Travelling to Townsville

May 27 2016

My Hubby and I are preparing to head up to Townsville this coming July for our Delayed Honeymoon & some well earned R & R. As we have never travelled up there before, I was hoping maybe, some RHPer's might be able to suggest some things to do and see. (V8's are on our list) We welcome your input. Thanks Ms werehere2please.

...were I heading to Townsville, I'd be asking the lovely Luck_dragon if she fancied catching up for a coffee. But if she said no thanks...I'd just keep driving to Cairns. It's like Townsville, but better. *** ABoyFromCairns***

Hey there after living in Townsville for 15yrs and working in cairns I think Townsville is better. You have magnetic island across from it palleranda has great views and a nude beach around the back of it. There is also billabong sanctuary the muesem and many clubs. If you like class then there are good bars there as well as shall we say enjoyable local clubs on Flinders. A great Sunday sesh at the long board a lot of people go there great music and atmosphere. If you want to know more send me a message . hope that helps. Lover of the ville - Posted from rhpmobile

Quoting 'Koolgrey'I'd just keep driving to Cairns. It's like Townsville, but better. *** ABoyFromCairns*** I concur Stirry's right...Magnetic Island is worth checking out and the main waterfront (The Strand) is nice and has some good cafes / restaurants (Palmer Street in South Townsville is the main dining out strip and I think there's a few new places in Flinders Street as well). Depending on how long you're up this way though I'd also recommend heading up to the Cairns region which really has much more to offer visitors / tourists. I love the Atherton Tablelands... lots of beautiful spots and different things to see and do, then further north there's Port Douglas and the Daintree. If you want to check out the reef that's also easier to do from Cairns. If you're interested in historical stuff you might want to have a look at Charters Towers which is a bit over an hour's drive west of here, and Ravenswood is an old gold mining town about 130km south west. There's also Wallaman Falls in the Wet Tropics near Ingham (small town about an hour's drive north), which is the highest permanent single-drop waterfall in Australia, quite spectacular.

There's also the Hervey's Range Heritage Tea Rooms which is very nice, about 30km from here.

Townsville is OK Magnetic Island is lovely but there is much mere to see and do in the Whitsundays / Arlie Beach. We have 74 Islands just a short distance and all insight of each other out from Airlie Beach. The boating and snorkling is magnificent. Plus you have the Islands to visit on day trips if you wish, Hamilton, Daydream, Hayman etc. Many many day trips and excursions to fill your day or Bare Boat Charter opportunities. We are the Wedding capital so I expect Honeymoon goes with that.

Quoting 'thebushman1979' a nude beach around the back of it. Also known as a popular gay hookup spot. Apparently Balding Bay Beach on Magnetic Island is also used as a nude beach. Just be aware that nude bathing is illegal in Qld (it being such a progressive state and all ) so any nude beaches up here are 'unofficial'.

Careful....you get a lot of pervs out there. I still consider myself a North Queenslander even though I have lived in Canberra for 18 years (God knows why 😏) There are so many beautiful places to see. It just depends on what interests you. I love Townsville but have to admit Cairns really does have more to do and see.

Also consider driving to Paluma - you turn off the highway heading north about 60Kms. Enjoy the cool waters of Little Crystal Creek & see the bridge that was built during the Great Depression & then head to Paluma. It is much cooler up there, there is an inn that has restricted opening hours & a tea room (The Ivy Cottage) that is open on weekends. Be careful of the road as it is narrow (but sealed) - some people drive as though they own it! There is a good lookout up there as well as good bush walks. You can also visit Paluma Dam which can be used by canoes, but the road conditions vary - if you have a low slung car, forget it.Hidden Valley is an expensive resort to stay at - is on from Paluma. It is eco-friendly as far as it's power generation goes. Also just north of the Paluma turnoff on the highway, there is the Frosty Mango where ice creams are made with exotic fruits. Balding Bay can be difficult to reach unless you have a boat or canoe. One couple from another similar site go there often - by canoe. You've missed out on the public tours to AIMS as they have ceased due to building re-arrangements. There are a number of older historical buildings in the CBD that are worth a look. If you head to Charters Towers, you can visit the gold mining town of Ravenswood (turn off at Mingela). The hamburgers at the Imperial Hotel are worth chomping on. The road also leads to the Burdekin Dam - the largest dam in Qld. Swimming is not recommended as there are crocs in it!

If you are coffee drinkers you might struggle... it can be difficult to find decent coffee here. Try the C Bar on The Strand, and if you do head up north the Tablelands is pretty famous for its locally grown coffee.

Quoting 'thebushman1979' As for the nude beach in Townsville I haven't heard anything bad from people who go there. Nothing like a bit of nude bathing lol - Posted from rhpmobile it depends what you're after and a quick google will tell you what Shelley is most commonly used for. I'd say the people who go there know that and hence the lack of complaints

Ooh I stand corrected!! Um yes I didn't know that as the people I knew were a couple. Makes sense now.. Wish I'd known earlier when I was living there I'd have gone further around to check it out and not just fished in the first bay !! Haha . I know where I'll be visiting when I come up next time. A couple of other things to do -Drive up Castle Hill (be careful of the walkers) - day time & at night. Don't play up as there are cameras. Also do the same for Mt Stuart - on a clear day you can see Hinchingbrook Island (Australia's largest island national park), at night you see the lights (perhaps more - wink, wink). If you go further north, there is Paronella Park, Mission Beach (be careful of hitting cassowaries - they are endangered) & up on the Atherton Tablelands there are lots of tourist drives, attractions. Enjoy your time - could you bring some water with you? Our dams received very little this year. May be on Level 3 restrictions soon!
