Topping up the soul

July 20 2015

We all go through the peaks and lows of life, raising humans, working for the man, paying bills, day in day out. Rushing to make deadlines, keeping other ppl happy etc etc.Sometimes it can get monotonous and mundane and you get a bit flat. Need a recharge, need that something to feed the soul and give you that spring back in your step. Everyone should have that one thing that brings balance and peace back to their core.It could be sitting on a beach, riding a motorbike, climbing a certain hill, a special person or certain music.... Mine is a place I try and get to at least once a year. In my hometown, its a large tree on a property that I grew up around. It holds a lot of memories and secrets and I always feel energised, refocused and clear after Ive gone and sat under it for a little while.Even just thinking about it makes me stop and smile. So, what do you have that feeds and brings balance to your soul?

Books Music my parents cattle property lately I have a strong desire to go sit on a beach for a few days which is unusual as I don't like sand. I think I'm just on dead empty at the moment and need the ocean to recharge me.

Sailing, with the sun and fresh salty sea air for a week or two (or more as have not had a holiday in a few years) would do it for me. Peace and quiet, only the sound of the wind and waves, the odd dolphin jumping, bit of casual fishing and swimming, nice woman to share the enjoyment, Ahhhhhhh, feel better all ready. Unfortunately can't see it happening anytime soon though :-( (also a week or so in the country or bush would do it, bugger it, come to think of it any bloody holiday, sailing would still be my favourite though)

Getting in and washing off the crap. Doesn't matter if its big or small. I see dolphins, penguins and seals, not so many sharks. At one with the sea. Sometimes it feels sketchy when you risk your life at times, othertimes a beautiful moment. Easier being with nature than being with people. You know what you get with nature. When the time comes, happy to paddle out one way.

than escaping reality....either I go flying or camping..... Flying is something that most just don't understand.....but I feel like maverick when I do lol And camping...well...there's the campfire, usually good, beautiful, loving friends that show they care by not talking about whatever is wrong; but by just sitting with each other and just admiring everything about doing nothing....sometimes their touch in a cuddle; or smack on the arm from a crass joke is just what the doctor of self love prescribes.... my horse flat out. Nothing like being perched on 600kg of muscle power on 4 legs knowing you are only there because the animal under you lets you rule his life and trusts you. The adrenaline surge when you indicate with reins and legs that you want to go faster and he responds by gathering himself together and accelerating into a gallop that makes your eyes stream, takes your breath away and causes your heart to pound with enjoyment. This is on a par with good sex.

For a small recharge, just walking barefoot in the grass for a few minutes is great - feeling that connection with the earth is important. For a full recharge though, laying by a pool or the sea and reading a good book is one of my faves.

Enjoy your day today Freya! My go-to soul food is reading. I have a place that always used to make me happy, but now doesn't have the same effect sadly ... I miss it, even though I still go there. And I have a decisive song that is like a mindfulness mantra to me - helps me focus, and just eases the stress away.

Walking the dog on the beach, surfing and going for a dive. I'm pretty old school as well. Sometimes a couple of beers down the pub and a chat with the boys . ...sometimes it's getting out on the motorbikes that does it. In particular, ride an hour or two from home into the forest and find a quiet spot then just sit there for a bit and soak up nature. It's not easy to get away from the sounds of humanity...cars and trucks in the distance, planes overhead.Every few years I try to get back to Cairns, where I grew up, to visit family. I enjoy going to the old fishings spots where I used to fish as a child and throwing a line in. I did that a few weeks ago...this time I took my 10yr old nephew with me to show him what it's all about. I haven't seen him in years...he's a city boy, growing up in Beijing...I knew it would be a different experience for him.At the moment I'm finding peace by carving a pendant...a mermaid, in fact...out of a small piece of black coral, using a Dremel tool, scalpel, sandpaper. I made a simple pendant with it last year...this ones a bit more challenging. When it's polished and mounted on a chain, and if I'm happy with the result, then I'll give it away to someone I care about.Enough RHP for now, I better get back to it...

