Trust-fund kiddies

March 31 2013

Without the backing of rich individuals and institutions, our culture wouldn't be what it is today. The great Roman and other imperial works and wonders were the result of vision and resources provided by powerful Cesars and government commissions. We have much of our Renaissance art, science and other learning thanks to the substantial patronage of the church, some rich city-states, and individuals. Even into the mid-20th century, artists could still find patrons to help them have time to produce important, if not immediately commercially successful, works. Now we have Paris Hilton as the quintessential beneficiary of an accumulated fortune. My question:- what would you do with your life if a wealthy benefactor made money no object? And if no-one was looking over your shoulder (it was inherited, say), would you still be so noble? Just a hypothetical... - Posted from rhpmobile

Well MessIts easy really, I would buy out Hugh Hefner and continue to live the dream he has lived, but my dream would be better I would invite a select few female RHP forum contributors to visit at their leisure to enjoy all that the 'L00king Mansion' had to offer, obviously my private limo and jet would be part of the deal The mansion would be expanded to cater for a training school to teach the younger guys 'the art of making love', registrations of interest would be sought from the same RHP female members, obviously I would attend classes as well ;)Seriously it would allow me to become a philanthropist

Alternate between a nice property on the south coast of NSW building a gt40 replica and weekending at a penthouse overlooking circular quay with a bit of amateur car racing thrown in. That and travelling the globe every so often. Quick someone gimme money!

in resources to build, run, support and oversee facilities to assist:Survivors of abuse and people living with mental health issues, plus the associated links tounemployment and homelessness. I would magically run all the facilities from the ground up and ensure the Government doesn't fuck it up with political BS. It would be real people helping real people, survivors helping survivors.I love that my simple mind thinks it's possible to throw a huge blanket over these issues and fix them...ugh if only eh.

I am a simple kinda guy with simple needs. I like to make people happy, so if money was nothing, I would fund a 'get connected' scheme. Bringing technology into homes of the less fortunate for free, as I believe that kids, irrespective of the background, deserve the right to access the Internet for study, without cost. I would consult, build, and install a computer in the homes of those whose parents aren't as financial as others. Of course I'd also build myself a house and buy a plane of course :)- Posted from rhpmobile

I don't think I would enjoy a large amount of money being handed or left to me...it would not be the same as working hard and earning it. .Don't think I wouldn't cope and that's the truth!! I am really happy where I am now in my life and NO amount of money could change that, cause I have worked hard to get where I am..Actually just recently my mum was left an amount of inheritance money and she wanted to share some of it with me as she knew my life long dream is travelling overseas..it really overwhelmed me that she would even want to share some of the money with me let alone even think of me...I actually cried, felt guilty and couldn't accept it.So OP to answer your question, I just couldn't do it- don't think it would be right either to role-model to my daughter that money can buy anything...sorry :(Foxy

I'd relay the railway back up though the swan view tunnel as far as Childows/lake Leschinaultia (or how ever you spell it). Then I'd restore the old R class loco that use to be in front of the Midland shopping center for week end family picnic rides up the ranges the old way..

I would buy all the fast food chains,Maccas,KFC,etc re-do their menus to healthy choices and make it affordable. I would fund a breakfast program in every Australian school.Hunger is a huge barrier to learning, many kids go to school without having had breakfast. I would set up a Philanthropic trust to fund progams world wide particularly in education.I believe that edication is the key to eradicating poverty. But of course I would also do some things for me.I would renovate my house ..I actually love where I live...I would buy a tropical island and like TR fly to my favourite destinations first class.

... if I don't have the money to buy it , then I don't. Only once was I dept and that was on my home, which i paid off in 7 years. Now ' I own everything i have and I try to holiday overseas twice a year, unless my business won't allow me. I never came from money so it was never a big deal to me' but I was lucky enough to have a career in football ( nrl ) which left me in fairly good shape and i run my own business ' but I am by no means a rich man by anyone's standards. I don't yearn to have a lot of money, and I pity those who do. I know people who thrive on making the almighty dollar, but i also see the more they gather , the more arrogant they become the more it makes them not very nice people to be around. All the good things in life are right there in front of us if we care to look. Money makes life a little easier for some. But most ppl are happy with what they already have.. Remember ' at the end of the day the rich are buried just as deep as the rest of us .. and are just as dead..

How much money are we talking about, a million is nothing these days but would do me just fine. Buy a house, toys and have fun. But give me a billion and my goal will change completely. The Nobel prizes are funded by the Nobel Fund created by the inventor of dynamite and the blasting cap. Alfred Noble requested the fund be set up upon his death because the company that his father created and allowed him to become so wealthy was as producer of land and sea mines. Alfred did not want to go down in history, remembered as a destroyer of lives. Nobel Fund value $500 million. We may not be able to take wealth to our graves but we can control it after death. So give me a billion and I would start buying up the most profitable companies around the world, I would use the dividends to reinvest with an aim to have as much as I can by my death. I would aim to be the worlds richest ever individual at my death. Then I would set up the world demilitarization fund. It's aim. To end war, to promote independent diplomatic endeavour for conflict resolution and provide aid to only nations actively reducing military spending.Oh i am such a selfish shit, all I want to buy is world peace and be remembered for 6000 years....

It is amazing how different ideas bubble up... and how many ills there are to fix... But what if the fund only allowed you to live comfortably, but with idle time... call it, independently comfortable... it isn't enough to invest in a charity, it won't cure a disease, or buy up all the Monsanto stock to force them to give away malaria drugs. How would you spend your time? Reading? Praying? Writing? Wandering? Fucking? Building mud huts in the 3rd world? Or just what you do today?- Posted from rhpmobile

I am not independently wealthy nor rich by any definition of the word. However, I have always managed my money conservatively. With money, you can do a lot of things. I financially support my parents somewhat and have helped other relatives through university. So, if I was going to get a lot of money, I think I would be doing the same but perhaps helping more people, more often. Spending it all does not help though. Investing the money so that the funds don't run out is a better way for doing things in the long term. Freya, there is no excuse for kids not having breakfast. I had a student collapse in exams due to hunger. I have also met a few people who skip breakfast but that is due to their poor time management rather than not being able to afford the food. I agree with you about education. If you ever start that trust, I'll contribute to it. Just make sure the administrative fees are low. I would rather see the money go to teachers, school buildings and books rather than on your first class flight tickets or luxury car. Ok, I guess you know my feeling towards charitable organisations.

I'd do exactly what I'm doing now. Except maybe stay in 5 stars when in Sydney and drink more French bubbles. Although the $5 sav blanc from Aldi isn't bad.

I heard about this man who bought a big block of land and designed a special kind of homes/ units/ garden and recreation area. He wanted to mix and match the people renting this homes. Make all of them responsible for this little community. He thought to lease this homes/ units to a verity of people. Each home was designed to cater for the neats of the individual person. He wanted to have a mixed age and living style of people. Like old retired couple and retired single , they need access for a wheelchair to get in and out of the home or in the bathroom, Young family with children, and single father or mothers, play ground Professional couples with out children. The courtyard would be like a meeting place for all. His dream was to bring the ages together. I think this would create a fine environment around these homes. Older people could mix with young children and young children with old once. I thought what a great idea. I would spend my money to create around 10 homes. The occupants would have a say should someone wants to move in and share this little town. Then I would invite all my family for a big reunion to Australia. Buy my sons each a house, pay my mortgage, and go on my dream holiday. And then I don’t know, keep my money in the bank live of the interest and don’t work anymore.
