of gross generalisation and how boring and unintelligent it can be with no merit and shows how low a reporter/journalist/misogynist will go. Personally I think it shows that those reporters are untalented hacks. Having said that, Jay_Me's comment didn't surprise me though.

I would be interested to know what young people - teenagers and people in their 20's - think of these sorts of stories? Are they more worldly and see it for the sensationalist rubbish that it is? In all honesty, I think they are aiming at people who read the newspapers such as men in Jay_Me's age group. Do you think?

I don't keep up with the news any more. They tell us what they want us to believe and I am sick of current affairs programs scaremongering with their sensational reporting. The story that made me turn the television off was ACA reporting that you can die from using non stick cookware. I was pretty over being told I am going to die of something everyday, I would rather get on with living. I haven't really seen anything on this particular story, I only know of it so I can't comment on the reporting of it but it doesn't surprise me one little bit. It is sad and unfortunate for that poor woman and her family.

Between News and the shock jocks on talkback you have uninformed idiots peddling hate and bile to an even greater amount of uninformed idiots. A case in point the "terror" raids. 800 cops. 15 arrested. 1 charged. Nuts, sledgehammers etc. And don't forget the "sword" that was going to "behead" someone in Martin Place - made of plastic, it wouldn't have sliced a tomato - but hey the headlines were good, whipped the masses up into a frenzy and the THREAT was here ... ahhhh ... better rush through data retention laws quick whilst everyone's at fever pitch eh. You'll get much closer to the truth on Twitter or from independent sites like Independent Australia than from an organisation like News that hacks dead people's phones, almost kills off rugby league with super league then turns a blind eye to it's execs rotting a salary cap to ensure a franchise they own is successful (and thus they sell more Fox subscriptions and more herald sun papers). A filthy, grubby organisation.

But I would have made that very clear. PL, I don't understand what your post had to do with the OP? NudieRudie said it all, really. I stay away from a lot of media for this reason, but still get a lot of crap on Facebook that makes me ill. Only this morning: A woman fell pregnant by the male stripper at her hens do. The most emphasised part? The stripper was a little person. The white couple trying to have a baby that was given the wrong donor sperm? Dreadful, but so much more interesting because the donor is black AND the couple is lesbian. Would these two stories have made the media otherwise? I doubt it. I don't think the media reflects society as a whole, thank gods, or I would not want to be here anymore.

Has enabled the press, via print ,radio or tv, and enormous freedom to act in a totally irresponsible way. If people do not like what is being presented or the way it is portrayed it is quite simple to NOT read the paper, listen to the radio,or watch the tv. Taking away the ratings and popularity of these news portals will make the changes that are needed, but until then we get what we give. The OP has highlighted one particular case of very bad reporting but unfortunately it occurs far to often, yet we still enable it. It is OUR problem as a society to regulate things, as we are the people and we have the power, yet we are just to weak to use it correctly. Until we show those that want to dictate the way we base our morals and beliefs we will continue to be served this unacceptable journalism. Wasn't Mado giving an example of a manipulative piece of journalism, whether real or not, that twists our morals and beliefs? Looks like it worked.Mr J

The media is in the market to sell, in this case, Papers. If people stopped buying then they would stop reporting in this manner. Market forces at work. Question, who is more to blame, those that wrote it or those that buy the paper, thus ensuring this type of reporting will continue.

Until we show those that want to dictate the way we base our morals and beliefs we will continue to be served this unacceptable journalism. Many people are turning away from the Murdoch / Fairfax dominated mainstream media in favour of independent online media. But simple numbers are not the whole story and won't lead to significant change under current circumstances; you have to take into account that at the moment in this country we have a government that has incredibly close ties with and is extremely biased towards Murdoch media in particular, because it is basically the propaganda machine for the Liberal party. So the government does everything that they can to advantage Murdoch and put shackles on any other more impartial sources...the gutting of funding for the ABC being just one prime example. It is only thanks to the internet that independent sources have been able to gain some sort of foothold in presenting actual facts and alternative points of view, but then again with the new 'anti-terror' laws that have been passed and others that are in the pipeline (and will no doubt be passed due to the spineless Labor opposition led by Shorten), it doesn't take too much stretching of the imagination to see how they will be able to manipulate those laws to try and gag any sources and information that they don't want getting out. I don't think most Australians realise just what an insidious path we're heading down and how dangerous this government really is.

But we all have to take some personal responsibility because if we didn't buy papers and read or watch these stories, the media would very quickly stop producing them. Just like governments , we get the media we deserve.

The vast majority of journalism produced for Australians is pathetic and biased bit that's what the masses are after. SBS is the best Australian news but Al Jazeera and the BBC on the ABC 24 hour news channel are good too. I get most of my news and current affairs from various sites on the net now.

Journalism of today's variety is aimed at 1 aspect, that is, to cause controversy. Whether the media moguls agree with certain topics or not (although if news about them they will pull stories) is not the true outcome sought by their empires. It is to divide communities, create factional sides since they know with all the research into consumer psychology, that controversy sells. We wouldnt buy newspapers, watch television or peruse the internet about something we all agreed upon, it's boring and that doesnt sell. So they choose topics within topics that create emotions to boil, anger and fear are the biggest money earners for them. Another poor soul murdered by another soul that needed mental health intervention just doesn't create enough money for advertising these days and alongside will be some manufactured ad placed intentionally that will compliment the story. Just remember the press is advertising driven more than anything else....

Not to make a political argument, but why wouldn't the now Liberal government gut the funding to the labour parties propaganda machine, ABC.It really is that simple as people power. If the majority of people do not like the current government they will be replaced, if people do not support Murdoch press it will become defunk, if people do not watch tv it will change programming. So yes we have the power, we just need to use it.Cheers,Mr J.

You're ignoring a number of factors in the relationships between media and media ownership, community views / opinions, and politics / political opinions / election outcomes. But I doubt we will change each other's minds by continuing the discussion. Incidentally, the ABC isn't Labor's propaganda machine. The last review of whether there was political bias in its reporting actually found a slight lean to the right.

I suspect that the change in programming would not be a shift to higher quality, rather a shift towards further sensationalising the news headlines. Look at the path print media has taken. High quality sources that have always been niche markets and higher priced may not have changed (eg technical journals) but newspapers have been decimated by the changes in how we buy papers (and probably more so - by how we sell our stuff on ebay/gumtree and not in the classified ads) So... any thoughts on the new laws regarding publication of stories related to intelligence operations and jail time for journalists? I think it is reasonable to not be able to publish details on operations ahead of time, but I certainly think they should be able to be brought to light afterwards, not hidden forever.

Miss LD, and it is great that we can have an opinion in this great country of ours and I pray that we can uphold the conscience of the press to a more respectable level than what the Op illustrated. Cheers, Mr J. - Posted from rhpmobile