Locally I walk down to the beach and sit contemplating the world and the waves at the same time. Fresh winds laden with salt are so invigorating. Given the opportunity I'd love to go sailing. Last weekend I flew up to Broome for a few days. The red earth, turquoise waters and blue skies were just what I needed to recharge. Spent a lot of time in and out of galleries and sightseeing taking in the views and magic sunsets. Perfect 30 degrees days. Heaven! I haven't done it for a long time but going down to the SW of WA and staying in the forest in a log cabin with a fire blazing sipping on a glass of red. Mmmm... and sex on a deserted beach. oh yeah! The barefoot on the earth to draw energy is a common belief of a lot of native american tribes. I remember reading an Indian fable how white superior settlers made them wear clothes and shoes,Because Indians wouldnt look like "savages" if they looked like the white folk ( yep people have been screwed up all through history)Anyway, Indian people started to get sick. Ended up it was the shoes that blocked the direct contact with the earth. Thats wheres Indians connected and Got their energy .So they ditched the shoes and started to get well again. Makes sense when you think about it. Most ppl feel good when on the land or beach. And sunshine makes a big difference to how you feel too. Our cities may be amazing places but the concrete jungle blocks our connection with the earth. Thats why we have that inner pull to get to the country or beach to recharge.

Quoting 'unicorn99' totally agree, and galloping bareback down the beach is better than sex! - Posted from rhpmobile Pardon the intrusion with this lovely conversation, "better than sex ???" May I explain, Mum was a beach model, page three girl in the paper, a go go dancer and as well, her and her sister collected glass bottles to recycle and collect enough cash to buy a horse each, "hang'n off cliffs and stuff to get them" she tells very courageously, anyhow they never bothered saving for saddles, bareback down on Whale beach and ride the horses out into the surf and the horses body surfed back too the beach and would gallop with true spirit in their tales, Mum reckons I ruined her modeling career, but tells me I was the best thing that ever happened to her, the most pain and most easily it was forgotten too.

when the mind is troubled and overburdened it is the sound of crashing waves, the ocean in all it's raw power that I crave. Surf so loud it reverberates up through your feet and into your soul, so loud you cannot think. I will walk for miles, and then a some more, then turn back once the subconscious sends the signal that I am at peace. It is a very long walk home some days, but the peace in my heart, mind and soul makes it all worth it.

It's only a metre squared and it goes from the pergola to the rockery. Some of my profile pics have been taken there. The palms surrounding the pergola and the rockery give it a tropical feel. I have a cheap and nasty banana lounge from Bunnings and I set it up and sit there to read, think and plan. I might just sit there and take in the sun or simply listen to music. It's my space and I always retreat to this space for a recharge. Mary xx

Twenty odd years ago we moved out of the city to a far flung beach suburb, at the time we had no back fence and nobody between us and the sea. We'd just bought a new 5 stacker CD player which carked out very quickly, we were used to having music, radio or TV constantly playing to drown out the background noise of the city. We soon found that the sound of the surf on the reef was natures own music, the CD player's warranty had almost expired by the time we returned it...We now have a shopping mall, Macca's and many other of the symptoms of "progress" but when the hoons and others quiet down we can still here nature's symphony late at night.

As I just used up two years of annual leave on a 500 hour placement, my only 'downtime' is courtesy of a sick day! Fortunately, I am lucky to live close enough to walk to the beach, or I'll go for a saunter through the scrub and re-connect with nature that way. In the summer I go to the local nudist beach and there is nothing more soul repairing than lying naked in the hot sun and swimming naked in the ocean. Bit cold at this time of year though - hurry up summer!

My grand-daughter was born on a 29th, and passed away also on a 29th, and I usually go to see her and place flowers every month. She resides in a quiet rural area in western Sydney - a few horses nearby and usually some swallows and butterflies flitting around. Can quite happily stay and talk to her too for a period - can be somewhat 'refreshing' and bring perspective to life. She was only 5 when she passed, and always miss her terribly much. Tall
