Wet Your Whistle (Part Deux)

February 26 2017

Quite a while ago, I started a thread in The Chillout Lounge - Wet Your Whistle, asking for recommendations for sweet and mildly alcoholic cocktails for nights when I head to the pub. See, I used to be a teetotaller (non-drinker) or a very very modest social drinker (not more than two glasses of alcohol... in an entire year!) but I'm slowly exploring the fascinating world of cocktails... within limits, of course, because I do not want to challenge my liver and I do not want to overdo the experimental jaunt and end up with health issues or nasty side effects. My aim - enjoy a drink without getting drunk. Summer pointed out to me that The Chillout Lounge is not accessible to everyone. I had inadvertently limited my opportunities for learning more about cocktails and liqueur by posting in the wrong section. I received good recommendations from many back then, and because my interest in this has increased at a steady pace, I've decided to cast my net wider this time, and ask : - What are your favourite drinks / cocktails / liqueur / beer when you are out for a night at the pub? - What would you recommend if the criteria was a drink that was not too high in alcohol content and was easy for a newbie drinker to take to? - Have you concocted your own cocktails before and if so, what have you created? I started by loving Choya, a Japanese Plum Wine that's often drunk for digestive benefits, created my own cocktails based on that, and then proceeded to try out other liquour. I've since tried Choya Kokuto Umeshu (Japanese Plum Wine with Brown Sugar and Rum), Green Tea Choya (Choya Uji Green Tea), Korean Plum Wine with gold specks, Chambord with Lemonade (thank you, SOTL and Summer, for recommending that! LOVE it!), French Creme de Cassis (Blackcurrent Liqueur), Aperol Spritz, Prosecco, and this arvo, I bought a St Germain Elderflower Liqueur to try. I've got my eyes on a Solerno Blood Orange Liqueur, the Maraska Cherry Liqueur and Pavan next. Play bartender for a while and help broaden my foray into this amazing world of Bacchus! Let's talk COCK...tails.

Sweet drinks or more to the dry end of the scale? I'm partial to the sourer type of cocktails. I like tequila and fresh apple juice and a splash of soda if you want to lighten it up a bit. If you like coffee can't go past an Espresso Martini. Sangria if you make your own is a yummy summer drink and you can make it to suit your alcohol level. All types of Mojito rock in summer, so refreshing. Ditto margarita's. I like the original lime ones. But just saw a pomegranate one that looks yum. Vodka (apple or normal) fresh lime and soda is refreshing and light in calories as well. Also nice with a splash of cranberry added.Good topic I'm sure you'll get some great combo's, have fun with the taste testing. Now you have got me in the mood for a cocktail party :)

Wow... great suggestions! Thanks! I was eyeing a Pomegranate liqueur and a Passionfruit Liqueur from Brazil yesterday at Dan Murphy's. I wish all liqueur came in smaller bottles so one could purchase and do a taste test before committing to a large bottle. :P Sangria... mmmMMMmmm! What do you put in yours?

Forgot to answer your question - I prefer the more sweet-ish cocktails and concoctions. Tequila would be out of my range. I would generally avoid anything above 25% alcohol. I might try a little sip, but my joke is, the higher the alcohol content, the higher my chances of spontaneous combustion! LOL!!!

gin and tonic, but they're way too easy to drink. Dark 'n' Stormy, Old Fashioned and good ol' Martinis always make a good night of it. Mojitos are perfect for a long, languorous warm twilight, music on the breeze... Beer and a pool table is always a good cocktail...

I haven't made much at home but love ones based on apple cider which isn't traditional but very refreshing. I had one with lychees and some type of lychee liquor in it which was nice. I don't really like the traditional Spanish one that can be quite heavy and sweet. Maybe try some of the more modern recipes on pintrest which have a twist and are lighter and fresher. The experimenting will be half the fun :)

A Frose sounds really tantalising! "She glided gracefully into the room with a crystal cocktail glass of Frose elegantly nestled in her hand, and when she saw the statuesque man standing quietly in the corner, silently observing her, she froze..." A Frose sounds like it should be served in that special Swarovski wine glass with crystals inside the stem of the glass! Anyone remember those glasses?

Yes! I have Reidel stemless glasses with a pink tint on the bottom, very pretty, they were a gift. Think they were made especially for the Breast Cancer Charity a few years ago. But I loved those crystal ones. Saw some in the Swarovski shop....... Waaaay out of my price range though, but beautiful! Reminds me of a special cocktail, me, my glass of wine and a gentleman, didnt cost anything either

... I've been mixing and enjoying my own mildly alcoholic cocktails recently and yesterday, a close friend commented, "Have you been drinking or having lots of good sex lately? I haven't seen you THIS happy in a long while!" So I googled "Does liqueur make you happy?"... and voila! ... scientists have done PET scans on people before and after giving them alcohol and the results are : alcohol does trigger the release of endorphins in the pleasure zone of the brain! Bona fide science! However, it's wise not to drink excessively because the higher the amount of alcohol consumed, the greater the risks of getting a substance abuse dependance and addiction, and the higher the risks of getting depression. So interesting! :)

Love pretty wineglasses! =D I often drink water or juice or chilled tea out of wineglasses and I've had quite a few Aussie friends protest like it's sacrilegious. :P And those Swarovski wineglasses... must... resist! :P

Im a social drinker and hardly drink when I'm in training as my boxing and gym workouts are demanding and leaves me dehydrated. I find physical training more rewarding physically, mentally so I limit my drinks to what I really love. Now, definitely Gin and Tonic. Preferably Bombay Sapphire. Can't resist monitor and been trialling different recipes/concoctions. Am on a quest to find the best mojitos in Melbourne and have earmarked 3-4 places. So far. I still have to discover the offerings of tequila. Will look up recipes but any recommendations will be most appreciated. Good beer is a must on a searing hot day or weather like where I am right now. I discovered the local apple flavoured and lemon flavoured beer. nice after work just before a swim in the pool. I wonder if I can get them in Australia. Aside from that, prefer moderation on exploring my choice of poison, not a quest for a poisoned challis. 😉

... is St Germain. It's an elderflower liqueur and the bouquet is soooooo pleasant that it's euphoric aromatherapy! My cocktail is made with St Germain elderflowr liqueur, Prosecco and Soda Water. It truly has a bouquet to rival Choya, the famous Japanese Plum Wine.
