Unknown classic songs

May 24 2016

There have been a few posts lately of songs, and I for one, welcome the exposure to good music that I haven't come across yet. What I would like to see listed here are songs that you doubt anybodies heard, but you find them to be hidden pearls in the obscurity of time. This is not a list for your favourite Top 40 song. This is a resurrection of songs that never should have made it, but didn't. Songs (and artists) that are worth sharing. What I propose is a searchable list with Genre in the subject line, followed by Artist/Band and Title. A write up would be a good follow up to tell the reader something about why you consider it extra special. I want a new playlist. 😀

Artist: Sinead Lohan Title: Everything around me is changing This song appeared on a movie but is not released otherwise. My ex was great for pulling songs from movies and I stumbled across this while sorting through media after me split. It nailed me straight away. I played it later to a friend and said that I didn't really understand the cryptic verse...she replied "It's you". Lyrics: This high and mighty morning wont help you anymore. You cant scrape me from the floor. Everything around me is changing. And Im tempted by the witches who go waltzing in the forest. They come calling to me nightly. Everything around me is changing. Chorus And isnt this always what I wanted? Isnt it just what I always wanted? This is only what I want. Everything around me to be changing. And you can send your letter to the same address. I tend to but I wont digress. Your head high cos you do your best. The days are better but the night's still strong. It falls down and I do belong somewhere underneath this song. Now Im tasting your ill flavour Gather near while I am stranger. Turn your back while I am brave. Everything around me is changing. And didnt I say it in my own letter. I will always make you better. Bring yourself over to me. Everything except me is changing. Chorus Repeat first verse. Great song...haunting.

With the first song on Tara's birthday playlist, 69 classics in all.. Charlie Sexton, 1985 he was 17 years old when he recorded 'Beat So Lonely', you can see it in the film clip, recording in the studio, he knew something that many spend their whole life for less as to what Charlie had in his bag, dynamics. Worth a look in those respects. The only classic song I've ever thought was done better than the original*...(not counting Rod Stewart and Amy Belle, Live 2004 At Royal Albert Hall, 'I Don't Want To Talk About It'. Rod was found busking and introduced to the music industry and has done very well, To the whole world as an entertainer, a friend of his found 'Amy Belle' busking.... Again worth a look at the live performance, see how proud he is of this absolutely beautiful, her nervous shyness and trust, respect, love with the man, the song, the moment her life changed, all of it, I'd say "Amy Belle right then for that one performance" in duet with the cool swagger showing off his life of good fortune, from Busker, paid forward and Amy this shy nervous, so innocent, all of it in her emotions, "The sexiest woman ever performed" and fuck she did, she fucked me! when singing their song, she and Rod knew it,.. Made it the best it has ever and will always be, our song ) Big call ? *The best version, I reckon, the song was written to be sung and performed the way it is, the whole 18 minutes, by Santa Esmerelda If you want to hear it sung as the story is felt,... "Oh mother, tell your children, Not to do what I have done Spend your lives in sin and misery In the 'House of the Rising Sun'," ! No question about it, IMHO. Another song, a little heartfelt, sentimental and I miss both Billy Thorpe and Clarke'y, RIPs (mother fucker of a sound man) I was privileged as a friend to be in the recording studio as the drum track was down tight, Clarke'y had new valve pre amps off the mic's, sweet sounds, we listened to Thorpe'y working on his last acoustic recording, singing (and "it did sound like sex", he agreed and said "it's meant to sound like sex Matty",) 'Tangier' Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs, ..Women threw their underwear at Piggy though, he'd hang some on his organ, out of respect's given as gifts, not taken and forsaken, I guess. Mado Mado Tara xx

Such a talent and such a sad short life :-( Watching SBS late one night I came across this beautiful haunting piece of music - a mesh of piano and cello. If you love classical music this could touch you as it did me "Undon Hulu - and they have escaped the weight of darkness" by Olafur Arnolds My all time favourite song is "Love Will Tear Us Apart" by Joy Division and I have many covers of it but one of the best is by Melody Mountain A song called "Into the Unknown" by the Blackchords, I love this song but I cant remember where I first heard it, so I cant share anything but the song and artist I love the haunting title song from the TV show on SBS "The Bridge" "Hollow Talk " by the Choir of Young Believers IMHO Anything by: Antony and the JohnsonsCalexicoNick DrakeRyan AdamsJason IsbellThe Mortal CoilThe DecemberistsSufjan Stephens Could one day be considered classics :-)

