A Slut is woman with the morals of a man :) I have heard men referred to as sluts. To me there is a difference to some one who has many casual relationships and some one who will sleep with any one. Back to your question Guys call guys Studs for sleeping with a lot of women, it is something they aspire to so they give it a nice name. When guys call a woman a slut it is normally because the woman is not sleeping with them ! LC

But I'm confused. I never thought it was country specific. I thought it was viewed this way via gender specifics So what countries view this differently from say Australia ?

I am a man and I dress and act like a slut. But I dont see the term slut as derogatory. It's an interpretation by the person/s and I don't get offended when I am referred to as one. But I do not refer to anyone else by that name because I know it can be sensitive because of upbringings and that old chestnut............society

Like a lot of social attitudes, it's a leftover legacy of feudal and Christian Medieval society. Chastity was an important concept in the middle ages (for both men and women). Coupled with the reality that women were always faced greater health and social risk than men from promiscuous behaviour and you have the Madonna/Whore complex.

It's still out there alive and well. The term slut doesn't need to be used: I was recently referred to as 'easy' by a man (who was very busy playing the field and using every lie in the book to keep it all running smoothly). I know the term was used in a very derogarory sense. He made that very clear. His suggestion was that I did not deserve to have a man like me for me because I 'gave in to my sexual desire 'too quickly'. I would be interested to know how many guys out there are blinded to a woman's other qualities if he gets to have her on the second date? I personally did not see him as being any lesser a person because he wanted to whip his cock out... In fact on the first date. - Posted from rhpmobile

We are supposed to get married then have sex ,be monogamous and have vanilla sex. We all know how that works out, well for most anyway. It comes from men who are brought up the same way. Have sex as much as you want with anyone you want. But marry the good girl from right side of town. That generation is slowly disappearing I hope.

Its not so much of a double standard....when its mostly guys using the terms stud and slut. They use the term stud (do they? I don't hear it) as a brag.....but often the use of the word slut is a barbed insult towards a woman who the guy thought was fair game for his advances....but who declined him. It does little for the ego for a slut to have higher standards.

I don't use the term myself as I find it a bit derogatory and used in an angry way when I hear it come from somebody. Always thought it referred to a prostitute of old. Through my life I would have met more men than women that I would use the term slut for probably because their attitude defined them as that. The term that I liked for a woman that slept about with no abandon was bike not that I use that either. People just need to accept that we are all different in terms of sexual appetite without any names associated with it.

Unfortunately the practice of naming and shaming continues.social media has a lot to answer for in this regard. Many young women are highly sexualised in their early teens, often due to sexual abuse and sex becomes a currency to seek validation of self worth,of course it usually has the opposite effect ...................... Sexually adventurous women throughout history have been vilified, accused of crimes they did not commit, for example Mata Hari who the French executed in WW1...Mary Magdalen was declared a prostitute by Pope Gregory in the 8th century because she was becoming more popular than Peter,it wasn't until Vatican 2 in 1969 that the Church said oops sorry Mary we got it wrong.......The sex lives of women have taken precedence over their abilities ,Cleopatra was an astute politician but it is her liaisons with Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony that we remember her for...Theodora was also a clever woman but when she is spoken of its not for her abilities as Constantines Queen ,it's because she was formerly a prostitute......Even Elizabeth 1 was affected by this, she was famous for being The Virgin Queen,if he married she knew that she would lose her power,so her sex life or supposed lack of it fascinates us still ...Women continue to be executed for adultery in some cultures....and in our culture if you are a much older woman and have much younger lovers you re branded as a predatory woman,a cougar...so women have secret sex lives,to have a sex life can still be a dangerous thing, xxFreya

It's because equal rights are unfortunately still a long way off. A man is a player, a woman a slut.A man is confident, a woman full of herself. A man is direct, a woman feisty.A man is critical, a woman a nag/bitchy.A man is bold, a woman sassy.A man is authoritarian, a woman bossy.A man is frustrated, a woman hysterical.A man is distracted, a woman an air-head/ditzy, erratic.A man is in a bad mood, a woman must be getting her period. Just a few examples I still come across all the time. When is the last time any of you heard the words I used for women to describe a man?

It does come back to parents, to mould new minds to be more open and free thinking, and of course with their actions, I remember mum and dad never hugging or kissing in front of us.... It just wasn't done, it was private, kept for the bedroom.....wrong... Hugging, kissing, hand holding, back rubs, affection must be shown in front of your children, it helps them to learn expression.... I'm a firm believer in being open with my family, it's very healthy, also encourages them to be more open with me...letting me in to help them if and when they need it.....