“16 Shells From a Thirty-Ought Six” (Swordfishtrombones, 1983) A shuffling, slouching tale of a long strange trip through some unnamed wilderness with a crow trapped in a guitar and a mule as traveling buddies, “16 Shells” was borne of Waits’ obsession with old prison work-gang chants. If you aren’t terrified by Waits howling “I’m gonna whittle you into kindlin’”, then you’re made of sterner stuff than I am. “Christmas Card From a Hooker in Minneapolis” (Blue Valentine, 1978 There are more creative Tom Waits songs, and ones that he actually, well, wrote (“Christmas Card” is adapted from a Charles Bukowski poem called “Charlie I’m Pregnant”), but there aren’t quite as many that can utterly devastate a room full of people with quite the same slurred, finely-detailed aplomb. For maximum tears in your bourbon, watch this live version, which features a bedraggled interpolation of “Silent Night” and Waits’ rendition of that Little Anthony and the Imperials record. The audience laughs a bit at some of the lyrical gems, but after that final verse, you can hear a pin drop.

Artist: Maggie Bell Title: Hold on Back in the days when Rod Stewart was busking, one singer he used to hang with was Maggie Bell. A mate got her album "Suicide Sal" from a record club subscription. Man, it's hard to believe that she is not black...so much soul. My sister has made it very clear that she wants "Hold on" to be played at her funeral. It's a great LP. And they both used to knock around with "Long John Balbry" who does the best version of "We've lost that loving feeling" IMHO

Written by the brothers Gibb in the early 80's and given to Dionne to help revive her career, this one's a tear jerker. I love it...it's got The Bee Gee's written all over it. Tragic lyrics... I got to say it and it's hard for me You got me crying like I thought I would never be Love is believing, but you let me down How can I love you when you ain't around And I get to the morning and you never call Love should be everything or not at all And it don't matter whatever you do I made a life out of loving you Only to find any dream that I follow is dying I'm crying in the rain I could be searching my world for a love everlasting Feeling no pain When will we meet again Why do you have to be a heartbreaker Is it a lesson that I never knew Got to get out of the spell that I'm under My love for you Why do you have to be a heartbreaker When I was being what you want me to be Suddenly, everything I ever wanted Has passed me by This world may end Not you and I My love is stronger than the universe My soul is crying for you and that cannot be reversed You made the rules and you could not see You made a life out of hurting me Out of my mind, I am held by the power of you, love Tell me when do we try Or should we say goodbye Why do you have to be a heartbreaker When I was being what you want me to be Suddenly, everything I ever wanted Has passed me by Oh, why do you have to be a heartbreaker Is it a lesson that I never knew Suddenly, everything I ever wanted My love for you Oh, why do you have to be a heartbreaker When I was being what you want me to be Suddenly everything I ever wanted Has passed me by Tell me, why do you have to be a heartbreaker

One for the Nick Drake and Sufjan fans: Grand Salvo is the project of a guy from Melbourne called Paddy Mann. His songs have an amazing emotional power (over me at least) that means I need to stifle sobs most times I see him - and people describe me as pathologically emotionless. Key songs to listen to are 'Needles' 'Brother' 'I Am a Bird' and 'The Boy's Story of His Faithful Family Dog'. It will be some of the most incredible stuff you'll listen to. 'Blue' by the Jayhawks has a wonderful plaintive chorus that I still love. 'The Ghetto' by Donny Hathaway is a classic, post 'There's a Riot Goin' On' soul song you can dance to. 'Ever Fallen In Love' by the Buzzcocks is completely perfect and I can never get sick of it. 'Dress Sexy at My Funeral' by Smog is the song I want played at my funeral. Bill Callahan (aka Smog) has lots of amazing stuff you should check out. I saw a great documentary of the early 70's country scene called Heartworn Highways on youtube recently. The highlight was Townes Van Zandt singing 'Hangin Round to Die' with his 80 year old neighbour crying. You'd have to have a heart of stone not to. One for the Aztecs/Purple Hearts/Coloured Balls fans: Check out a band called Endless Boogie from Brooklyn. Comprised of a 64 professional record collector and a couple of NY indie scenesters they are the most aptly named band I can think of - riffing of the sort Billy Thorpe would get into, stretched out into this incredibly distillled transcendental long jam. Q - I was lucky enough to see a reformed version of the Loved Ones when I was 19. Gerry Humphries was having so much fun..

Artist: Coven. Title: One Tin Soldier. This was the theme song for the (old) movie Billy Jack. Aclassic movie and it just takes the song to a whole new level.