Most parents hide their sexual side......how can the young one change when we are still stuck in the old ways? I have 2 boys and a girl aged 9 to 12 and conversation about sexuality has always been an open and ongoing one in our home. I have tried hard to teach them that sex is awesome, that it's something wonderful their bodies can do that feels great. I have explained to all of them about the importance of respecting their and other's bodies and there has been an ongoing conversation about consent. All my kids know that if someone tells them to stop touching them they must immediately desist. That goes for sibling spats too. The other day my son came home and told me about a boy in his class who was calling one of the girls a slut because she is a dancer and had had some professional photos taken in dance gear (tights, croptop, etc). I tried hard to control my psychotic rage (this kid is an arsehole with bogan, redneck parents who's been calling everything he doesn't like 'gay' since he was 5) and explain to my son about the unfairness of this being directed at a girl for doing nothing more than showing her body doing such amazing dancing poses. I explained how society likes to keep women in their place by controlling how they choose to express themselves. I think he got it, but I also wonder how much difference my message can make when the one coming from the rest of society is so different. It's an issue I really struggle with and already I see my daughter being affected by it. She obsesses about how she looks and is constantly taking selfies. Her twin brother cares so little about his appearance, it's a struggle to get him to wear matching socks when he leaves the house! That doesn't come from me and I honestly wonder if my message is enough to cut through the noise they're exposed to everyday. All I can do it try....

As is always the case for any word that someone is called slut, whore etc it depends of the way and intent it is used and it coming from a place of respect. Some people love being called a slut, in bedroom (me included) and I think it's an awesome way to reclaim ownership of the word in positive sense. It's when it's used in an i respectful way and without consent that it takes it to the low that society in general associates with the word and shows the true side of the person using it in that way. For me you can't shame someone with the word slut if they have already reclaimed it back for themselves in the positive sense. Cheers, W. - Posted from rhpmobile

I don't really see it as an equal rights issue though I can see what you are pointing out Meander. I, like Litonya believe it to be an educational issue both at home (especially) and at school. I have rarely slung derogatory words about as I was raised not to be that way and besides most people have no idea of anyone's past to know why they may behave or act in certain ways. I could also make a list of comparisons to what women are called and the equivalent of the male form depending on which genders perspective and their respectfulness comes from and respect is the word that defines whether or not we CHOOSE to use different gender specific words for the same instances. I shall end with an answer to your question Meander. The one thing I have been called is erratic (and fair enough in the context it was used) but I have heard men called a slut, bossy and very often full of themselves.

human beings like to reward effort, and it takes a lot of work for a man to get laid... But a woman just has to say "yeah, why not?" ps. on a more serious note, as far as I'm concerned people can fuck around as much as they like as long as they're discerning and respectful (of themselves and their partners). But if they're in the thrall of some sort of compulsion then I tend to find that ugly, in the same way I find any addiction ugly.

"slut (n.) c. 1400, "a dirty, slovenly, or untidy woman," according to OED "Of doubtful origin," but probably cognate with dialectal German Schlutt "slovenly woman," dialectal Swedish slata "idle woman, slut," and Dutch slodde "slut," slodder "a careless man," but the exact relationship of all these is obscure. Chaucer uses sluttish (late 14c.) in reference to the appearance of an untidy man. Also "a kitchen maid, a drudge" (mid-15c.; hard pieces in a bread loaf from imperfect kneading were called slut's pennies, 18c.). Specific modern sense of "woman who enjoys sex in a degree considered shamefully excessive" is by 1966. Meaning "woman of loose character, bold hussy" is attested from mid-15c., but the primary association through 18c. was untidiness.

Meander shows the word has an interesting/unclear history. There are many women who have started to reclaim the word (e.g. slutwalk, the ethical slut) and I personally also have a positive association with the term. When I hear/say slut I think "a woman (or man) who is proud to be sexually open minded and experienced." I believe quite a few people on this site would share a similar opinion and hope this view eventually spreads to the wider public. Men in particular should be encouraged to use the term positively. We hope/want women to be sexually promiscuous, then use derogatory terms when they are. It doesn't make sense and is counter productive to the interests of both sexes! :s

I think the term slut , describes a person willing to share their body with whom they desire, whether its 2 or 3 or 12 or more people, in a day or in a week or whatever. its someone that has an urge and needs fullfill it. somedays one partner is enough, other days its like , lets party kind of thing. nothing derogatory with the term , just a choice people make . Maybe slut is for women that stud is for guys, the same thing really - just a gender term How many partners can you do ? ( weetbix ad)

I'd say that women are supposed to care about who they sleep with. They want seduction. Not all men are into seduction, they just want to fuck. If they find a woman who is keen to just fuck - she is a slut. He doesn't need to wine and dine her... No mind games - just fuck. IMO that's a slut. So if you are a stud - the more sluts the better. No better or worse than a slut. Just after the same thing. - Posted from rhpmobile

Slurs such as Slut or Tart or bitch are feminine and therefore used against women. Guys get called wankers, arseholes and dickheads. None mean anything unless they have a personal intent, if someone chooses to have more partners that doesn't make them a slut. Its when they have no regard for who fucks them. - Posted from rhpmobile

My point is, that men get called 'dirty old .. ' which is true of both genders if you want equity, but is always derogatory to men, even when its as simple as an older man giving a compliment to a younger woman. Whereas a cougar has a 'good on you for being liberated' connotation. I really dont see that there is any liberation for anyone by useing negative names on a site like RHP. been called a slut before - and not always because i was spread legged either! at times it was because I'm confident and self assured, hold my head up high, know what i want, flirt a little and am able to dish it out just like a man would i suppose... and yep happy to be a slut
